Scratch Attack was a monthly two hour radio show dedicated to the art of turntablism, and ran for one year until it unfortunately got booted off of KPFA in Berkeley. These tracks are culled from archives of the show, and feature both live on the air and pre-recorded stuff made especially for the show. Released by the inimitable Billy Jam, whose taste is impeccable, the collection isn't endlessly wanky (as many dj comps are, let's face it), but interesting and varied good listening. With DJ T-Rock, D-Styles, DJ Shortkut, 8-Ball, Quest (Live Human), Golden Chyld, even DJs from Netherlands, England and Ireland. Lots of spoken snippets from the radio shows, including poor Shortkut talking about how his records were stolen at an airport. Really fun, and a nice document of the groundbreaking radio show.

Volume 2 of Hip Hop Slam's Scratch Attack series again compiles tracks from the legendary radio show. Scratch Attack was a monthly two hour radio show dedicated to the art of turntablism, and ran for one year until it unfortunately got booted off of KPFA in Berkeley. These tracks are culled from archives of the show, and feature both live on the air and pre-recorded stuff made especially for the show. The collection is tight and there's little filler involved, just really strong tracks from some of the best turntablists around, including a previously unreleased (clickety clackety boom boom) QBert piece, Italy's incredible Alien Army (whose scary tracks include dentist drills, Al Pacino, and werewolves), AQ-fave DJ Jester, DJ Quest & Live Human, Double Dee & Steinski, DJ Pone, DJ Spair, etc. Recommended.

With this third and final volume in the Scratch Attack series, beloved local hiphop go-getter Billy Jam has managed to collect together some of the most astonishingly good and exciting turntablist tracks out there, many of them having been performed live on his Scratch Attack radio show, with the studio tracks boasting just as much energy and creativity as the live stuff. The boys (Lyrics Born, DJ Shadow, Lateef, etc) went on to form Latyrx, Blackalicious, and other outfits, are famous all over the world now, and as soon as it started to get less than fun, they dissolved the label (which now lives on as Quannum so it's all good). Record Store Day alert! Here's a 2013 RSD release that we thankfully managed to get enough copies of to list... Please don't ask us to pronounce Theppabutr, but do ask us why this is so awesome - though the best answer is: just listen to it! International vinyl diggers, seeking out vintage grooves in far flung parts of the world, have made Molam music from Thailand into something that's now definitely a 'thing' in our world music section - we've had some other great Molam collections on the Sublime Freqencies label, for instance, so of course it's exciting to hear from 'The Man Behind The Molam Sound', Theppabutr Satirodchompu, responsible for the production work on the 17 tracks collected here from a variety of Molam artists. It's Molam of the modern variety (modern circa 1972-1975 that is, in this case), a form of electrified vocal music from Northeast Thailand that combines traditional folk melodies and ethnic instrumentation with electric guitars and electronic keyboards. Great stuff, all of it, lively and rhythmic, emotive and ear-wormy. Even though we don't understand a word, it's still immediately captivating. We love the keening singers and warbly organs, groovy beats and exotic vibes. If you haven't yet given Molam and closely related genre Luk Thung a try, this would be a great place to start. Seventies Molam like this is mighty fine stuff, up there with those 'Ethiopiques' recordings and certain Jamaican reggae of the same vintage, though we'd imagine the vocal stylings here might work for some folks and not so much for others. This limited vinyl version is a Record Store Day 2013 release - there is also a (presumably less-limited) non-RSD compact disc edition too, that we'll be stocking and will list next time, but we wanted to get this RSD vinyl listed now before they were gone! Especially since the double vinyl includes two bonus tracks not found on the cd version - as well as a 12"x14" poster, and download card for mp3s of all the tracks. Gatefold sleeve in faux woodgrain wrapper, liner notes, foldout poster inside.

Who can resist that combo? If you're one of the few who require more cajoling, we can tell you that this mix disc comes from those folks who brought you the Indie Rock Connect The Dots Book as well as the Gangsta Rap Coloring Book. Here's a rundown of the artists whose material Loomis encorporated into his mash-ups. match-ups and scratch-ups: Steve Albini, Elliott Smith, Charizma, Peanut Butter Wolf, The Roots, Violent Femmes, Jeru The Damaja, Jay-Z, David Cross, Sonic Youth, Dead Prez, Pavement, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Newcleus, The Rapture, Christopher Walken, !!!, Sir Mix A Lot, Har Mar Superstar, Beat Happening, Modest Mouse, DJ Shadow, Flaming Lips, Fog and MF Doom. As you can see music worlds collide in this mix -- the indie hipsters and the hiphopsters. Many of the combos here may be more cause for head scratchin' than vinyl scratchin'! Seven tracks plus a not so "hidden" track for only six buckeroos. Nice.

Hard to believe it's been five years since Mark Herlihy and Mark Wasserman started the now-legendary Future Primitive Soundsession series, the good time turntablist and DJ parties that basically catapulted the West Coast DJ breakbeat scene to international stature. The parties are, of course, still happening, and this cd, the fifth in the Future Primitive Recordings series, winningly replicates the feel-good bright 'n upbeat nature of the parties themselves. Good job! Features everyone from the amazing Z-Trip to Rob Swift, DJ Disk, Romanowski, Faust and Shortee, plus a short segment from the infamous 7-11 Slurpee set of all 45s performed by DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist. If you've never heard the fabulous Z-Trip/Radar and Cut Chemist/Shortkut Future Primitive discs, get those too.

Okay, I totally lamed out and forgot to go see this movie, argh! Judging from the soundtrack, the film (a feature documentary about scratching) must be amazing, although I'm not sure if any of the tracks here were actually in it -- this album is billed as I find some of the purely turntablist albums a bit much to take in one sitting, and so might you, but this album is so well put together, perfectly sequenced, and refreshingly varied in terms of DJ scratching styles, that I really enjoyed the listen. If you've never bought a turntablist record before, this is a great place to start. And people who've already got turntablist wax in their collections should give it a go too. Recommended. Sly Stone makes the cover (did he really have to wait 'til issue 32?), and inside there's the usual profusely and colorfully photo-illustrated, deep-digging stuff about the likes of Jean Grae, Egyptian Lover and Arabian Prince, Jimmy Cliff, Large Professor, Houston rappers HSID, and even South Korean B-boys! Among other things. In case you didn't know already, or figure it out from that run-down, Wax Poetics is THE magazine of cool hiphop/soul/funk/reggae/jazz hipness old and new, for vinyl fetishists and general groove-hounds, and as usual this issue is a must-read if you're at all into that stuff, and why the heck wouldn't you be?!

It's been way over twenty years since Wild Style came out. No doubt, one of the freshest, most fun and stylish hip-hop films ever made. A few years ago it played at the Red Vic, a great co-op run theater in the city, and those of us who had never seen it before totally fell in love with with the charm of the movie and the great early hip-hop soundtrack (not to mention to jaw dropping fashion that still looks so damn hot!). While there was a cd reissue of Wild Style a few years back, these really are the kind of tracks you want to have on wax. Brings us back to that so missed fun filled, groove rich sound of early hip-hop that was really the soundtrack to breakdancing, graffiting, and ultimate endless block parties. Turntable wizardry, flawless raw MC skills, all under the musical production of Fab 5 Freddy. Still sounds so damn good all these years later. And any of you who love stuff like Grandmaster Flash, Run DMC, Doug E Fresh, Kurtis Blow, and the like, Wild Style is definitely the ultimate document of hip-hop's glory days. So fresh!

Back in stock!!! Last list's RotW... We normally don't make "now available on cd" releases Record Of The Week. But there are plenty of reasons to do just that with this one! First off, C'MON! It's LEVIATHAN and XASTHUR! On the same disc! Two of the most important, and musically creative black metal one-man-hordes in the new wave of west coast black metal (NWOWCBM?) teamed up for the ultimate NWOWCBM one two punch. Singlehandedly (doublehandedly?) putting USBM back on the black metal map, and completely redefining the genre, grim and brutal and black for sure, but also totally bizarre and avant and experimental. Plus even you folks who picked up the vinyl versions will need this, as there are 4 bonus tracks, three of them are from Xasthur, a brand new unreleased track, a rehearsal track from 2004, and a Katatonia cover! The other bonus track is Leviathan's amazing version of Judas Iscariot's "Where The Winter Beals Incessant"! But even without the bonus tracks, this clash of the black titans is totally essential, some of the most beautifully blackened and furiously fucked up black metal you are ever likely to hear. Xasthur from Southern California and Leviathan from right here in SF are blackened brothers, both exploring similar themes of hate and misery, darkness and death, but coming at 'em from completely different sonic angles. Xasthur is more about mood and atmosphere, with thick swaths of fuzzy riffery, galloping drums, rumbling bass and agonised howls of despair, all dense and dark and claustrophobic. Leviathan is much more technical and a lot weirder, but no less moody, with ultra complex and bizarrely arranged parts, insane drumming, buzzing riffery, and hints of doom and progrock mixed into his bleak and blackened metalscapes. ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL!!

For most AQ customers, DJ Z-Trip needs no introduction. Nor does this new live, limited edition (natch) cd from Z-Trip need much of a description! He's the man, what can we say? Along with DJs Jester and Q-bert, Z-Trip is one of AQ's favorite turntablists, always delightfully mashing up the hip hop with classic rock (and doing it *live* not on a computer, as he points out in his liner notes, and as you'll hear on this cd). Sure it's a gimmick, but it works! Plus he's playing this stuff 'cause he loves it. Here he provides 74 more minutes of 'Uneasy Listening' for fans, "to hold you over 'til the major label album drops" as it says on the back of the cd. Sure sounds like a party. Janis Joplin, Outkast, Tool, Black Sabbath, Rush, Run-DMC, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Joan Jett, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, and a zillion other disparate artists all feed into the Z-Trip blender as he shows off his ADD DJing skills at mixing the beats and riffs. Cutting stuff up the way he does, you'll actually hear more classic rock in the 74 minutes of this cd than you would over the same span of time on a radio station like The Bone, ferchrisakes! Z-Trip was kind enough to bring some by the store himself when he was just in town on tour, and he told us he didn't make a whole heck of a lot of 'em -- this is definitely not gonna be in print for long, so be quick or be deadly bummed you didn't get this rockin' Z-Trip document.

Back in stock! (But act fast!) DJ Z-Trip and the rest of the Phoenix-based Bombshelter crew excel at mixing rock music into the hip hop subgenre of turntablism. Z-Trip has for years been performing his Monsters of Rock set, and you may have already heard him As we said before, Uneasy Listening is super rare, we only know of a couple stores to whom Z-Trip brought the disc, and he will not be making any more after the thousand are gone. SORRY. It's always heartening when the standout record of the week is a local production. The Future Primitive Soundsession has proved itself a turntablist event par excellence, consistently scheduled once every couple of months for the past year and a half, featuring heavyweight scratchers from all over the country. The Invisibl Skratch Piklz, Beat Junkies and the Cut Chemist are regularly scheduled, as well as the Bombshelter crew from Phoenix. It's simply one of the best parties in town; you'll find people of all shapes, sizes and races enjoying the music. This cd features Bombshelter talents Z-Trip and Radar who unashamedly make use of their '70s and '80s metal record collections (Pink Floyd, Boston) to delirious effect. Will appeal to hip hop AND rock lovers (imagine that!)

SORRY. Shingo does it again. The local via Japan producer/rapper has brought together Del and the amazing DJ Z-Trip for an excellent hip hop party. Del raps on the straight up hip hop Dynasty track, while Z-trip offers a remix of Dynasty that strips out everything but the super loopy bass and heavy percussion. Shingo raps on the distortion-guitar-laced Monster, and the record also features instrumental versions and some bonus Z-trip breaks for scratching with. The packaging is excellent, as with all of Shingo's productions. Remember his first cd that came gorgeously packaged like a hardcover book, then there was his video that was made of cardboard not plastic (it still works), now there's this 12 which comes in a clear vinyl sleeve and includes a sticker sheet so you can apply the circle labels yourself to the record, plus stickers of a cartoon version of Del, and other characters. So cute, so good.

Awww. Best friends. And they're into Star Wars too! There's a pair of Stormtroopers in the cover photo as well as in the considerably more saucy pics inside (we can assume they're supposed to be Z-Trip and DJ Emile) and the disc art is of the Death Star, but that seems to be the extent of this release's Star Wars-iness. However, just as Star Wars fans are a somewhat obsessive breed, so too are fans of DJ acrobatics. If you count yourself among those legions (either specifically a fan of Z-Trip or of turntablism in general) then you know that the resurfacing of this long-lost mix is definitely a reason to celebrate. AWOL for eight years, these recordings have finally been rediscovered, remastered and released on cd. A very welcome, truly Z-Trippy release following his last, remarkably un-Z-Trippy (i.e, non-DJ, non-sampled) major label album Shifting Gears. Spine-tinglin' and ultra funky! Yes, this is why we dig him (and DJ Emile's sure no slouch either, going toe to toe with best bud Z-Trip in the Bombshelter)! As with all Z-Trip mixes, we expect these to fly out of here so get yr order in early...
