'70s folk legend Tim Buckley gets the tribute treatment at the hands of Mojave 3, Mark Lanegan, Tram, Dot Allison, Mike Johnson, Brendan Perry, Lilys, and a bunch of others, filling up two discs with their Buckley-love.

We've ALWAYS loved Guided By Voices. And say what you will about the hundreds, perhaps thousands of GBV songs, but on average, it's WAY more hit than miss, with many GBV records consisting of pretty much NOTHING BUT hits, like Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes. We'd actually been re-obsessing over GBV lately when whattayaknow, in honor of this year's Record Store Day came this GBV tribute compilation. We've very skeptical of tributes, one famous band signs on and then the label fills out the record with a bunch of never-heard-of's most of which are never-really-wanted-to-hear's in the first place. And no band seems to have suffered that indignity more than GBV, with so many terrible terrible tributes. So hopes were not high for this one, until we saw some of the bands: Flaming Lips, Thurston Moore, Kelly Deal of the Breeders, Superdrag, Crooked Fingers, David Kilgour, Blitzen Trapper, Lou Barlow, Cymbals Eat Guitars, and more! And almost all of the tracks here are great, lots of them dramatically different reinterpretations, none more so that La Sera's divine version of "Watch me Jumpstart", which transforms the original into a hazy, washed out, organ drenched, half speed, girl group ballad, lush vocal harmonies, the whole thing driven by a warm whirring church organ, everything wreathed in soft focus reverb, the drums minimal but strangely powerful, the chorus a druggy crawl. So good. EASILY worth the price of admission for just that one track. But the Flaming Lips version o "Smothered In Hugs" is pretty great, as is Elf Power's "man Called Aerodynamics", and Thurston Moore's dirgey noise rock take on "Stabbing A Star", and Crooked Fingers' mostly true-to-the-original "Tractor Rape Chain", and even the uknown new-to-us outfits here step up and do GBV proud. This was a super limited Record Store Day release, and we only have a handful left, so grab one fast before they're gone. The home silkscreened sleeves make this 10" Siltbreeze sampler seem like it could have been just some old record discovered in a beat up cardboard box in the corner of some musty warehouse, the ink a little smeary, the sleeves a little rough around the edges, hand stamped, simple black on black skull cover, but have a peep at some of the names, Sic Alps, Kurt Vile, Dan Melchior... as well as some new to us outfits like Chickins, Tommy Jay Band and of course Puffy Areolas. This is primo Siltbreeze lo-fi garage rock / sludge pop / whatever, from the super distorted garage murk of Dan Melchior, to the reverby stomp of Chickins, to the super distorted atonal stumbling groove of the Tommy Jay Band, to the surprisingly catchy lo-fi power pop of the Puffy Areolas, to the dreamy bedroom folk strum of Sic Alps, to the big classic rock via druggy garage pop blowout of Kurt Vile and his Violators, we're digging ALL of this. Big time. What we're NOT digging though is the price, oof, but what can you do? It's probably crazy limited, 300 copies we think, we got all we could and that's not that many, plus they seem to have all been hand screened and stamped, and hell, the songs are pretty bad ass, and they're are all exclusive tracks as far as we can tell, so your call, for some folks, $25 won't be that steep a price to pay for these jams, and considering how fast these have been selling, you might not have to worry about that for long anyway...

This is the first in a series of Bureau B releases, designed to shine a spotlight on the kinds of music the label specialize in, a sort of reissue sampler, highlighting tracks from various reissues on Bureau B. On each compilation, a modern musician curates a collection highlighting some of their favorites, and for the inaugural installment, the choice of Tim Gane from Stereolab seems like a no brainer, since Stereolab essentially trafficked in unabashed krautrock (especially Neu!) worship, thus, for Kollektion 1, Gane digs deep into the archives of legendary seventies krautrock label Sky Records, just check out the artists: Hans Joachim Roedelius, Moebius, Cluster, Gunter Schickert, Eno, Michael Rother, Beerbohm, Asmus Tietchens, Riechmann, it definitely has aQuarius written all over it. And the song selection is pretty ace too, there's the woozy, melancholic pulsating space music of Asmus Tietchens' opening track, the motorik guitar-groove of Michael Rother's "Feuerland", Eno's oozing psychedelic kraut-pop epic "The Belldog", Moebius' jaunty and playful "Conditionierer", the hushed kraut folk of Schickert's "In Der Zeit", a skeletal ballad wreathed in birdsong, Roedelius' swirling prismatic synths cape "Geradewohl", Riechmann's "Himmelblau" a soaring kosmische kraut symphony, and on and on and on. Every track here a gem, and in some ways, a pretty perfect krautrock primer. Can't wait for future installments, with the next few curated by Lloyd Cole, Richard Fearless from Death In Vegas and Holger Hiller. Includes notes on each artists, as well as liner notes by Asmus Tietchens. On a single cd, or split between two volumes on vinyl.

We have so man fond indie rock memories from the '90s. So many labels that came to birth and put out the 7"s that got us through many a summer and school year. The Pacific Northwest in particular always had a crazy amount of indie labels taking their cues from Sub-Pop and forging ahead with a love of all things indie, putting so much love and care into their releases and sharing the sounds of some bands that would later become much more well known. Suicide Squeeze is one of these labels. Starting out primarily as a 7" label, they have expanded over the years and are now a pretty serious label. Celebrating their 10th birthday they've released a 2-disc collection of previously released songs as well as some unreleased tracks. Modest Mouse, Elliott Smith, Iron & Wine, Of Montreal, Hella, The Black Heart Procession, The Unicorns, 764-Hero, The Aislers Set, Black Mountain, Les Savy Fav, The Melvins, Red Stars Theory, and that's only like half the bands included. This is pretty much essential for those wanting a crash course in indie rock over the last ten years or those who might have taken a little break from indie rock. A pretty great way to relive a decade of indie rock's best and brightest.

From the same label that brought us the latest from Tarentel mainman Jefre Cantu-Ledesma and the collected works of The Alps (both reviewed elsewhere on this list) comes this compilation called Small Melodies. And that is precisely what this is, each artist was asked to contribute a piece of music which represented their interpretation of small melodies, given simple guidelines such as "warm" and "calm" and the results are absolutely lovely. Exactly what you might imagine a record of warm, calm, small melodies might sound like. Each artist offers his own particular sound, but they all work surprisingly well together as a whole, a bit like a more varied Pop Ambient compilation, or how you might imagine a Morr Music Pop Ambient record would sound. Lots of familiar faces, Oren Ambarchi, Ultra Milkmaids, Stephan Mathieu, Taylor Deupree, Sogar, Tape, but even more unfamiliar ones: Naph, Aen, Mondii, RdL, Fenton... Glistening expanses of digital glitch and sparkling drift, fuzzy muted melodies buried under thick swirls of dreamlike fuzz, blissed out post rock splintered into drifting shards of soft focus melody, ultra abstract field recordings wrapped in barely there drones, digital abstractions smeared into warm bleary blurs, thick swells of sound like distant bells wrapped in thick sheets of reverb, pretty pop pulled under a slowly spreading swirl of otherworldly thrum, wheezing accordions and intricate steel string fingerpicking tangled up in strange alien bleep and buzz, every track is the perfect soundtrack to a dream, the whole record an all night drift through a warm and calm world of small melodies. Packaged in a cool, sleek oversized digipak style folder, with striking silver foil printing on white matte background.

It's really good!

Smalltown Supersound is a Norwegian label that defines itself by the artists on the label and not through a unifying aesthetic; yet, they've decided to release a sampler of all of their artists, from the minimalistic and pulsing sounds of Elektro Nova/Electro Nova, to the melancholic beauty of Continental Fruit, to the abstract electronics of Lasse Marhaug, to Jazzkammer's glitch electronica, to Kim Hiorthoy's wonderful and warm mixture of the organic and the electronic, and to the slow, beautiful and hypnotic sound of Monopot. ----* ----* Nonesuch Explorer Titles! : ----*

What better way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of your record label? Well if you you're Shrimper, home to the Mountain Goats, Sentridoh, Amps For Christ, Dump, Herman Dune, Refrigerator, Woods and loads more, you get some of those bands, and about 35 more, and you have them all cover songs by arguably your least popular artist, WCKR SPGT! Make sense? Of course it doesn't, but that's not the point. The real point is that WCKR SPGT were, and are awesome, and have been Shrimper mainstays since day one, so they wrote 36 brand new songs, sent them to all their friends, and had said friends record them however they wanted, and this is the result, a gloriously sprawling tribute to the last 20 years of low fidelity sound making, late night tape dubbing, and the power of DIY. Some of the names here will definitely be familiar, Sentridoh, The Mountain Goats, Refrigerator, Breathlizor, Primordial Undermind, The Ah Club, Amps For Christ, Simon Joyner, Jad Fair, Soul-Junk, and those songs are indeed awesome, but so are any and all of the other 27 jams. But yeah, the Sentridoh track, nicely titled "Smooth Sounds For Your Fucking Face", sounds like it could have been pulled off a cassette from the nineties, lyrics and all, Soul-Junk's WCKR SPGT is all chaotic noise rock, laced with clouds of electronic noise and crumbling distortion, super lo-fi (of course), completely ramshackle, and wicked catchy, the Mountain Goats track is all acoustic guitar and vocals (again of course), but here augmented by cool tremolo guitar, some lush harmonies, not at all the lo-fi boombox howling of old, Refrigerator sounds like Refrigerator, those sad man vocals over trash can drums, detuned guitars, all wrapped in a cloud of tape hiss, with what almost sounds like cello (!), Jad Fair offers some rambling wisdom, over chicken scratch guitars, and a thumping looped rhythm, Amps for Christ transforms WCKR SPGT into twisted and warped electro-Jesus-folk, Breathilizor are as dumb and genius as always, spewing ridiculous lyrics over classic metal riffage, and on and on and on and on... Some of our new favorites are Peephole Circus, sound like an extra lo-fi take on nineties math/noise rock, their WCKR track crazy catchy, Alan Smithee's woozy jangly drone pop, which is slowly overtaken by strange pulsing electronics, and faux strings, a seriously twisted hybrid that sounds awesome, Golden Boots whose track sounds like it could be the intro music to Mystery Science Theater 3000, with it's strange processed vox, and sing songy melody, Kukunuku's warbly creepy garbled mumbledrone dreaminess, sounding a bit like Ween, the Uncalled For with their fuzzy garage rock stomp... This all just reminds us that Shrimper, and all the bands that sail with her, still rule, as much as when we were ordering $2 tapes through the mail in the early nineties. The cd features funny liner notes from Shrimper rockstar Franklin Bruno, and a super swank textured paper insert, the tape offers an appropriately more lo-fi and liner noteless version, and if the above raving didn't already spell it out for you, SUPER RECOMMENDED.

The latest compilation from Arthur Magazine's Bastet imprint wears that magazines politics on its sleeve on this collection of obvious and not so obvious protest songs. A lot of familiar names on this one -- Devendra Banhart, Feathers, Diane Cluck, Pajo, Josephine Foster and Matt Valentine. While the less obvious protest songs including Meg Baird's sublime "Western Red Lily" will probably resonate longer over time, there is something extremely exhilarating about the urgency of songs such as Charlie Nothing's "Fuck You and Your Stupid Wars", and Andrew Bar's "Don't Trust That Man". Play this often and loud!

No doubt we've loved so much of what Italians Do It Better has released recently, in so many ways they really helped reignite the love of dance music in indie culture. With different shades of smoky, slow burning spaced out disco, techno and house music, their roster really reads like an exciting list of some of our favorite synth heavy late night dance floor favorites. Solid Gold is a collection of tracks from 12" singles IDIB have released over the last few years by folks like Invisible Conga People, T&K, Bottin, Twisted Wires, and even Beyonce's sister Solange. We dig this collection so much because as much as we like so much of the Johnny Jewel fueled sounds that have come from the Italians Do It Better camp (Glass Candy, Chromatics, Desire), it's nice to hear a set of songs that have a bit of a different angle and perspective to dance music, than just one group/guy's vision. From total spaced out ravers to cold and thrilling chillers we've been listening to this loud and nonstop ever since it came in to the shop. We even noticed that folks who are usually a bit dance music shy are getting way into this as there are so many awesome prog and psyched out synth moments on this record. Much like their last compilation After Dark, Italians Do It Better have once again provided us with a seamless compilation that flows so perfectly from start to finish and is making us move in the most sensual and satisfying ways. So smoking!

We always like to have a good '60s/'70s psych-pop compilation to recommend, when we can. Happily enough, this list we do, it's Some Songs Stuck In My Mind, an international comp of utterly killer tracks from rare 45s by 18 different, totally obscure artists that we'll go ahead and list here for the hell of it, so you can feel all collector-music-nerd-snobby if you've heard of any of 'em before: Springwell, Manolo Y Ramon, Don Curtis, The Comforts, Michael, T.M.L., Eduardo Araujo, Bluebeard, Antonio Carlos & Jocafi, Serge Et Christine, La Metamorphosi, Adriano Celentano, Puzzle, Little Sammy Gaha, Francois De Louville, Les Playboys, Vincent, and Injun Joe. All of it wonderfully groovy, fuzzy, catchy and funkily far out. If this were a DJ set spun in a bar 'round here, there would be a either a stompin' dancefloor and/or a bunch of bearded guys bugging the DJ about what they were playing as each track came on. The cd booklet's got liner notes talking 'bout each track, and lil' full-color pics of the cover art from the original singles. Recommended, in the tradition of Neurotic Reactions (from the same label), Andergraun Vibrations, Cherrystones Hidden Charms, Who Will Buy These Wonderful Evils, Nightmares At Toby's Shop, all those cool Psychic Circle comps, etc.

Got a few copies of this cd-r compilation via our pals the Oakland band Pigs, who have a track on it taken from their album Illuminati House Party, that we know a lot of you liked. Other acts also on here, and equally AQ-approved: US Christmas, Shit And Shine, Sons Of Tonatiuh, and a bunch more (13 in all) that are all pretty great. Although it's a diverse selection of bands, somehow the tracks that appear on this comp all go pretty well together. There's a tilt towards mathiness and heaviness, and also to weirdness and psychedelia, all good things as far as we're concerned. Lots of it is instrumental, as well. We won't bother to describe the entire disc track-by-track (especially since it's cheap enough, just buy it!!) but will mention a few things that stood out... Shane Perlowin from prog-punk outfit Ahleuchatistas starts things off with a lovely bit of solo guitar action, vaguely exotic-sounding, something that Six Organs fans should enjoy, though the hypnotically jittery track by Ahleuchatistas proper that pops up later on the disc is more in line with the technically complex, frantic rockin' we've heard from 'em before on their Cuneiform albums. Meanwhile, Russian (???) band The Grand Astoria do a pretty rad space-rockin' cover of a song by Ash Ra Tempel. And then there's the oddly monickered yellowthief (a grindy duo consisting of drummer "yellowsun" and guitarist "yellowmoon") who contribute six tracks, all but one of 'em short sharp shocks of mathy spazz (and some moody melody) barely longer than 30 seconds apiece, with gibberish song titles. Ruins and Hella fans ought to dig, and we'll definitely be on the lookout for more from yellowthief in future. Oh, and Pigs, if you haven't heard 'em yet, do their song "Lurch" which is exemplary of their Sabbathy, Melvinsy sound. The heaviest stuff here is probably by Sons Of Tonatiuh, though, who get two feedback-laden tracks to kick out the ugly doom jams, Eyehategod style. Shit And Shine don't wimp out, either, wrapping the disc up with a crushingly distorted atmospheric soundscape of sorts. And the other bands we haven't yet mentioned (The Wayward, The Asound, Akris, Enoch, Yuugen Syndrome) are all worthy too. Certainly a cool comp that turned us on to some neat stuff we hadn't heard before, from denizens of a particular (and somewhat peculiar) underground scene that we hadn't quite conceptualized previously, though now it makes sense that these bands would all belong together on this comp - to the extent that you could almost listen to this and pretend it was ALL by the same, really amazing band! Comes with a sticker, too, by the way.

When you think of the Constellation record label, the first thing that springs to mind is probably Godspeed! You Black Emperor, and the second thing that pops up is probably some other Godspeed! You Black Emperor related or likeminded majestic, soundscape-y project, and the third... well, you get the picture. This new compilation from the Montreal label does much to break that GYBE-centric identity. It's a remarkably diverse selection of rare and unreleased material from their complete roster of remarkably diverse of artists -- Fly Pan Am, Polmo Polpo, Do Make Say Think, Sackville, Exhaust, Hangedup, 1 Speed Bike, Silver Mt. Zion, Black Ox Orkestar, Re:, Frankie Sparo, Sofa, Elizabeth Anka Vajagic and yes, Godspeed! You Black Emperor. That said if you are a GYBE devotee, you'll find much to pleasingly challenge your eardrums. I kept checking to see what was playing when we had this on in the store, especially when one particularily heavy, noisy track came on...lots of surprises in other words!

Remember that scene-stealing, nunchaku-wielding lunatic in the movie Ghost World? What a fuckin' awesome character! Well, he left such an impression/scar on some folks that there's now a compilation of songs about him. Very slacker irony and hesher silliness packed. Kinda like the soundtrack to the Canadian indie film FUBAR with its indie rockers donning the hair metal / bad rock schtick, but quite not as hot shit... actually some of this is pretty goofy in a bad way and some is just plain gawdawful. If I were Stewart, I'd wanna serve these folks up a platter of greasy headbutts. Approach with caution or don't approach it at all, except Rob Crow completists, you'll have to buy this. Also features Black Heart Procession (in a very uncharacteristic turn), Furious Four, Chris Prescott, Danger Zone, Mike Lenart, and Gar Wood.

SORRY. It could be the product of a genetic disaster, alien abduction, drug excess, the lack of proper medication, or nothing easily quantifiable. Regardless of the cause, outsider art is dominated by a artistic compulsion / obsession so strong as to defy any lack of training or ability or good sense. Irwin Chusid's compilation "Songs In The Key Of Z" is a absurdist journey into the obtuse songwriting from The Shaggs, Daniel Johnston, Wesley Willis, Joe Meek (whose legendary tone-deafness couldn't be more self-evident as on the demo to "Telstar"), Captain Beefheart, Shooby Taylor, The Legendary Stardust Cowboy, Tiny Tim, Luie Luie, Congress-Woman Malinda Jackson, the ever lovable Jandek, and many more. We're working on getting the book itself too.

Here's a fine way to get acquainted with SF label Expel Records who put out the lovely Brookhaven album. If you've had a chance to hear and enjoy that record or if you're a fan of such mellow groups like The Album Leaf, Tristeza or Languis, you're certain to enjoy this compilation featuring a couple nice tracks from Brookhaven as well as Telefecteau, Roche, Clay Payton, Ecru, and Hinokuma. They all fall somewhere on a spectrum of minimal electronics blended with more traditional indie-type elements (guitars, live drums). Funky sampled beats and cold, beautiful synth washes, little lo-fi keyboard bedroom recordings-like and more polished productions all find their way into this collection, hopefully signalling more full lengths on the way from Expel artists. Quite nice!

NOW AVAILABLE ON GATEFOLD VINYL, WITH A BONUS TRACK!! So we've actually already had quite a few amazing compilations of '60s and '70s popular music from Thailand, including a whole bunch of discs from the infallible Sublime Frequencies label (Thai Pop Spectacular, Siamese Soul, Molam: Thai Country Groove, Shadow Music Of Thailand, etc., etc.), and also the Subliminal Sounds label's Thai Beat A-Go-Go series, but we were still super excited when we heard about the upcoming release of this new comp of vintage Thai tunes, 'cause it's been put together by Soundway, the UK-based label that also seemingly can do no wrong when it comes to international crate diggin'. Soundway is responsible for all those Nigeria Special comps, and the Ghana Soundz ones too, among other fine collections and reissues, most focused on music from Africa or Latin America. This is their first venture into Southeast Asia, as far as we know, and boy did they do the job well! A more lively, colorful comp could hardly be imagined. The compilers, who have spent hours and days on the ground in Thailand searching out vintage vinyl, know their stuff (their DJ night, "Bangkok Paradise", must be a blast). Nineteen tracks, 66 minutes of music, ranging from yearning love songs to super groovy funk, all of it quite undeniably 'exotic' to our ears, so that even with Western psych and pop influences, incorporating surprise rock riffs, synths, and brass sections, it's most definitely music from Thailand, utilizing Thai folk traditions, sung in the Thai language, though some of it also reminds us of Bollywood stuff (which makes sense), or possibly the Ethiopiques series as well (a less likely connection there). We recognize a few of the artists' names from those other abovementioned comps, though they seem aware of what's been comped already and we're assured that most of the tracks here have never been released outside of Thailand before. The subtitle doesn't say "leftfield" for nothing, this probably isn't the most typical mainstream Thai pop from the period, more like the hippest and freakiest, though often from quite popular artists, many revered to this day. Soundway treat us to some wonderfully eccentric picks, gems like Waipod Phetsuphan's "Ding Ding Dong", a song inspired by a dumb 1971 Italian sex comedy about prehistoric cavemen (and cavewomen) that was inexplicably a hit film in Thailand. And the spaced out lounge-jazz of The Viking Combo band's "Pleng Yuk Owakard" must be mentioned. Mindblowing. Walking bass, spooked out electric organ, maniacal vocals, loud shuddery chords, sudden percussion, woah it's a weird one, almost disturbing. Whichever DJ/collector first dug that one up must have been stoked. So much good stuff here, our point is, the treasures of vintage Thai pop are plentiful enough to require this comp, those that came before, and hopefully many more to come. You gotta be thankful when you think about it, without the efforts of labels like Sublime Frequencies, and Soundway, etc., we'd be missing out on so much incredible music that we now listen to on a daily basis, whether it be from Thailand or Nigeria or wherever.

SORRY. Cool Philadelphia space-rock compilation with: Transient Waves, Azusa Plane, Aspera Adastra, Photon Band, Bent Leg Fatima, Asteroid #4 and more. Although Philadelphians Bardo Pond are not included here, fans of that band (and My Bloddy Valentine) will be happy with this cd, full of wall-of-sound layers and buried melodies.

We had to do it. How could this NOT be an aQ Record Of The Week? Some folks will no doubt cry foul, and accuse us of arty pretension, but nothing could be further from the truth. Sure we love lots of strange stuff, and we love difficult listening, and challenging, arty sonic WTF weirdness, and have been known to champion some seriously bizarre records and groups, but we do love all that stuff. Like we love jangly pop, and buzzy black metal, we also love field recordings of abandoned buildings, we love the sound of record crackle, tape hiss, we love industrial sounds, the whir of heating units, the thrum of traffic bleeding through the walls, we love the drone found in everyday life, the music hidden in the most unmusical of places. In fact, it's almost become a running joke around here, we'll be somewhere, and some piece of machinery will be buzzing or humming, or some construction site will be emitting a strangely rhythmic crunch, and our first thought it often "We could definitely sell a bunch of these at aQ!" And after all these years, we know you're right there with us. Buying recordings of hospital rooms and life support machines, recordings of mating deer and drag races, records made entirely from runout grooves, we could go on and on, but c'mon, you love that stuff as much as we do. Which brings us to Sounds Of Silence, which as the title suggests, is in fact a collection of the most famous musical silences! That's right, a silent record. Or at least mostly, bear with us. We've had other 'silent' records at aQ before, from the not-so-silent Blank Tapes, which found Argentinean weirdos Reynols constructing a whole record from recordings of, yes, blank tapes, that disc a fantastic sonic landscape of hiss and hum, subtly textural and weirdly mesmerizing, to (in the used bin once), a purported compilation of Billy Joel's "Greatest Hits", which was in fact a recording with no sound at all, an obvious artprank jab at the ubiquitous piano man. Hell, we even poked fun at ourselves by listing a cd that didn't even exist on our April Fools list a while back, waxing poetic about the 'nothingness' and the 'void' and the concept behind the lack of actual music, we even made a mock up with an empty jewel case, that spent a good long while on the employee favorites shelf in the store. But the thing is, we do love silence, or at least, the attempt to capture silence, in a world, where true silence doesn't actually exist. From barely there recordings by Francisco Lopez and Bernard Gunter, to field recordings of industrial spaces, it's not so much about the silence, as what surrounds it, and what threatens to destroy it. So yeah, maybe you'd have to be a pretty big music dork to want to pay thirty bucks for a silent record, but then, we're all pretty big music dorks after all. C'mon, check out the lineup! Andy Warhol, Ciccone Youth, Sly & The Family Stone, Robert Wyatt, Afrika Bambatta & Family, Orbital, John Lennon & Yoko Ono, Crass, Whitehouse, The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, Soulfly, John Denver, The Count Backwards and lots more. Maybe the most unlikely lineup on a compilation ever. Who knows if this is some super provocative art-prank, or a lovingly curated collection of experimental sound, or heck, a little of both, it's pretty goddamn fascinating, and weird, and cool, fans of lowercase sound will find much to dig, lots of crackle and hiss, of course even beyond the original recordings, depending in your method of playback, each person's listening experience will be different, more noise and hiss and hum and crackle and pop, you could even scratch the shit out if it before you play it and truly individualize it, Christian Marclay style! But the sounds themselves are surprisingly varied, those that come from digital sources, are truly nearly silent, while others are actually not so silent, and still others, don't even exist at all, their length listed as 0'0'', presented here as they were when they were originally 'released', the original intention unclear, high concept, political statement, who knows, but tracks like Sly & The Family Stone's "There's A Riot Goin' On", which was mentioned on the album cover, but was then conspicuously absent from the actual lp, or Andy Warhol's "Silence (Copyright 1932)", which was supposedly created by Warhol when he was 4 years old, or the Afrika Bambatta track "Beware (The Funk Is Everywhere) (Silent Version)", which was originally presented as a "Radical Mix". But fear not, Sounds Of Silence, is not all high concept, there are actual tracks, well, actual sort of silent tracks, it seems a little pointless to describe each one, since, they are all essentially 'silent', and they ARE, both sides, track after track of barely there thrum, fields of crackle, the occasional pop, most of that we're guessing from OUR turntable, but close listening reveals much of the source, some tracks have barely there sounds, whether it's the sound of the room, or the vinyl from which it was mastered, or who knows, maybe we're just hearing what we want to. Maybe there is nothing but silence. A long time ago, we at aQ dreamed of a record made entirely of vinyl lp crackle, which led sound artist Loren Chasse to do just that (sort of, he simulated it with field recordings of surf and rain actually), so in a way, if you remove the high concept angle, Sounds Of Silence, is kind of like that, like maybe a more minimal version of our long dreamed of record crackle record. Either way, you know if this is your cup of tea or if you think it's a total crock of shit. If you've read this far, we're guessing you're in the first camp, but really either way, we LOVE this. It's brilliant, hilarious, confusional, baffling, there are extensive liner notes too, track by track discussing where each one came from, why each one is important, the concept behind them, there's even an essay on silence, it's of course fantastically packaged, and totally over the top. Well, as 'over the top' as a silent record can be. Recommended for music nerds, weirdo sonic obsessives and anyone who would dig having such a ridiculous record in your collection. Don't believe us? SORRY. This collection of stumbling lo-fi experiments from Athens, GA, resembles the between-song noodling of the Olivia Tremor Control, who appear in their Black Swan Network guise along side The Japancakes, Melted Men, and a handful of pseudo-Elephant 6'ers smugly scratching their beards over the monumental artistic force it takes to twiddle a knob for five minutes.

Very good, surprisingly consistent collection of accessible spacey rock, sometimes synth-heavy, sometimes wonderfully My Bloody Valentine-ish, from the likes of Flowchart, Lenola (members of Bugskull), Photon Band, and the well-named, Bitch Magnet-influenced Dagobah System. You may not have heard of the bands but this comp is good. Recommended.

Rarely does an indie rock comp hold well together sonically, but this fine record is one of the few exceptions, with its laidback sonic landscapes mixed with intimate bedroom recordings -- a hallmark of the Temporary Residence label sound. And "Sounds of the Geographically Challenged" even has a cool concept -- all the participating artists have members living in 2 or 3 separate cities, all rather cutely listed in the liner notes. Ranges from the bleak electronic work from Continental OP (perhaps the only recording of this duo featuring David Pajo and Will Oldham), to The Halifax Pier's southern theatricality, and Nero's muscular math-rock. Windsor For The Derby's slide guitar hypno-rock is a major highlight, as is the entry by Sonoroa Pine (ex-Rodan and June of 44 peoples), and the rollicking Songs:Ohia track is one of the best we've ever heard from him. Also making appearances: Retsin, Liquorice, Hz Roundtable, drona parva, Fuck, Wino, The For Carnation, Haelah, and Ruby Falls. All songs except the Fuck one are exclusive! "Sounds of the Geographically Challenged" was intended to be a four part series of limited 12"s, but delays and natural disasters kept the project from being completed with only 3 of the 4 singles seeing the light of day. Although the vinyl versions sold out long ago and now fetch high bids on eBay, the fine folks at Temporary Residence have compiled onto CD all of the tracks from the series -- including the final unreleased 12". It's been a long time coming, but it's certainly well worth the wait.

Everyone knows we at aQuarius love us some comps. That much should be clear on pretty much any list, and lately we've gotten some interesting compilations that place a new and different emphasis on things instead of merely throwing together a bunch of great tracks from whatever genre. The ones that stand out the clearest are the recent Dirty Water albums, which include artists who aren't necessarily "punk" in the '77 studded leather jacket way, but undoubtedly punk as fuck in their iconoclastic assault on the status quo. That's why you'll find Albert Ayler next to Captain Beefheart and Mott the Hoople, artists that inspired the great big giant fuck you to society that we all know and love. With Spacelines, we have a particularly intriguing batch of tunes put together by none other than Sonic Boom himself, and anyone in love with Spacemen 3, Spectrum, or Spiritualized (sorry Sonic!) will most likely dig this shit BIG TIME. It all makes perfect sense and while it's a bummer that there is no information about anybody here, they are for the most part familiar enough that you should already know what they're about or not have any trouble finding all the relevant info. Instead, this comp is a bit like hanging out and burning one down with your ol' buddy Sonic Boom. The album kicks off with the Staples Singers' "This May Be The Last Time", the obvious roots for the Stones song and a clear influence on the Spacemen 3, sounding a lot like their rendition of "May The Circle Be Unbroken". Bo Diddley is next with "You Don't Care", a classic albeit stripped to the bare bones example of the man's trademark rhythm, its minimal approach clearly a huge influence on a band like Spacemen 3. "Transparent Radiation", which we described as perhaps one of Spacemen 3's finest moments, is presented here by its authors the Red Crayola in a super bare demo form. It's funny hearing Mayo Thompson singing with a sort of fey vocal and laughing from time to time. There are also contributions from Washington Phillips and Jessie Mae Hemphill, who should be familiar to many of you from recent Mississippi Records titles. Other highlights include "Can't Let Go" by Evie Sands (the melody of which was utilized with completely stellar results in Spectrum's "How You Satisfy Me"), Juicy Lucy with their swampy original version of "Just One Time" covered by Spacemen 3 as "Mary Anne", Daniel Johnston, MC5, and northwest garage legends the Wailers. At 23 songs on a single cd, this one may be perfect for those who might have had difficulty gulping down the massive double disc Dirty Water sets. All in all, a seriously kick ass collection, one that proves how many of the greatest bands are perhaps, more than anything else, great interpreters.

Here's a disc we'd definitely recommend to those of you who love exploring the realms of hitherto unknown (we'd assume, pretty much) '60s and early '70s garage/psych bands from overseas. In this case, from Spain, which seems to be the land of hot reissue action lately. 23 tracks in total taken from rare 45s, ranging from poppy psych to heavy-duty hard rockers. There's lots of wild, fuzzed-out groovers here! Including the stompin', super-distorted but also totally bubblegum rockin' of Cafe Con Leche, whose "Land of Light" sounds like the Jackson Five run through a giant fuzz pedal. Other faves include the off-the-rails Deep Purplish bludgeon of Storm, Los Roller's Creamier-than-thou Spanish-language "Camino Cortado", and the raucous psychedelic R&B belted out by Clock, among others. Si senor, plenty to dig on this comp for sure. The booklet includes band photos, sleeve shots, and liner notes in both English and Spanish.

Like prog? Like psych? Well hey, check it out, the bands on this comp are all what the compilers consider to be "prog/psych", a hybrid that flourished circa '69-'72 as the psychedelic sixties transitioned into the progressive rock era of the seventies. Give a listen and you'll see what they mean, even if such musical taxonomy is a generally vague pursuit. The deal there is that even though prog is known as an album-oriented genre, that didn't stop bands who hoped to make the Top of the Pops from cutting some killer singles, obscure though they may be (fortunately each track is annotated in the cd booklet with a few tidbits of information). The bands, all from the UK, include: The Rats, Rescue No.1, Triconderoga, Eire Apparent, Rumplestiltskin, The Imposters, Glass Managerie, The Open Mind, Nancy, The Montanas, Raw Material, Opus (who do a dead-on rip-off of Led Zep), Putney Bridge, The Fruit Machine, Andromeda, Rumble, Rare Bird, and Walrus. Many of 'em we've never heard of before, though we certainly do remember the Triconderoga track ("Speaking My Mind") from the excellent Cherrystones Rocks compilation Lo Recordings put out a while back. If you liked that comp, or the "hairy funk" of Andy Votel's Vertigo Mixed cd, this may also be up your alley. Lots of organ grooves, wailing vocals, fuzzed out guitars, and catchy beats make the scene here. Bombastic horn sections, sweet melodies, and heavy riffs all coexist in these tracks. Maybe the so-called "prog/psych" documented here truly is a long-lost hybrid genre of music, nobody does stuff like this anymore do they??

This little engine that could, really did! The Omaha, Nebraskan record label Saddle Creek started out humbly back in 1993 with a limited-to-100 cassette tape by a youngster called Conor. Now a dozen years later, Saddle Creek is still home to the now fully grown Mr. Oberst (aka Bright Eyes, duh!) as well as his diverse musical brethren The Faint, Azure Ray and Cursive, among others. This dvd features a documentary by filmmakers Jason Kulbel and Rob Walters about the label's first ten years of existence and the town's tight-knit music scene that they spearheaded. Filled with tons of rare footage, interviews, performances and some home movies too. Sure to make all the artists' fans positively giddily weak in the knees!

You suckers without turntables are spared once again. The last eight split 12"s in Fat Cat's amazing series finally get digitized and compiled for convenient listening. Tracks from Dat Politics, Christoph De Babalon, Kid 606, Fennesz, Main, Avey Tare, Matmos, David Grubbs, Ultra-Red and loads more!

Since 1991 In The Red Records has taken it upon themselves to kindly provide the world with the best "low-brow rock'n'roll" (their words) in all their sweaty, dirty, malodorous raunch-glory (our words), and we love 'em for it! This is a perfect trash rock compilation for those who aren't afraid to mess their 'do, break a fingernail, raise a stink or spill a drink... er, as long as it's someone else's! Curiously tiltled collection of awesome emo from the Crank record label. Anyone who dug the old Rainer Maria records or the Get Up Kids will dig this collection. Minus a couple of weak whiney moments this is a fucking great collection. With: Vitreous Humor, Sunday's Best, Mineral, the Regrets, Boy's Life, Christie Front Drive, The Gloria Record, Far Apart (a band we hadn't heard of but probably the best cut on the record) and a bunch more.

Subtitled "17 A-Go-Go Ultrarities From the 60's Singapore and South-East Asia Underground", this comp fairly smokes in a psychedelic pop haze. Covering standards like "Buttons and Bows", but mostly playing by-the-numbers originals, bands like October Cherries, Rosnah and the Siglap Five, Ronnie Ong, and Naomi & the Boys (playing a great Peter Thomas number) played a mixture of surf, soul, r&b, and plain ole psych pop. A couple of the groups here even went to #1 in their home countries. Fuzz guitar! The tracks featuring girl singers sound just like the Ultra Chicks French girl group comps, thus testifying to the universal appeal the rock music of the day held for young people the world over. To commemorate twenty five years of existence, Rough Trade have released an action-packed compilation of sixteen 'old school' R.T. artists' songs performed by 'new school' R.T. artists. So, who is partaking in the festivities? Noneother than Belle & Sebastian, Alasdair Roberts, Elizabeth Fraser (well, they're not such new schoolers!), Oneida, The Detroit Cobras, The Fiery Furnaces, Delays, Royal City, Adam Green, The Tyde, Mystic Chords Of Memory, The Veils, Eastern Lane, The Hidden Cameras, Jeffrey Lewis, and current Cup favorite British Sea Power. And who is being covered? Lots of old faves... a couple by Young Marble Giants, The Clean, a couple by Galaxie 500, The Feelies, Aztec Camera, a couple by The Strokes (oops, *they're* not such old schoolers, are they?!), Ivor Cutler, Mazzy Star, James Blood Ulmer, Television Personalities, Scritti Politti, Robert Wyatt, and The Fall.

The bleak minimal wave and dark techno from DKA is a retrogarde affair, harkening back to Cabaret Voltaire, Portion Control, Nitzer Ebb, and the more austere cadre of industrial culture. The title itself call only be taken as an allusion to the Einsturzende Neubauten collections Strategies Against Architecture; but instead of the social orders that constrict and codify the human condition; DKA strikes against the desires and mechanisms of the body itself. The philosophical discourse seems to end there; and that's just fine, as the compilation seeks to anthologize DKA's own vision of the re-ignited forms of EBM and industrial dance trax which first came to light in the mid 80s. The much heralded High Functioning Flesh is featured on the comp, though we'll admit that we've never been taken by their schtick and their haircuts; but everything else on the comp is pretty top-notch. Xander Harris delves into Remission-era Skinny Puppy matched with John Carpenter bass-synth grooviness for one of the best tracks we've heard from him. RedRedRed (who's had a much overlooked gem of a record on Dark Entries) cuts a flinty pose on this hypno-gloomy track bolstered with impassioned vocals and melodic synth-noise malaise. DVA Damas' remix of the aforementioned High Functioning Flesh is a vast improvement upon the original, arriving at a near instrumental track that's not far from one of those Adrian Sherwood remixes of Ministry circa 1986. Tannhauser Gate, TWINS, and Tifaret round out the remainder of the comp. Certainly recommended for anyone keen on the comings and goings of Mannequin, Dark Entries, Medical Records, Minimal Wave, etc. etc. etc. Only a couple in stock, so please be patient if we have to wait for a restock...
