Sometime in the early '80s, a bunch of young Dutchmen formed a couple of post-punk bands that nobody remembers anymore; but on one Thursday that happened to be the 20th of some month, one of those bands abandoned their rhythms entirely and splattered out a drone-tape and synth-noise set that had the audience freaking out. The punk structures were scrapped entirely and THU20 was stuck onto this project as the new name. Get it? The Dutchmen of THU20 included Jac Van Bussel, Peter Duimelinks, Roel Meelkop, Jos Smolders, and Guido Doesborg (later replaced by the ubiquitous Frans De Waard). The mid to late '80s proved to be a highly prolific time for THU20, although the project continues on to this day at a much more restrained pace. The ideas that went into THU20 transitioned from Joy Division into Cabaret Voltaire & Throbbing Gristle quickly arriving at a DIY punk form of musique concrete and electro-acoustic experimentation. Such was a similar trajectory for the German ensemble P16.D4, albeit towards even more unconventional goals. In the studio, THU20's work could be austere and brutalist in the obfuscated collages and disjointed slabs of noise; but the live version of THU20 proved to be far more shambolic, dynamically expressive, and rewardingly chaotic. Vroeg Werk is a diverse collection that spans both of these modes of operation, with the second of these two discs being entirely live recordings and the first culling from the dustbin of the cassette culture. The studio material found on disc one has some semblances of the more abstracted tape work found on Einsturzende Neubauten's Drawings Of O.T sans Blixa, with the opening track "5720" being particularly choice. But, the live material is really where THU20 shine, grafting gritty electro-acoustic noise sourced from voice, tape, synth, feedback, pedals, shortwave, power tools, scrap metal, and who knows what else onto thin rhythmic spines of morse code blips, overblown tape loops, and primitive drum machinations. Effectively, THU20 would land somewhere between the panzer bleakness of MB and the viral shredding of Nocturnal Emissions. Not a bad place to be...
What's The Hubub Bub is a twistedly brilliant DIY post punk holy grail from a group known simply as Tronics, not so much a group as the work of one man, Ziro Baby, and his peculiar brand of post-punk / folk-punk /art-rock / protest music sounds relevatory even today. Originally released at the beginning of the eighties, this record must have really blown minds back then. Equal parts singer/songwriter punk folk songsmithery, minimalist punk primitivism, and ahead of its time tape experiments and sound collage, What's The Hubub Bub has been floating around the underground for 30 years now, with just a track or two popping up on obscure comps, which is hard to believe considering how fucking great this whole record is.
The first half tends more toward proper songs, although the record begins with the sounds of sirens, before in swoop brittle and angular guitars, languid and psychedelic, simply strummed and darkly jangly, accompanied by simple hand percussion, opener "How Do You Do Again" is crazy catchy, repetitive and mantra like, stream of consciousness lyrics, sort of sung/spoken, it's easy to hear the sort of influence this band has had on contemporary groups like Sic Alps (SA's Mike Donovan is a HUGE fan!), and that song sets the template, mostly one or two parts, looped and repeated, minimal lyrics, also repeated over and over, some songs have a distinctly fifties / sixties style pop sound, "Helsinki" is like some classic Beatles or Kinks song arranged for tinny guitar and hand drums. But it's right around "Space Message" that things start to get really weird, a brief blast of static, and garbled FX, with Tronics mainman (only man?) Ziro transmitting from the ether, his voice becoming equally garbled, very Conet Project sounding, and really, that signals a sort of seismic sonic shift, cuz the rest of the record, while rife with more punk-folk ditties, is also peppered with strange sonic experiments and collaged tape loops. There's the old timey rock and roll of "The Other Man" and then the murky droned out balladry of "Alone", that sounds like the saddest, warbliest Joe Meek outtake ever, but if any record was back loaded it's this one. Cuz then there's "Intro", which is in fact a sprawling bit of early sampledelia, bird song, weird voices, tape hiss, and strange effects, echo drenched samples of a sobbing woman, maudlin piano, snippets taped off the radio, bursts of jagged distorto guitar, little bits of orchestra, and symphonies, and what sounds like TV theme songs, all layered into a fantastic bit of psychedelic avant sound collage, and that leads right into what might be the greatest Tronics song EVER, "Shark Fucks", catchy, and anthemic, ridiculous lyrics, a main hook that KILLS, a wicked chorus, still just guitar and distorted drum (just one drum), with laid back, drawled vox, it will instantly get lodged in your brain, and you'll want to play it over and over and over, we have been, probably driving people insane, but we LOVE it! We're actually kind of amazed this song hasn't been covered a million times, it's SOOOOO good. Totally worth the price of admission, especially when he slips into some weird garbled underwater vocals, presumably just made with his mouth and not any actual FX.
Once you make it past "Shark Fucks", if you ever do, there's the primitive minimal fuzz-guitar punk of "I'm A Diver", also crazy catchy, and then things finish off with another sound experiment, the two part "Piece For A Galaxy Bar Jukebox", the first part, all pulsing sci-fi electronics, a dark shadowy kosmische, that gets people coming up to see what we're playing, every time it comes on in the store, moody and minimal and haunting, it's only three minutes, but it's the kind of thing we could listen to forEVER. The second part is still more sci-fi electro weirdness, this one less shimmery and droney, and more percussive and rhythmic, percolating bloops, that explode into jagged shards of distorted synth, and again, we would have loved if it stretched out for 10 or 15 minutes instead of just two...
So completely bafflingly brilliant, and utterly essential. A new unanimous favorite for sure. We also got another Tronics reissue, Say! What Is This?, which we'll review next time, but if you want that one too, just ask!
This is another record that barely needs a description, most aQ heads are gonna want one of these for sure, a collection of exclusive, unreleased tracks celebrating 15 years of releases by the mighty Rocket Records, a UK label that over the years has brought us tons of amazing spaced out heaviness, from groups like The Heads, Goat, Hills, Gnod, White Hills, Teeth Of The Sea, Mugstar, Anthroprophh and loads more, this comp collects some of those very same bands, along with a handful of 'friends of Rocket' as well as some other outfits who have records coming soon on the label. Needless to say, even just the names we know make this worth grabbing. Recent Record Of The Weekers Teeth Of The Sea offer up a fierce field of grinding static drenched drones, shot through with smoldering feedback, and progged out psychedelia, while another former Record Of The Week combo, UK space rock heavies Gnod, deliver some tripped out reverb soaked weirdness. Swedish psych rockers Hills get all buzzing kraut-raga, channeling Parson Sound and Amon Duul, while long time aQ faves, UK via Texas weirdos Shit And Shine unfurl a sprawling 15 minute rhythmic noise rock dirge, with creepy helium vox, and some seriously harsh garage tone, like the Butthole Surfers but even more caveman. Cherrystones give us his take on tripped out minimal drift, a little bit dubby, laces with shimmery guitars, and fields of mysterious glitchery, and big time aQ faves Goat offer up some unreleased live action, their special brand of African infused Swedish occult stoner space rock tribalism, that has us hankering for more more more! And yet another previous Record Of The Week honoree, Heads side project Anthroprophh, delivers what sounds like a super heavy, ultra drivingly rhythmic spaced out This Heat, all dense percussion, thick swells of chordal thrum, and FX soaked shimmer. Vision Fortune, whose Cardinal Fuzz lp we reviewed recently, give us some blown out, grinding, fuzzy, distorto dub, wound around loping math-kraut mesmer. And those are just the bands we know. Of the new to us combos, Blood Sport get all groovy, almost funky, sorta proggy, with an almost African feel, a little bit of a Goat influence perhaps, with some super stylized, almost glam sounding vox that align their sound with fellow space rocker Hookworms. There's a Swedish outfit called Uran, whose sound is all gristly, electro-fuzz, distorto stomp, groovy space garage heaviness, there's the Heads related outfit Roll bars, with some squelchy synths, thick fuzzed out bass, sounds bit like Jane's Addiction's "Mountain Song" drugged up and spaced out, and finally, an Italian band, that the label claims to be one of their faves, The Lay Llamas, who get all woozily playful, unwinding a mesmerizing stretch of looped space-kraut drift, all tranced out and cyclical. Phew! So much good stuff. Obviously, all you space / psych / drone rock nerds who dig all things Cardinal Fuzz / Agitated / Rocket (obviously), are gonna want this, so best grab one quick before they are gone for good...
Last year we freaked out about an awesome reissue of Chicha jams by the legendary Peruvian group Juaneco Y Su Combo. So we were beyond thrilled to discover this collection featuring the best of the sounds of Chicha that came bursting out of Peru from the late '60s to the late '70s. Juaneco Y Su Combo are featured here of course, with a few tracks from that disc we love, but what's amazing is that lots of the other groups are just as good, if not even better, and that's saying a whole lot!
It's such an irresistible sound, infused with elements of Andean melodies, Cuban gujiras and plenty of surfy and psychedelic rock tinges. The songs here are filled with so much mood and spirit and will definitely appeal to such a wide range of music lovers, from those who dig weird and wonderful world music a la Sublime Frequencies, to those who dig the more classic psych pop sounds of the Nuggets compilations. These are songs that sizzle and crackle with so much flavor. We could also see rare groove folks getting super excited about some of these sounds and we wouldn't be surprised if samples of them made their way onto some Madlib record in the future.
This actually came out -before- that great Juaneco Su Combo disc so if you loved that one, you gotta make sure to grab this one too, so you can get turned on to other Chicha greats like Los Mirlos, Las Hijos Del Sol, and Los Destellos (who do a Beethoven track in amazing chicha fashion!).
It's always so awesome to blast this in the store, everyone starts tapping their feet and all frowns turn upside down as it's pretty near impossible to be dour or stoic while these songs are playing, and radiating so much colorful fun. So damn good!
Victrola was an Italo-disco project that released just one single in 1983 although they began performing as a standard quartet back in 1979, only to slim down to just a duo, electronics and guitar. This one single hedges more toward the darker regions of Italo-disco with minor-key basslines girding metronomic hi-hat and mechanoid disco rhythms. The title track graces us with some catchy, ice-synth melodicism and monotone vocal melancholy that's not too far from the likes of Section 25 or Neon Judgement; and this was actually featured on the recent Mutazione compendium of Italian post-punk, new wave, and early Italo-disco. The B side "Game Of Despair" is an even darker affair with skeletal guitar chords chiming with the elegiac electronics and slow-motion rhythmic tranced-out programming. Both tracks are well over 8 minutes long, and it seems that this is all that Victrola were ever to record. That's a shame as these are stellar tracks for the black-eyeliner set! As always, Dark Entries has spared no expense with the production value of the vinyl, with a top-shelf remastering job by George Horn and an exact reproduction of the original artwork.

They're the folks who have been bringing us a lot of cool cd reissues of obscure, cult metal bands from the '80s (such as Max Planck, Xinr and Detest), some of 'em as part of Stormspell's ongoing "Red White and Heavy Arcane Collector Series For The Initiated" featuring long-lost demos from bands that are SO cult and obscure they never even got signed to make a proper album.
Well, the old farts at Stormspell have now found some young bands also stuck in the '80s, and have begun a new series of releases, putting these bands' demos out on cd but this time not waiting 30 years to do it. Fantastically dubbed the "Jewels Of Gwahlur" series (the Jewels Of Gwahlur being the macguffin of a Conan story of the same name), five volumes have now been released, and we're reviewing 'em all this list. It's a bit like something else Stormspell did some years ago, the "Thrash Clash" series of splits by underground thrash acts. But these bands are even more "old school" in sound.
Each entry in the series comes in nice trifold digi-wallet packaging, the covers pretty much identical except for the band logos, with a standardized "bejewelled ancient leather tome" look, a la the 3rd Edition D&D rulebooks if you're familiar with those; doubtless some of these bands are! However, despite the uniform design, each entry in the series gets its own unique artwork on the inside, as well as credits, liner notes, etc. Most of these discs are ep-length, around 4-6 tracks, but it should be noted that they're quite cheaply priced. So even though we're reviewing each one individually you might as well buy 'em all and let your cd player sort 'em out! As for us, we're looking forward to hearing more from all these bands (pretty sure we will!), and are curious as to what further Jewels Of Gwahlur will be uncovered by Stormspell in the future.
The "occult heavy metal" of Slovenians VIGILANCE is pretty rippin', galloping NWOBHM styled stuff, kinda like a rougher, helter-skelter Iron Maiden at times. Rollickin' riffs, shredding solos, wailing vox, the works. This disc is also a bit longer than the others in this series, with the five tracks of Vigilance's Steeds Of Time ep (previously released on vinyl) included here augmented by another four demo tracks.
Apparently these guys "got signed" and have a full-length album out now too, we're not surprised. Gonna have to track it down!
Killer new split from Matthew Bower and Samantha Davies of Skullflower in their Voltiegeurs guise, which this time is not that far removed from the Skullflower mothership, in fact, a glancing listen, one would most certainly be forgiven for assuming it was a Skullflower jam proper, a dense field of pulsing, pulsating blackened psychedelic drone-noise, a sprawl of layered guitars, buried melodies, shifting textures, gristled and crumbling, but blurred into something almost tranquil and meditative, a heavy drone-guitar blowout, smoothed out into what ultimately sounds like a more washed out blissed out Skullflower which is not a bad thing at all.
The flipside comes from UK knuckledraggers Dark Bargain, who deliver a serious sonic wallop in the form of some blown out, ultra distorted noise rock crush, dirgey and in the red, a Brainbombs sort of death march churn, rife with buried melodies, and some subtle hookiness, but overall, it's more a bludgeoning sonic anvil to the skull, which will most certainly hit the spot for fans of BB, Rusted Shut, Violent Students, Drunkdriver and the like.

Evolving is the latest from NY doom/sludge/dirge/drone duo Wicked King Wicker, and does in fact find the band evolving, their already blackened, tarpit, ambient dirgery moving further away from any proper metallic riffery, and instead, exploding in a supernova of power electronics and blacknoize brutality. The opening track here, a 10 minute sprawl titled "The Devil Must Learn The Limitations Of The Host", drapes a pulsating buzz over a field of grinding blackened electronics, of rumbling, crumbling drones, the vibe weirdly motorik, buried beneath all the noisiness, there seems to be strange shapes drifting, hauntingly melodic, giving the noisiness a mysteriously tranquil core. Soon the sound is engulfed in swirls of white noise, swaths of hiss and static, there seem to be vocals as well, buried in the mix, a monstrous bellow, blurred into still more smeared soft focus blackbuzz, the sound locked into an almost kraut-drone noisiness, before splintering into something much more caustic and chaotic, but still anchored by that buzzing riff-like pulsation.
That track definitely lays the foundation, as "A Prayer For Death" explodes right out of the gate, a heady, howling blast of Merzbowian murk, all churning, roiling crunch, and like that first track, obscuring something much more melodic underneath, this time, a dirgey slowcore pulse, and a field of constantly shifting textures, shards of feedback rain from the sky like hailstones, squalls of grinding skree, and crumbling distortion, all woven into something weirdly hypnotic, yet still undeniably brutal and caustic.
Things don't really let up. "Zen And The Art Of Nihilism" unfurls a field of grinding low end, wreathed in sheets of ear shredding upper register blasts, again, somehow transformed into something weirdly rhythmic, and strangely listenable, this track in particular, almost like multiple black metal riffs, melted down, and poured directly into your earholes, a tar black sonic pitch, pure blacknoize bliss. And finally, "The High Exalted Nothing" finishes things off with a riffy, dirgey churn, a darkly propulsive black dirge, almost industrial sounding, like Wolf Eyes meets SUNNO))) meets Bunkur, with some seriously terrifying vokills, no high end on this one, a black murk blowout that might be our favorite track here!

WILDHUNT are an Austrian hesher duo playing "Teutonic power/speed metal", basically heads-down, old school thrash, with elements of even older, more traditional heavy metal styles. The five tracks on this demo disc are full of ripping but melodic guitar leads, some bass leads too, rough but not too gruff vocals, and TONS of raw energy. Headbanging is job one! Pretty solid and enjoyable, will put a smile on your face and a crimp in your neck, if nothing more. Crack open a beer while listening to this and you might finish off the six-pack before you're done spinning this five-song disc (be careful!). Good times.
Haven't heard anything from these boundary-pushing Cascadian black metallers for a few years, not since 2011's magnificent Celestial Lineage. But for those of you hankering for some more Wolves, here's the vinyl-only release of a live recording also done in 2011. That's 2011AD, not BC, they want you to know, make no mistake. And as the title also indicates, it's a BBC session, recorded in England. Two songs, one per side (WITRR have long songs, these two are over ten minutes each). You get a rendition of "Prayer Of Transformation" on the A side, and "Thuja Magus Imperium" on the flip. The studio versions of both tracks can be found on the Celestial Lineage album.

If there was ever a band more "AQ" than Zombi I'd be hard pressed to think of it. Take two guys, both obsessed with horror movies, particularly those by director Dario Argento, and even more specifically the Argento soundtracks by Italian prog outfit Goblin. Give these two guys a drumkit and a massive arsenal of synthesizers, and sign them to Relapse. And what do you get? Basically, a record we just can't stop listening to. And songs that are just BEGGING to accompany some gruesome footage of disemboweled corpses, dark stormy nights, windows covered in flies, and screaming barefoot girls in nighties running through graveyards in the pouring rain. Not that the music of Zombi is THAT scary, it's just so evocative, and SO reminiscent of Goblin, it's hard not to try to envision what kitschy eighties European horror movie these tracks might have come from. Sonically, the simplest description and the one that should have most of you rushing out to pick this up straight away, would be Goblin meets Tortoise. Yep, post rock horror movie soundtrack music swathed in ominous synthesizer buzz and electronic drone. Maybe a more accurate description though might be: long lost Goblin tracks performed by AQ faves Heldon, with all the requisite swooshing spaciness, haunting minor key melodies, propulsive krautrock rhythms and thick fuzzy synths. The synth soundtrack music of John Carpenter is also an obvious influence, but again, put to use in a post rock context. Whichever way, you NEED this!
