Mobile, Alabama's teen superstars are back with their second proper full length recorded in Chicago by Steve Albini. These five, fine young lads have been known to wreak havoc and make the young girls cry in their brilliant live shows: fireworks, costumes and wonderfully choreographed moves (complete with accompanying speedo-clad male dancer/cheerleader) to accompany a frantic, art-damaged garage rock stomp. Gop Ist Minee crams twelve untitled tracks in twenty blurringly scathing minutes, combining the raw energy of their live show with fucked electronic tweaking. Sci-fi b-movie r'n'r madness for your next no wave smackdown pajama party. If Arab On Radar or Six Finger Satellite tickle your funnybone, you might like this. Or you might not... Two short sides of sound collage from Tokyo's masterful sample artist and leader of the late great Ground Zero. These pieces are made up of short sound samples of almost any instrument imaginable: saxophone blasts, cello strokes, short metallic chord bursts, single plucks of the guitar as well as the noises made by hand movements all set to a metronomic sampled drumbeat. Quite interesting, but not a fully realized work. If Otomo chooses to continue this process, it could potentially have wonderful results. ----* ----* Prince Buster : ----* We are proud to be carrying these newly re-issued Prince Buster LPs and cds. Born Cecil Campbell in Kingston, Jamaica in 1938, Prince Buster made his mark in the fiercely competitive Jamaican music scene in the sixties and seventies through uncompromising originality, showmanship and just plain boasterism. Having begun with a fairly successful career as a professional boxer, Prince Buster eventually found work as a body guard / hired thug for Coxsone Dodd in 1961. It was only after a year of working with Dodd before Buster had recorded his own album. He proceeded to found several record labels, and open his own record shop over the next decade. He not only claimed to be the inventor of Ska, but also self-appointed himself as the voice of the Jamaican people. Though he may or may not have been much of a representative of the Jamaican people, his music was picked up far and away in the U.K. and he became quite an inspiration to the Mod subculture (Madness having popularized his song "One Step Beyond", and "Al Capone" was the first Jamaican single to chart the top 20 in the U.K.) Despite whether or not his claims of importance in Jamaican music are exaggerated, the music he released throughout the 60's and 70's is always original and always quite good. And since his material has been so scarce for so long (with the exception of tracks on compilations), it's a pleasure to finally have his material available in a somewhat steady supply. I say "somewhat steady" because it seems that the vinyl is pressed by Prince Buster himself (some of the LP's have a label addressed in England, but all of them are all hand stamped with the address to Prince Buster's Record Shack in Kingston, Jamaica. And to add to the confusion, rumor has it that the Prince now lives in Miami Beach, Florida... Go figure!) The CD's, however, seem to be more consistently available. It should also be pointed out that the vinyl here is not your perfect 180 gram, virgin vinyl, but good old pre-washed, crunchy, take-your-risk Jamaican vinyl.
