SORRY. Matt Kelly's "Cool Beans" zine mutates into Uncool Beans this time around, with cover art depicting Beanie Baby As Roadkill (very nice). Interview with Mudhoney, PEE tour diary written by AQ's very own Andee Connors (who also writes a hilarious review of the Dynamo metalfest in Holland), The Worst Of San Francisco, more cabbie insider trivia, and a CD featuring 28 tracks from the likes of PEE, Mudhoney, Eric Gaffney (ex-Sebadoh), MK Ultra, 50 Million, etc.

Once upon a time not so long ago a Scottish gent (and dandy, tweaked and twisted line drawing artist) named David Shrigley made an LP size book filled with his song-less song lyrics. 'Twas a novel concept which was welcomed and gobbled up by many -- the first edition sold out right away! Of course some of the folks who were charmed by it just happened to be musicmakers themselves, and the novel concept to compose and perform music for the lyrics was born. The awesome results (39 of them total!) are featured here on this double cd which comes packaged in its own cd-sized hardcover 100-page book. The list of contributors is nothing short of stimulating: David Byrne, Arab Strap's Aidan Moffat, TV On The Radio, Deerhoof, Mt. Eerie and Mt. Eerie's Phil Elverum, Grizzly Bear, Franz Ferdinand, Hot Chip, Trans Am, Islands, Tussle, The Dead Science, Final Fantasy, Scout Niblett, R. Stevie Moore, Cibelle, Les Georges Leningrad, Max Tundra, Yacht, Roger Ferguson, Dirty Projectors, The Curtains, Casiotone For The Painfully Alone, Liars, and more! The renditions are as varied as you'd expect, ranging from the sparsely twee pop to the angular dance rock to the tenderest indie folk to the most anticipated indie art-rock perturberances. Still, not at all unexpected it's the elder statesman of the bunch David Byrne whose offering is most successful -- at once showing a genuine sensitivity to the original artist's work while maintaining his own artful and whimsical identity and making the song wholly his own! Pretty great.

In 2002, Gallery 16 here in San Francisco exhibited The Bowie Show, which collected art, writing, and music that takes David Bowie as inspiration. This is an arty, spiral bound, full color, glossy-paged book with a cd and nicely embossed cover. Contributors include Rick Moody, Jason Mecier, Michelle Tea, Doug Coupland, Cliff Hengst, Scott Hewicker, Ann Magnuson, etc. And the (all exclusive!) tracks on the cd are each covers of a song off Bowie's Low album. The music runs the gamut from Matmos' slinky electronics on "A New Career in a New Town" to Troll's simmering Talk-Talk-meets-Nina-Simone take on "Warszawa". Other musical participants include Glenn Donaldson of local faves Thuja), Wayne Smith of Aero Mic'd, The Sadnesses, Tom Recchion and more.

Five year anniversary music issue, featuring Cibo Matto, Money Mark, Automator, LA turntablists the Beat Junkies, DJ Krush, and... Shu Uemura the makeup tycoon. Only 1000 of the issues come with the free Money Mark flexidisc (exclusive material he recorded at the Giant Robot loft), but luckily all of ours have it! There's also the usual little article by Windy talking about "music no one's ever going to hear".

Where to begin with a review of a cd-rom that includes over 1,500 articles and reviews? Well, this is what I can tell you upon first examination of this disc, but many many hours could be spent exploring the material to be found here. Basically, this is an cross-platform (Mac and PC) cd-rom archive of every issue of Archie Patterson's Eurock fanzine, from 1973 to today, 45 issues worth. Eurock, as you might guess, specializes in European progressive rock sounds (although you'll also find coverage of scenes in Japan, Mexico, and other non-European places). Beginning in '73, it was initially focused on the contemporary krautrock scene (with features on Can, Amon Duul, Tangerine Dream in issue #1!), but as you browse through the issues you'll find stuff on Magma, Kraftwerk, RIO, Guru Guru, and then soon you'll be reading about Franco Battiato, Nektar, Lars Hollmer...it's endless. The Wire review of this of course bagged on the exclusion of much UK prog-rock (as if you'd rather read about Gentle Giant than Le Orme), but Patterson could hardly go back in a time machine and add stuff to the old issues of his zine -- what they wrote then is what you get now, and that's the beauty of it, the sense of "being there", of discovery, and all that...I almost wish that the magazine had been archived PDF fashion, so that you could actually see the original page layout and funky fonts. At least there's a gallery of cover art (unfortunately not viewable at full-size), for fans of the '70 underground press aesthetic. Oh, and there's some bonus video material as well, an Urban Sax concert (sorry, haven't investigated that yet...) and a cut each from Amon Dull II ("Eye-Shaking King", goddamn!) and Popul Vuh from German TV. Very cool! Oh, and then the regular audio portion of this cd is some inoffensive New Agey symphonic music from one Hiro Kawahara, which might have its uses when trying to relax after several hours of computer-screen staring eyestrain that this cd-rom will surely cause. A fantastic item for folks interested in this sort of stuff (you know who you are)!

SORRY. Revenant has once again done a swank job of a reissue. Originally only available on double CD, Revenant has now just reissued the collection in a tri-fold double LP set. Smithsonian Folkways' influential "Anthology of American Folk Music" was a massive three volume set compiled by the eccentric artist and archivist Harry Smith. Originally released in 1952 and reissued on CD in 1997, it stands as a pioneering look into the earliest recordings of awe-inspiring folk music of the '20s and '30s. This fourth volume of the series had been collected around the same time, but had never been released until 2000. Like the CD version, this double LP set is lavishly packaged. It includes a 20 page booklet, a poster and the LPs come pressed on clear vinyl. Like the original Folkways Anthology, this smaller collection features the work of some of our country's most important musical figures from the turn of the 20th century including Lead Belly, The Carter Family, Robert Johnson, The Monroe Brothers, Uncle Dave Macon, the Memphis Jug Band, and many more. It also features in depth narratives on Smith and his work from Greil Marcus, Ed Sanders, John Cohen, Dick Spottswood, and Fahey. Simply outstanding.

Before you go get goin' too excited about this new issue of IMFJ, we gotta tell you a couple things. First the good news, yes this does come with not one but two full cds crammed with cutting edge music for you to check out. Lots of cool avant-garde experimentation. But, none of it's by Japanese artists. This is the "Special Issue: Berlin" and so it focusses on that European scene, including folks like Axel Dorner, Christof Kurzmann, Annette Krebs, Phillip Sollmann, F.S. Blumm, Tony Buck, Jason Forrest, Joe Williamson, Andrea Neumann, and many others (Germans, Italians, Americans, etc... just no Japanese!). Japanophiles thereby be warned. People who like minimal electronics and out-there improvised music in general though should still be quite interested! But (another but), also a bit frustrated, unless fluent in Japanese. Because unlike previous issues of IMFJ, this one has no English text -- the interviews, articles and reviews are all in Japanese. Kind of a bummer for us, eh? But, you still get the two discs of music, and some pictures and stuff to look at, so it might still be worth it if you're interested in hearing what these cats are up to in Berlin.

A massive 4 cd collection packaged beautifully in an oversized hardcover book from Stephen O'Malley's (Sunn, Burning Witch, etc...) Anja label. Featuring a who's who of underground expreimental ambient noise-icians, each doing a song about a different flower. Features: Circle, Amber Asylum, Alio Die, Ultra, Jonathan Coleclough, Troum, Steve Roden, Kawabata Makoto, Inade, Mnortham, Aube, Chaos As Shelter, Lotus Eaters and tons more. Absolutely gorgeous, looking and sounding. And of course quite limited.

We have VERY few of these, as in just 3 or 4, so we'll keep this brief. But holy cow, is this something else, a massive 88 page oversized soft cover coffee table book, accompanied by two cds containing unreleased recordings made at the Institute For Psychoacoustics And Electronic Music at Ghent University in Belgium, which is sort of like the Belgian equivalent to the GRM studios in France, or DIEM in Denmark. The book celebrates 50 years and includes tons of rare photos of the various instruments and their operators, as well as a pretty extensive study of the Institute's contribution to the development of electronic music, the text in both English and Dutch, the book alone would be worth the price of admission, but the cds too, featuring tons of amazing music, from some names we recognize, but loads we don't, and the sounds, wow! Insane to think how prescient some of these noisemakers and academics were, considering much of this sounds like it could be contemporary, there are wild cut up collages, whirring blurry soundscapes reminiscent of the Caretaker, woozy, warbling ambience a la Philip Jeck, lots of drones, and abstract Musique Concrete, tape music and more, all recorded between 1963 and 1999. Again, the book is incredible, the music too, dark and mysterious, haunting and wildly experimental, SUPER recommended for weird music obsessives, and fans of early electronic / tape music. There's a good chance we won't be able to get more, so order super quick if you want one of the few we have, and be prepared to wait a while for more to come in, assuming we can even get more at all once we run out...

Never been much for poetry, but this one was tough to resist. First you've got a big ol' book of poetry, most of it actually quite good, from young American poets, and all about love, as the title and subtitle suggest. Very few names were familiar, David Berman of the Silver Jews and Jeff Tweedy being the only two we immediately recognized, but then again we're not exactly plugged into the poetry scene, hip and young or otherwise. So besides a pretty cool book of poetry you've got a cd with exclusive tracks from VIC CHESNUTT, COCOROSIE, DOUNG MARTSCH (Bulit To Spill), MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC COMPANY (Songs:Ohia), NINA NASTASIA, RICHARD BUCKNER, RAY'S VAST BASEMENT, SILVER JEWS, MARK MULCAHY (Miracle Legion), JENNY TOOMEY, NANANG TATANG, NEW RADIANT STORM KING and more!!

It's just past the fortieth anniversary of the Summer of Love, and while we San Franciscans have never stopped being reminded of those legendary months of drug abuse, panhandling and squatting, perhaps the rest of the world needs a large dose of that dirty hippy love. And in what better form than this latest installment of the Nuggets box set series? Unlike past volumes, what we have here is a 120 page book full of rare photos detailing the scene and 4 cds compiled under various themes: "Seismic Rumbles", "Suburbia", "Summer Of Love," and "The Man Can't Bust Our Music". Beginning with Dino Valenti's original version of "Let's Get Together" and ending with the Youngblood's more famous version, this Nuggets edition includes many famous and familiar San Francisco bands including Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe & The Fish, The Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Count Five, Blue Cheer, The Great Society, The Charlatans, Sly and The Family Stone, Santana and Big Brother and The Holding Company. Some with more than one track. But the real price of admission is for the obscurities: The Syndicate of Sound, The Harbinger Complex, The Stained Glass, Fifty Foot Hose, Kak, Salvation, The Vejtables, The Wildflower, The Tikis, The Frantics, The Serpent Power, and Frumious Bandersnatch. There are only a few omissions, like Cold Blood, The Fire Escape, Tripsichord, and Parish Hall (though some would argue those aren't really omissions at all) that would make for a more well-rounded collection focusing more on the obscurities (the reason we like Nuggets in the first place) rather than the heavyweights who are quite well represented on plenty of other more mainstream compilations. But if anyone is looking for the definitive San Francisco music experience of the sixties, you probably won't find one more lovingly detailed than this. Trip on and Trip out!

Once again, right up front, be warned. We only got twenty of these and we were already told by our distributor that we will NOT be able to get more. Pity too, because this is an amazing compilation, gorgeous looking AND sounding. This definitive document of Norwegian improv/electronica/ambient/jazz/whatever label Rune Grammofon, a full sized, full color hardcover book / double cd compilation is the sort-of-sequel to the Love Comes Shining compliation from a few years back, and celebrates 5 years and thirty releases. The book, designed by Kim Hiorthoy, includes an interview with RG bossman Rune Kristofferson, essays from Rob Young of the Wire magazine and designer Adrian Shaugnessy, and features tons of album covers, sketches for covers, photos, and design elements that will no doubt be quite familiar to fans of the labels uniquely minimal aesthetic. It's all a little self congratulatory but what the hell, it's their party! The cds contain exclusive tracks from Supersilent, Biosphere, Alog, Food, Deathprod, Jaga Jazzist, Arve Henriksen, Kim Hiorthoy, Nils Okland, Phonophani, Archetti/Wiget, Lasse Marhaug, Information, Martin Horntveth, Fe-mail, Svalastog, Skyphone, Andre Borgen, Isak Anderssen, Stronen/Storlokken, Oivind Idso, Andreas Meland and Susanna and the Magical Orchestra as well as previously released tracks from SPUNK, Maja Ratkje, Tove Nilsen, Scorch Trio, Arne Nordheim, Jono el Grande and Monolight. Really good stuff. So act fast!

"Oacis" -- an acronym for "Optics Acoustics Calculated In Seconds" -- documents the progress of the German collective Raster / Noton, which has been busily constructing works of utopian minimalism over the past five years. Raster / Noton rigorously applies the motto "less is more" to not only their post-techno productions, but also their intrinsically simple design aesthetic. This was exemplified by 1999's "20 to 2000 series," in which simple magnets connected a series of 12 clam shell cd cases to form what could be a model for a nanotechnist coil of energy distribution. This spindly construction perfectly housed the series's electronic minimalism, constructed out of the all mighty trio of digital synthesis -- the click, the ping, and the boom. "Oacis" is a 100 page book with lots of articles expounding on the label's digital purity (including a rather poetic piece by The Wire's Rob Young), lots of live 'action' shots of Carsten Nicolai and Frank Bretschneider staring intently at their laptops, and of course an ultra-clean design. And in addition to all this lovely stuff to look at and to read, the accompanying cd is one of the best things to yet emerge from Raster.

Basically, just what the title says. A real nice package, as we'd expect from the Dust To Digital label.

We're beginning to think, in addition to our biweekly Record(s) of the Week, we might just have to institute a Box Set of the Week. There's so many amazing reissues, so many collections of lost gems, we'd probably just make them Records of the Week proper if they weren't so expensive... this item is would be a good example. But you know what, screw it, for what you get, $45 bucks is not that much, a massive gorgeous book and two cds. So much amazing music, and fascinating graphics. Let's just do it. Record of the Week!!! Alright. Feel better already. And it makes sense. If you're anything like us, and you sort of must be since you're reading the AQ list, this kind of HAD to be record of the week, everything we love, strange sounds from all over the world, dusty record crackle, tape hiss and vinyl warble, a beautiful music related object� A total slam dunk. And there's the fact that EVERYONE who works here has one or wants one. Dust-To-Digital are like the new Smithsonian Folkways, constantly unearthing sonic treasures and then assembling them into beautifully curated collections. And we just can't get enough. There was the Goodbye, Babylon box, collecting classic gospel music, housed in a huge wooden box with raw cotton and a huge book, the Fonotone Records box, 5 cds and a huge book in a cigar box with a bottle opener, The Art Of Field Recording set, that WAS just like a continuation of the Smithsonian Folkways series, and assorted other single disc reissues, all meticulously researched, fantastically laid out, and packed with some of the most amazing sounds you'll ever hear. But this new one, Victrola Favorites: Artifacts From Bygone Days, just might be our favorite yet. Not only is it an amazing and head spinningly varied collection of musics, from African folk to country yodeling to Cantonese Opera, big band jazz to Hawaiian guitar to rhythm and blues, music from all over, Burma, Japan, Greece, Thailand, Portugal, China, Egypt, but the design is fantastic, a cloth bound hard cover book, with almost NO text, what text here is thoughtfully sequestered at the very end of the book. Where most boxes are packed with notes and recording info, the bulk of this handsome book is made up of gorgeous archival images, 78 labels, old record tins, posters, pamphlets, old greyed photographs, mailing labels, instruction booklets, all sort of Victrola ephemera. It would be well worth it just as an art book. Makes you dread the oncoming MP3 takeover, what will future generations discover of our music, old busted hard drives? None of these cool old sleeves, decaying from years of moisture and insects, gorgeous little visual artifacts offering clues as to the music contained inside. But of course it's NOT just a book, included are two cds, a collection of various recordings drawn from the ongoing Victrola Favorites project, masterminded by AQ faves the Climax Golden Twins. Where old 78s are played on a vintage Victrola, and recorded with a microphone placed in front of the Victrola, none of that digitizing and cleaning up the sound, removing pops and clicks, this is all about the experience of listening to old 78's, sitting in a darkened parlor, in a big overstuffed chair, the air alive with dust motes, gorgeously crackly and timeworn sounds washing over you. And listening to these tracks, it does in fact feel just like that, or alternately, it's like hopping on a sonic time machine and traveling all over the world, different places, different times, a modern day Folkways, hopping in and out of times to capture brief snippets of sound and then moving on. So fantastic. If you love the Sublime Frequencies releases, and the Secret Museum Of Mankind series, this is essential listening. And the amazing thing is that even with all of these disparate sounds and styles, as a whole the collection flows if not seamlessly, in a way that is oh so pleasing to the ears. Korean bamboo flute solos, amazing and amazingly insane yodeling, a bit of Arabian country dance music, super dramatic Greek folk music, super festive jug band music, Japanese kabuki, dark droning Indian ragas, recordings of Big Ben and traffic sounds in the UK and so much more. It's almost overwhelming. But not enough to keep us from wishing that there were ten more discs of this stuff! So absolutely recommended. And the packaging. WOW. Like we mentioned before, a clothbound hardcover book. In either red or white, with a Japanese style obi, packed with the above mentioned images, the liner notes and essay left for the final few pages, the cds, are uniquely held inside the front and back cover, in circular cut outs, beneath which lurk drawings of silverfish, the bane of all 78 collectors, as they eat up the sleeves!!

George and Yvonne Chen's first issue with a cd! Features interviews with Built to Spill, DEVO, Joan of Arc and Snuff, as well as reviews, comics, video game emulation and Asian cult restaurants. The CD's got exclusive unreleased tracks by Boyracer, Bunnygrunt, Cars Get Crushed, Cole, Danger G20, The Great Brain, June of 44, Kublai Khan, Lullaby for the Working Class, Lustre King, Raymond Brake, Retriever, Strictly Ballroom, Sweep the Leg Johnny, Transitional, Tullycraft and Vehicle Flips.

Time Examined is a monograph that documents Mika Vainio's scores for installation, film, theater, and performance, sounding very much like the work that Vainio has been releasing through Touch in recent years. As most folks probably already know, Vainio is half of the minimalist techno project Pan Sonic, but his solo work has become increasingly devoid of rhythm, with suspended tones, industrially-minded field recordings, prolonged electrical gasps, explorations into signal decay, and metallic echoes cast upon a black canvas of expansive nothingness. These installations within employ numerous visual cues - vintage clocks, old lightbulbs, transistor radios, vacuum tubes, Soviet-era electrical components, industrial films from the 1940s, and other ephemeral equipment from science laboratories from a past era. There had always been something elegantly retrograde about Vainio's electronic tinkerings with sound, and his installation work certainly reinforces this reading into his work. The accompanying 92 page book features tons of images from these installations, films, performances, and dance pieces with accompanying texts from CM von Hausswolff and Daniela Cascella. The first of the two cds features scores from over the past 15 years; and the second disc features the tone-plus-bleep split 1997 release Mikro Makro that Vainio produced alongside Carsten Nicolai (then recording just as Noto). A very nicely designed document!

Holy shit, is this long overdue, another incredible publication from the mighty Bazillion Points publishing house, this one, a long in the works compilation of the complete collection of the legendary Touch & Go punk zine, not the label, WAY before the label, there was this zine, an incredible collection of incendiary, funny as fuck, snotty and irreverent punk rockness. The work of Dave Stimson and Tesco Vee of the mighty Meatmen, Touch & Go set out to chronicle all of the happenings in the punk rock world, positive AND negative, never hesitating to call bullshit on any band or any record, but just as likely to heap crazy praise on sounds or folks so deserving. Most of us were too young to be reading T&G back in the day, during the zine's 4 year lifespan, 1979-1983, it was several years before we discovered punk rock, and over the years, we probably only ever saw one or two of the 22 published issues, and always wanted more. So for most of us, this our first chance to experience Touch & Go in its entirety. Classic old school layout, xeroxed in black and white, and hand assembled, covering all things punk rock all over the Midwest as well as in LA and New York and San Francisco and Boston and any other place kids were making a racket. So totally recommended. No self respecting music nerd / punk rocker / zine freak should be without one of these...

Issue #33 of this mag for, about and by gals is the DIY Special. It has features on M.I.A., Rilo Kiley, Deborah Harry, Office, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, as well as smaller bits on Gogol Bordello, Juliette Lewis, arts'n'crafts, fashion, and a heap of music reviews including one for Jenny Hoyston's new album Isle Of written by Jenny Hoyston herself.

A tome focused on the progressive metal music genre has been long overdue... perhaps in part due to the fact that the genre is so expansive and there are so many debatable definitions. Author Jeff Wagner (former editor for Metal Maniacs magazine) has taken the bull by the horns, focusing the spotlight on prog metal heavyweights Rush, Queensryche, Voivod, and Meshuggah - all very deservingly so - but we take a bit of issue with his grouping Dream Theater in with those true pioneers (yeah, we're going to catch some flak from DT fans for questioning their inclusion amongst those ranks, aren't we?!). Wagner presents the five bands as the standards by which pretty much all others covered in this book are held. Indeed, most of the other bands he features were inspired by one or more of those abovementioned innovators. Many nail 'the sound' very well, but break little new ground themselves. So we ponder, can they truly be permitted in the progressive metal arena? Hmmmm, 'tis something of a quandary when trying to define something which is supposed to be ever exploring, innovating and evolving. Nevertheless, if you are new to the genre (and would prefer to read a book than scour the internet to get yourself up to speed on the subject), this book is a terrific starting point... especially for the revisiting of the truly unique trailblazers Fates Warning, Thought Industry, and Celtic Frost. Particularly useful are the lists of recommendations in the back of the book to get any neophyte up to speed or to flesh out the collections of older fans. Man, we have the best customers, they play in kick ass bands, they put out killer zines, they run clubs, and cool bars, and are awesome writers, we're constantly impressed and amazed. One such customer is Jeremy Wallach, who (as it says on the back of his book) is a musician, anthropologist, ethnomusicologist and an assistant professor at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, and who has just published a book on popular music in Indonesia, which seemed like a total aQ appropriate book if there ever was one. We only just started it, but figured we oughta get it reviewed and listed so some of you folks could get your hands on it sooner rather than later (we're also reading the Anarcho-crust book reviewed elsewhere on this list!). Modern Noise Fluid Genres is a study, as mentioned above, of Indonesian popular music from the years 1997-2001, viewed through the exploration of recording studios, record stores, neighborhoods, universities, clubs and venues, with a focus on how access to global music has been a boon to creative music making, rather than a hindrance. It's definitely academic, plenty of cultural theory, but also plenty of anecdotes and interviews, visits to video shoots and classrooms, malls and campuses, and discussions with students and musicians, all with an eye on the globalization of music, and how specifically Indonesia fits into that trend. Includes tons of photos, drawings, lyrics, appendices, a glossary, and also a cd, which includes a handful of tracks demonstrating the various types and styles of modern Indonesian music. We're definitely digging it so far, and it seems like essential reading for folks who have been digging the Sublime Frequencies series, which is likely MOST of you!

Long awaited newest volume of Chris Ware's unmatchably beautiful comic. This issue is really large (11" x 18") so any mailorders for it will be shipped separate from any other items you may be ordering, and the shipping will be $4.00 (sorry).

I was completely crushed when I heard that Chris Ware had decided to end his Acme Novelty Company / Jimmy Corrigan comic series. A very very special and moving story by an astounding artist. At times, brutally heartwrenching, at others darkly humorous. Honestly this has brought tears to my eyes more than a few times. Completely redefining and elevating the form of the comic book. Ah, what could Mr. Ware do for a finale? Wrap the complete story up in a beautiful hardcover with a fold-out poster / dustjacket. Of course, sorely missing from this format are the added features and embellishments found in the individual comics such as the highly detailed and entertaining faux ads and extra stories. If you've not yet discovered the greatness of Chris Ware's Jimmy Corrigan, here's your chance to jump right in head first and experience it from beginning to end. So absolutely positively recommended.

Mark Wasserman is a San Francisco design maven who came up with a pretty cool idea that's basically the visual equivalent of a remix: he invited fellow graphic designers to apply their own style to the original files of existing projects, everything from posters and album covers to ads and book jackets. If it sounds like the end result would be a confusing mess, you're wrong. The book ends up being a simple, clever way to demonstrate the stylistic differences amongst designers; and such is the skill of the ones Wasserman admires that the resulting projects sort themselves out beautifully, with recurring themes in each design that harken back to the original. For example, a cute pink New Pornographers gig poster gets sexed up by one designer, and extra-digitized by another. In another example, the slick cover to "Solesides Greatest Bumps" gets reimagined as a toy truck ad by one design house, and gets visually "pissed on" by another. Each re-design comes with funny comments by the artist and cool insight into his or her aesthetic process. All in all, this is a great intro to the most interesting graphic designers today. If you're the sort of music-lover who's been known to buy a record because you loved the cover that much (come on, we've all done it), then this book will keep you happy.

SORRY. Wow! An extremely well-done new magazine for hip hop heads, rare grooves collectors, and just appreciators of fine culture everywhere. Highly recommended! Gorgeous looking, perfect-bound, printed on thick paper in full color and just BEAUTIFULLY designed. Not only that, but you get articles on Bobbito (super famous hip hop radio DJ), cult-fave book The Humument, AQ-fave hip hopper Scotty Hard (with great photos of all of his vintage recording gear), an interview with DJ Shadow and the Cut Chemist, a profile of David Axelrod, cult-fave drummer Idris Muhammad (with full color photos of his entire discography), Lootpack beatmaker Madlib, blaxploitation films, and some long overdue nice 'n' detailed instructions on how to make your own LP shelving for about $10 per cube (that holds 85 records apiece).

I love looking at color pictures of old LP covers. Doesn't even really matter if they're rad rare soul/funk/jazz gems. But if they are, so much the better. Wax Poetics magazine is definitely a good place to find articles illustrated with such cover pics. And lots of other cool photos too. And the reading is fine as well, if you're into old-school hip hop, '60s and '70s jazz-funk, today's hip underground producers, that sort of thing. This ish: The Meters, Lyn Collins (RIP), the Wu-Tang's Mathematics, Eric B. & Rakim, Sharon Jones, King Jammy, and lots more...including a run-down on some obscure "left field Americana" LPs, the story of the DJ who first rocked the Skull Snaps break, and a feature about South Bronx hip hop photographer Joe Conzo, illustrated with lots of his pics from back in the day.

You love music or you wouldn't be reading our list, and it's probably pretty likely that you love the records that music comes on, too. (Or used to, and still does, some of the time). Well then Wax Poetics is the magazine for you. Lots of in-depth reading here on subjects that could be of interest to anyone into DJ/vinyl culture, this issue featuring stuff on David Axelrod, Mulatu of Ethiopia, Danger Doom, Blowfly, Jazzy Jay, early '80s Bronx hip-hop club Disco Fever, '70s Brooklyn Afro-jazz organization the East, and lots more. And there's plenty of what we especially love: full-color reproductions of record covers to look at, all set to stoke the imagination of your ears. And although it says Hip-Hop, Jazz, Funk, & Soul on the cover, that doesn't stop 'em from, for instance, sneaking in a Charalambides album amidst considerations of reggae, rap, and soul/gospel classics.

SORRY. Another fine issue of this magazine for funk/jazz/hiphop/soul crate-diggers, both armchair and active... This ish features all sorts of stuff by/for/about musicians, producers, and djs: part 2 of WP's David Axelrod feature, interviews with DJ Cash Money, Skull Snaps, Bobbi Humhrey, and the Mizzell Brothers, and more. Including of course lots of photos and vintage album covers galore (which is the thing we love the most about this 'zine!!). Lots of lost gems are pictured and discussed, including a run down on a bunch of British avant jazz and Brazilian tropicalia treasures.

Bill Withers ("Ain't No Sunshine") is the cover star on this latest installment of Wax Poetics, the magazine of hip-hop, jazz, funk, & soul for those of us who appreciate all that good old music (and how it factors in to all the cool new stuff we're hearing). The art and design of how that music was packaged back in the day is also celebrated by Wax Poetics, with tons of vintage photos and album graphics reproduced. Besides the cover story on Bill Withers, stuff in this issue ranges from a colorfully-illustrated article about Blaxploitation cinema lobby cards to an interview with Cut Chemist to a look back at Herbie Mann's career to a really cool feature on "mom's record collection" -- a bunch of well known producers like Peanut Butter Wolf, Hank Shocklee, and Prince Paul, talking about the records they heard their mothers playing when they were kids! Always a good read, and visually appealing as well.

Another great ish of Wax Poetics, the magazine devoted to "hip-hop, jazz, funk, & soul" whose pages (138 this time) are stuffed with articles, reviews and interviews covering tons of badass and often obscure music. And of course there are loads of graphics and pictures, tons of photos and plenty of full-color album cover repros! This time, it's the "Hip-Hop Issue" (more than usual, that is), and it's got two different, random covers: one's got the late Jay Dee on it (to go with various rememberances found in the magazine), the other Public Enemy in their heyday ('cause there's an oral history of Hank Shocklee and the Bomb Squad production team inside). Lots more of course...we should just mention that there's an article about Bay Area hip-hop history wherein you'll find out just what "hyphy" is if you didn't already know.

Just when you thought that an issue of this magazine of hip-hop, jazz, funk & soul, couldn't get any better than the last one, the drop this Special Parliament-Funkadelic Issue on us! Pages and pages of individual articles/interviews devoted to the various funkanauts who've manned the Mothership, from George Clinton to Bernie Worrell to Gary Shider to Bootsy Collins to Billy "Bass" Nelson to felt-tip warrior, LP cover artist Pedro Bell... Wax Poetics is known for lots of colorful vintage album graphics and cool photography, so of course there's plenty of amazing images from the P-funk realm for them to incorporate here! Our favorite magazine of hip-hop, jazz, funk and soul both old and (sometimes) new is back with another great issue. "Boogaloo Bad Boy" Joe Bataan makes the cover. There's articles on early drum machines, the albums of Richard Pryor, Baltimore club music, and DJ Food's favorite cut-and-paste albums...among much much more. As always, a pleasure to look at as well as read.
