Another new name (at least to us) in the wonderfully whacked world of grime and dubstep. Pinch are way on the super minimal end of the spectrum, constructing super spare rhythms, dubby and seriously spacious, with drifting sitar-like buzz over the top and incredibly weird croaking frog synths, weird burping bblllllaaaeeerrrrp's that have your speakers rattling and threatening to fall to pieces. Then suddenly, part way through the A side a crazy bass line drops, HUGE and thick and snarling and slithering and squirming, a gurgly, wiggly, warbly buzz, surrounded by glistening clouds of insect-like effects and and alien swooshes and bleeps. The B side takes the same track and drenches it in still more dub, making it even more loping and laid back, with strange percussive sounds mixed in, and THAT incredible bass line, but processed and pitched like crazy to sound like some sort of alien ray gun constantly firing in time with the rhythm. Awesome. Another nudge towards the dancefloor. Must... resist...

First of all let's just say: Highly recommended for fans of similar hybrid-minded artists like Amon Tobin, Boom Bip, Nightmares on Wax, Kid Koala, Fridge, etc! With his second full length for Warp, the label that rarely puts out bad records, Prefuse 73 has created a downtempo breakbeat electronica album with a healthy grounding in hip hop. Yet the tracks with rapping don't stick out like sore thumbs (like on some lesser records I can think of) -- the album instead works as a happy, seamless whole, with cut-up buried rapping seguing into jazzy groove numbers blending into synth workouts next to glitch-filled triumphs of editing and then there's a vocal snippet and so on... There are no filler tracks, it's all quality -- bass-heavy, booty shakin', delicately clickety clackety *quality*. It's also delightfully unpredictable; you never know where it's going to take you next. Smoke pot to this record, or at least listen loud with headphones. The AQ staff was unable to get behind Mr Herren's first album but this one is just so good... With guests Tommy Guerrero, Daedelus, Mr. Lif, and more. SORRY. From the folks who brought you the modern DJ classics by Cut Chemist & Shortkut and Z-Trip & Radar, this is the Future Primitive label's 3rd release - a studio turntablist album from the collaboration between Mr. Dibbs, DJ Jel, and MC Dose. Similiar in scope to Mixmaster Mike's Anti-Theft Device and is full of Illuminati references and wild scratching.

Subtitled "A short treatise on the strange occurences of Janucember 69th in the year 00", this album might fool you into thinking it's hyperactive hip hop ridiculosity in the style of Dr. Octagon. And while the lyrics can descend to the point that a narrator is talking about sniffing Rush in high school, the music is thrilling. Deep dub bass rumbles, layers of clanging and waves of intensity -- your regular mindfuck stuff for those of you ready to explore the outer bounds of dub/hiphop experimentation. This is one of the best albums our new favorite label WordSound has yet released, and we highly recommend it.

Yeah, skits are stupid (although some of the skits on here had me giggling a bit) but Prince Paul is THE skit man. That's sort of what he's known for. Which is kind of a shame seeing as how banging the tracks on this new record are. And it's the skits that will keep people from making it to the actual tracks. This is still basically a party record, but the beats are BIG and funky and pretty weird, with amazing production and all sorts of wicked guests: Erick Sermon, Kokane, Masta Ace, Guru, Planet Asia, Chuck D, Ice-T, Chubb rock, MF doom and more. No way to avoid the skits so you just gotta grin and bear it. At least a couple of the skits have Dave Chapelle who is pretty damn funny. Although 'Psychoanalysis' had its moments, this is definitely a return to form. Ridiculosity from the hip hopper extraordinaire who came to prominence as part of De La Soul. A concept album of sorts, featuring an amazing array of guests including Kool Keith of Dr. Octagon, Big Daddy Kane, Chubb Rock, Biz Markie, De La Soul, Chris Rock, Everlast, Sadat X, Xzibit, Kid Creole, and more. Still displaying his love of 'the skit', 'Prince Among Thieves' includes about 16 or 17 (one between almost every song!), although here, they are ostensibly clips/teasers from the film of the same name.

Re-release of the album first issued last year by Brooklyn's cool Wordsound label. One of hip hop's only remaining producers with an over-the-top original sense of humor, Prince Paul here makes fun of everything and everyone. Includes 3 bonus tracks plus an Automator (of Dr. Octagon) remix of one track, none of which appeared on the original.

Some of you may remember Prince Po as one half of the nineties hip hop outfit Organized Confusion with his partner Pharoahe Monch. While Monch went on to great solo success, Po kept a seriously low profile, almost disappearing completely from the musical radar. Po resurfaced a few years back and met up with Danger Mouse when he was working on the DM and Jemini Ghetto Pop Life record and the two decided to work on a new record together. So here it is. A massive slab of classic style hip hop, updated and modernised with all sorts of sonic fuckery and freaky production, with Danger Mouse producing a handful of tracks as well as Madlib, Jel, J-Zone and even Richard X! Po handles the mic most of the time, but gives it up once in a while for MF Doom, Raekwon, Jemini The Gifted One and J-Ro from Tha Alkaholiks. Anyone who dug the DM and Jemini record will love this. It's a LOT harder and a little meaner, but just like the DM record, this is the sort of shit that should be ALL OVER the radio and all over MTV. Funky and hard and funny and catchy and booming and bombastic and so so so good. As always, AMAZING Lex packaging, gold leaf, embossed, die cut sleeve, inexplicably though, there's a big ol' sticker not on the plastic, but RIGHT on the sleeve itself. Bad move. But fucking great record!

A truly un-inspired work of mediocrity from Pat. Apparently Mr. Pat has never heard of off beats, syncopation, or any other rhythmmic device other than a mechanical, metronomic delivery of his tedious words. The album starts off with its 'hit' number "Still Ridin' Clean", in which Pat proclaims he's "still makin' cheese" while getting his dick sucked. I apologise to all our customers who *were* eating breakfast while reading this. Our man from the street himself, Allan Horrocks, informs us that "cheese" is the new lingo for money, or "dough". While that eases my mind slightly in regards to Pat's hygiene and sexual proclivities, the song still solicits its humorous effect on us when listening to it. But I swear Pat switches the first half of this phrase to "still eatin' cheese" a few times in the song. The suckers at Columbia Records who put this out were kind enough to include a FREE limited edition bonus disc for die hard Project Pat fans who buy their copies sooner rather than later.

We wish we could say that this soundtrack album to the new Spike Lee film is the PE comeback we've all been waiting for--but maybe the Stephen Stills collaboration on the title track wasn't the best idea ever for reestablishing what was formerly one of rap's best acts... Nonetheless, this is radio-ready and very catchy.

THE classic PE album. Best album of 1988? Probably.

This is a no frills dvd with a simple offering. P.E. LIVE. In LONDON. 1987. Their first European tour! Extras are very spare here, mostly just an available voice over by Dr. Dre. This definitely makes a case for Flavor Flav. Without him, there's no way they would have had the mass appeal they enjoyed. Regardless, it's an awesome document of P.E.'s raw energy at this time, just about to release their classic, It Takes A Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back.

The Bass (Chuck D). The Treble (Flavor Flav). The Bomb Squad bringin' the Noise. The Big Clocks. And, of course, the ground-breaking, revolutionary social-political message. If you're not thinking Public Enemy, where were you in the late '80s/early '90s?? Where are you now? PE were definitely one of the most radical, innovative, and entertaining hip hop groups EVER. Musically *and* politically. But if we have to tell you that...well, you should probably get this album immediately. It's disc of greatest hits (not to be confused with an album the already did called Greatest Misses). There's 18 tracks here and you absolutely can't go wrong with almost all of 'em. You get two cuts from Yo! Bum Rush The Show (1987), five from It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back (1988), five from Fear Of A Black Planet (1990), and three from Apocalpyse 91...The Enemy Strikes Black (1991). Plus one from Greatest Misses (1992), one from Muse Sick-N-Hour Mess Age (1994), and one from the He Got Game soundtrack (1998). So it's mostly classic-era PE, with nothing to worry about from later albums like There's A Poison Going On or Revolverlution. Definitely a nice mix, and a good introduction to these rap masters, complete with Liner notes from Harry Allen and Adam Yauch. Though, honestly, you really should have all their first three or four albums in your collection in their entirety!!

Rick Rubin-produced 1987 debut from everyone's favorite rappers Public Enemy.

Thanks goes to Drew of Matmos for bringing this to our attention, a 1996 release of Miami Bass style raps by a pair of pre-teens. Several nursery rhymes and children's songs get the treatment, including showstopper "Hokey Pokey". Our favorite "novelty" record of the moment.

Push Button Objects, the Miami-based hip hop producer, here releases an interesting new track, 360 Degrees, with mic duties handled by Del tha Funky Homosapien and Def Jux's Mr Lif, and nice turntablist scratching courtesy three-time DMC champ DJ Craze.

Debut solo disc from Tribe Called Quest mainman Q-Tip! Busta Rhymes guests. Pretty good.

Finally out, it's the DVD film of Wave Twisters, which is a truly incredible film edited to correspond exactly with Invisibl Skratch Pikl DJ QBert's album of the same name. Even the vocal snippets from the record become dialogue on the film, a seamless integration! Needless to say, the film is hilarious, with the hero Inner Space Dental Commander trying to revive the four pillars of hip hop (graffiti, breakdancing, rapping, and DJing) while the evil villains played by the Skratch Piklz thwart his attempts... There's all kinds of animation too -- stop motion, photographic, etc. Also included are film stills presented specifically so people can animate them themselves, creating new episodes in the Wave Twisters saga, the trailer for the turntablist film Scratch, deleted scenes, a commentary track from the filmmakers, subtitles in French, German, Japanese, Russian, etc, and extra live footage of the Scratch Piklz in action. Pretty incredible! This dvd has been flying out the door ever since we got it a few weeks ago.

50 minute video starring former Skratch Piklz Qbert, D-Styles, DJ Flare, and Yogafrog. All animated! We haven't seen it yet, but hear that the story involves personifications of the four arts of hip hop (MCing, B-boying, Graffiti, and DJing) who are being oppressed by an evil lord. For those of you who don't want to buy this video, we are renting it (local customers only).

SORRY. The Bay Area's own DJ Qbert, one of the most famous turntablists in the world, proves himself a pretty great teacher and comedian in this how-to-scratch DIY dvd. Whether you're a turntablist or not, this is *delightful* to watch. He demonstrates over 25 different scratches, beginning by talking about each scratch's history -- who invented 'em and when -- then breaks the move down into its parts. The demos loop so you can just leave 'em playing until you've mastered the crab, the lazer, the phaser, the swipe, etc., not to mention you can view the scratch demos from four different angles! Qbert looks at the camera a lot so you feel like he's talking right atcha, plus he's totally sweet 'n nice, not a trace of attitude, no talking down to the viewer at all. There's a whole section of tips and tricks where he demonstrates how to set up your turntable and customize it to your own liking, how to make your own slipmats, how to fix a record that's wobbly cos its center hole is too big, explains why fingertip moistener is better than lickin' yer fingers, even how to count bars. There is a volume issue with the dvd, though, it keeps fluctuating, but it's not terribly annoying and it never drops out completely. (And I suspect that it's my computer, not the dvd, at fault.) There's even a battles section with several djs for you to trade scratches with. OK, this is how brilliant Qbert and his cohorts are: instead of taking the easy way out by just filming himself scratching, with pauses for you to scratch back, each of the battles (which are arranged in order of difficulty) have visual themes, like level 1's Dek Demon who is wearing a black cape, way oversized devil mask, and is surrounded by flames. Really. Another cute one features Spiderman scratching on a bus while another masked man is stitting next to him steering the bus. Pretty funny shit, you could just set it up at a party and let it run. Makes learning fun! As if all that wasn't enough, there's some plum extras, like a mock "other videos in this series" section where Q demonstrates how to do plumbing repair with the help of a sock puppet, the trailer for his animated film Wave Twisters, even a hidden surprise. The tone of the whole thing is casual and precise, he's constantly making jokes, and his love for the craft is clear. Get this dvd! You never know when you're gonna wanna learn how to scratch, plus, this glimpse into the mind, craft, and funny bone of Qbert is just about the nicest, friendliest, most hilarious thing I've seen in a long time. Highly recommended.

SORRY. The first volume of DJ Qbert's Complete Do-It Yourself scratching DVD was a huge hit 'round these parts due to its irresistable combination of both useful how-to-scratch DJ tips and humor. Even if you yourself wouldn't want to scratch a record with a ten foot pole, as long as you have an interest as a listener in hip hop and turntablist music, it was a pretty fascinating introduction to the basics of scratch DJing (or 'skratch' as they spell it). And Qbert is just such a charming guy. Volume one seems to be out of print at the moment (hopefully just between pressings or something) but here's volume two! Subtitled "Skratch Sessions" this takes up where volume one left off, providing budding scratch djs with TONS of stuff that'll help improve your skills (or just entertain). Over 20 top DJs appear in various band or battle situations where you can "jam" along with them at home. Multiple video angles and audio tracks make this one extremely interactive DVD. And the DIY lessons don't stop with just DJing, you get Qbert & co.'s home improvement tips as well. Super great.

Ok turtablist fans, you all know that DJ Q-Bert is the bomb. Seeing him master his custom-made QFO (a battery-powered turntable with built-in mixer) is totally amazing. It would be great if a dvd about him actually showed his skratch-wizzardry predominately throughout. However, Live: Australia-Asia shows a little too much of all the most boring parts of being on tour: the airports, the non-partying hotel rooms, sitting in cabs, etc. Q-bert seems to be having good time though, what with the crowds, the ladies, the female DJ he crushes out on... Die-hard fans of Q-bert will want to see this regardless of the poor editing, just simply to see footage of him skratching up a storm and to get a feel for the man behind the QFO. We just wish there was more skratching footage throughout this region-free dvd.

Turntablist pro Q-bert here has compiled a *great* breaks record for aspiring DJs. (That's right, his name's not on it but that's who put this together.) There're dozens of tracks, long enough for scratching yet also short enough that if you put this on at a party and just left it alone it wouldn't get too boring. The breaks are uniformly fun and exciting -- lots of James Brown yelps, and I also heard Chic and Run DMC in there. Funk, hiphop and disco experts will recognize much more than I did. A PERFECT companion to Q-bert's DIY Turntablist dvd.

We don't sell a lot of breaks records here, but we know a few of you folks out there dig em so once in a while when we stumble across a good one we like to let everybody know about it. Most breaks records are tools and nothing but. A straight listen through would bore you to tears. But this Quake Breax 12" is a whole 'nother ball of wax. I just listened to it the whole way through and instead of being boring, it's super repetitive and hypnotic. It doesn't sound all that straight up danceable to us, but that's a point in its favor. It's funky, but in a creepy, proggy Goblin (yes, THAT Goblin) kind of way, with brooding basslines, haunting synths and some wicked live funky drumming. It's all very intense and sad and, well VERY prog sounding. Which if you know us, is obviously a good thing! These Goblinesque breaks are augmented with all sorts of weird little glitchy extras: minor key piano, super distorted lo fi drum machine breakbeats, stuttery chopped up loops. Good stuff. And if you're actually a DJ don't sleep on this one!

Another great installment in Mochilla's series of global DJ mixes documenting the crate-digging treasures of one DJ's trip to a far off land. The last one we listed was Madlib's killer Speto Da Ruo: Dirty Brasilian Crates Vol. 1 and what that was to Brazilian Popular Music, this one is to Ethiopian music of all varieties from the funky to the folkloric. Culled from a 2004 trip to Ethiopia with the Soundway label's Miles Cleret, Quantic met Mulatu Astatke and first discussed plans for his first trip to Los Angeles for a legendary 2009 concert performed with a full orchestra and jazz legends Bennie Maupin and The Tribe's Phil Ranelin. Most of the records played on this mix are over 30 years old, and their dusty crackle is often left intact. But don't expect this to be merely an Ethiopiques series rehash. While it starts in familiar ethio-jazz territory it veers seamlessly into traditional chanting, street festivals and performers, exotic cinematic instrumentals and evocative ballads. A near hour long seamless mix of surging energy and warm beauty for hot summer nights!
