Here it is, the always-eagerly-awaited year end "Rewind" issue of The Wire, looking back at the past year, in this case 2012. Besides the massive 2012 Rewind section, pages 30-59, it's got all the usual regular features: reviews & columns & charts, etc.
The "Invisible Jukebox" test this time is undertaken by Roxy Music's Bryan Ferry. The "Global Ear" scene report covers Christchurch, NZ in the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake. Charles Hayward of This Heat handles the "Epiphanies" essay on the back page. And there's more.
Meanwhile, in that 2012 Rewind section, you'll find The Wire's writers' picks for the Releases Of The Year (#1 going to Laurel Halo's Quarantine). Various trends also get spotted and analyzed and argued about ("the decline of the group", "the rise of the private press") by The Wire's scribes. These writers (and also a bunch of the artists) further share their personal reflections on the year that was. As usual, very very interesting/informative as a recap of the state of "new" music in 2012 and a potential argument starter all right.
One of the best print mags around, that is if you're like us and want to keep up with all the weird music in the world! This issue has synth maven Daniel Lopatin aka Oneohtrix Point Never on the cover. The new issue of The Wire features noisniks Wolf Eyes on the cover, on the occasion of their great new disc No Answer: Lower Floors. There were some guys from out of town in the store the other day who are buddies with Wolf Eyes and they were highly amused to say the least by the photos and interview, especially as pertaining to the Wolf Eyes member identified here as Crazy Jim, whose pull quote goes like this: "I have a reputation of being a nut. That's not so bad. I can't worry about what other people think. I barely know what I think."
Anyway, also in this issue, lots more good stuff, including a Slovenian scene report, an article about Woodstock's Creative Music Studio, and an Invisible Jukebox session with Oval. Plus Glenn Jones on John Fahey, and the usual ton o' reviews, etc.
"Babble On! In 20 page special, Wire contributors assess and rethink the relationship between underground music and words, text and language." That's the cover feature this month, and manages to touch upon everything from Fluxus to Footwork, Cage to Corrupted (Corrupted, really?).

Heck yeah, NZ's The Dead C is on the cover! "On the road in Europe, they tell David Keenan why Bruce Russell's amp sound is better than sex." Can't wait to read that. Gotta hand it to The Wire, it's pretty impossible to predict who their next cover star is gonna be. Definitely it's not based on record sales. This ish, we're being introduced to saxophonist/vocalist/composer Mantana Roberts. Some more familiar folks are also featured, however, including aQ faves Cave and The Necks. Another month, another Wire to read! This one's got jazz saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell on the cover, and it also features Harry Bertoia, footwork's RP Boo (doing the Invisible Jukebox), Legowelt, Tyondai Braxton, and plenty more, including the usual plethora of reviews.
New issue of The Wire featuring a special section, "Deep Cover", all about artists indulging in aliases, pseudonyms and alter egos, discussing the phenomenon in techno, black metal, dub, and more. Nice cover design reflecting that theme.
Also this issue, everything from South African jazz to Lead Belly to a Hanoi scene report... plus, all the usual reviews and charts and what not... oh, and Eugene Chadbourne is put to the Invisible Jukebox test.
Another issue of this must read magazine for new/weird/interesting music fanatics. The cover star this time 'round is British electronic producer Mark Fell, we dig him but the real reason to pick up this particular issue has got to the the "Primer" section, for its subject this ish: Japanese psych improv lord Keiji Haino! Even those of us, like Allan, with an almost complete (& thus vast) Haino collection, will find this interesting, and for those who don't yet have a lot of Haino, it's sure could be helpful. Also this issue: Norwegian jazz vocalist Karin Krog, Canadian sound artist Crys Cole, a scene report from Shenzhen, China, and plenty more, including all the usual reviews and whatnot.
Lots of cool stuff in (and on - there's a cd sampler stuck to the cover) this issue of the UK's venerable new music mag, The Wire. #378's cover star is the long-running lo-fi Yorkshire psych act Ashtray Navigations, who have a new album out on VHF. Related to that, you also get a "Primer" giving instruction on Yorkshire Psychedelia (Ashtray Nav, Vibracathedral Orchestra, Astral Social Club, et. al.).
Also: a feature on the return of Flying Saucer Attack and a look back at the Bristol scene (FSA, Movietone, Crescent, Third Eye Foundation...), a piece on the late Ornette Coleman, and tons more, including of course the usual plethora of reviews. And yes, that Wire Tapper sampler cd too.
Avant-pop musician Julie Holter goes "into the wilderness" for her cover story in this issue of UK new music must-read magazine The Wire. Also inside: minimalist composer Arnold Dreyblatt (tested by the 'Invisible Jukebox'), field recordist Kink Gong, jazz-punks Blurt, oud player Khyam Allami, a Global Ear on the Peruvian capital of Lima, and plenty more interesting and varied content - including the usual loads of reviews!
As usual, a lot of good stuff in this issue of the UK (and world's) premiere magazine of 'new music'... For starters, a special batch of features pertaining to the late great Sun Ra and his legacy, with Hieroglyphic Being, Marshall Allen, Gilles Peterson and more. Then, also this issue: Storm Bugs, Christina Vantzou, Heatsick, Ernest Berk, and Randall Dunn from the Master Musicians Of Bukkake (doing the 'Invisible Jukebox' thing). Plus lots more, including tons of tons of informative reviews of course.
Gosh, well, The Wire magazine often seems like it's meant especially for us, but the content of this issue in particular really does. Heck, Christian Vander, the prime mover behind spiritual, science-fictional French prog legends Magma, is the cover star! Then, there's an 'Epiphanies' column about Devo, and the 'Inner Sleeve' this time is about Can's Tago Mago. Major reviews include releases by Patrick Cowley, The Necks, and Kode9. Plus plenty more, including ex-Hunting Lodger Seth Cooke, a 'Global Ear' on Austin, and Flying Lotus compadres Thundercat and Kamasi Washington. An issue of the Wire isn't complete with out features of people we hadn't ever heard of before either, there's some of that too, great! And, as a bonus, there's one of those Wire Tapper cd samplers stuck to the cover, too (with definitely some never-heard-befores on it!).
This month's (well, next month's, technically) issue of The Wire has singular jazz/synth artist Annette Peacock on the cover. Also: Powell, United Bible Studies, Attila Csihar (taking the "Invisible Jukebox" test), Harry Bertoia, a "Global Ear" scene report from Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and plenty more - including the usual slew of reviews. Huh, remember when having someone like Mayhem vocalist Attila Csihar appear in The Wire would have been really weird??
'Tis the time to Rewind! The Wire's always eagerly anticipated year-end roundup issue is here, with their top 50 records of the year, reflections and opinions from both their writers and various musicians, essays about 2015's issues and trends, and more. Plus, all the usual stuff you expect to find in an issue of The Wire, too - including a lot of reviews, The Invisible Jukebox (testing out the guys in Gnod this time), Gobal Ear (Zagreb), etc.
