Still it's a good sign of what we hope might be the Wire's newly expanded coverage of metal, which has been creeping up and up anyway.

But, for what it's worth, this month's installment of this essential British magazine of "adventures in modern music" features a nasty-looking Mark Stewart (of crucial post punkers The Pop Group) on the cover, along with AQ fave drone-jazzers The Necks, trumpeter Bill Dixon, .snd (taking the Invisible Jukebox test), 'aquacrunk' artist Rustie, (another) trumpeter Franz Hautzinger, a Cecil Taylor epiphany, and lots more...
THE magazine for the adventurous, and eclectic, music lover. This time, Tricky's on the cover (sporting some sparkly eyeshadow) and inside this 98 page issue there's everything from the noise of Sick Llamas and the Fag Tapes label to the psych folk of Maher Shalal Hash Baz's Reiko Kudo to the heavy dronedoom of Asva... all stuff AQ customers should be interested to read about. And plenty more, including a primer on digital dancehall, and an "Invisible Jukebox" session with free jazz saxophonist Joe McPhee. Plus the usual columns, charts, news, scene reports, color photos, and reviews reviews reviews. As always, pretty much essential.
The Wire gets political as "audio activists" Ultra-red make the cover this time. Elsewhere in this latest issue of the indispensable British magazine covering all kinds of new (and old) music (jazz, electronic, dub, improv, noise, avant-rock, techno, world, psych, etc.), you'll meet wax cylinder collector Alex Kolkowski, dubstep duo Dusk & Blackdown, ethno-experimentalist Ghedalia Tazartes, and others. There's also Tom Recchion's "epiphany" over Eno's Obscure label, our pal Sami Sanpakkila of Fonal Records talking about his favorite album cover, the usual tons of reviews to check out, and, last but not least, an "Invisible Jukebox" test taken by not one, but two infamous indie rock outsiders: Daniel Johnston and Jad Fair!
First off, clever cover design this time 'round! A DIY lookin' b&w xeroxed array of cassette tape spines. It's in the spirit of this issue's special 14 page guide to music's "Unofficial Channels" - mixtapes, bootlegs, mp3 blogs, pirate radio and so forth. This special section includes an article by Edwin Pouncey about "Black Metal's unholy cassette rituals", talking about the likes of Dead Reptile Shrine! Amongst other interesting angles on the subject...

One particularly interesting piece on a series of experimental BBC radio documentaries done in '50 and '60s by a couple of folk singers.

Any magazine that puts the names of both Pierre Henry and Ramleh on the cover is all right with us. Which of course this long-running must-read music magazine from the UK is, obviously, since we happily sell a big stack of 'em ever month.
