It's a Matador Records 15th birthday fest, and the party favors are two cds and a dvd containing highlights from 1999 through 2004, the years since their tenth birthday compilation!
The dvd features a dozen videos by the likes of Pavement, Mogwai, Wisdom Of Harry, New Pornographers, Mary Timony, Stephen Malkmus, Interpol, Cat Power, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Matmos and Cornelius. On the audio side of things, one disc compiles eighteen 'greatest hits' by artists such as Guided By Voices, Interpol, the New Pornographers, Yo La Tengo, Matmos, Bardo Pond, Dead Meadow, Belle & Sabastian, Mogwai, Cat Power, Mission Of Burma among others. The second disc is the crowd pleaser tho' with sixteen rare and previously unreleased songs kicking off with the compilation's best track "Graceland" by the New Pornographers -- totally great! it's worth buying this comp for this song alone! -- plus Stephen Malkmus live in Spain, Mission Of Burma live in Boston, Yo La Tengo live acoustic in Australia as well as remixes of Mogwai and Preston School of Industry... oh yeah, and did we mention the New Pornographers' "Graceland"? We did!
Can't imagine a blackmetalhead who wouldn't consider this DVD absolutely essential. And it just might be enough to lure some unsuspecting innocents to the dark side as well. Videos from Absu, Immortal, Antaeus, Impaled Nazarene, Melechesh, Nortre Dame, Phazm, Arkhon Infaustus, Dark Tranquility, Gehennah, and a bunch more. As well as live sets from Angel Corpse, Immortal, Blasphemy, Inhume, Notre Dame and Sublime Cadaveric Decomposition. Pretty much everything on this disc is a blast, but definite highlights would have to be the two Immortal videos, the first, "Blashyrkh (Mighty Raven Dark)", features Abbath and Demonaz, in full corpsepaint and spikes, playing atop a mountain, above fjords and forests, with superimposed lightning storms, and occasional unintentionally hilarious mad dashes from peak to peak, while still rocking! The second video for "Grim And Frostbitten kingdom" has the band fully rocking out again, this time atop a glacier, again in full corpsepaint, except for fill in drummer Hellhammer, who is sans corpsepaint and wearing a frilly pirate shirt. The whole thing intercut with shots of Abbath singing through a sheet of ice. Wow. Then there's the totally over the top Notre Dame videos, especially "Scarecrows" which features the whole band strapped to wooden posts and singing from atop their perches, in the middle of a corn field. And howabout Impaled Nazarene's black metal "Smells Like Teen Spirit"-ish video for "Armageddon Death Squad." Woah. We could go on and on, but trust us, this is awesome! And for sure don't miss the bonus feature "At Home With Snowy Shaw", a goofy Cribs-like tour of Shaw's (from Notre Dame) horror movie memento stuffed house as well as a little acoustic sing along. Following hot on the heels of the Early Modulations compilation from a while back, the OHM box takes the same general idea; a brief and cursory overview of the whole of experimental electronic music, and attempts to give it a little more depth. And it does, to a certain degree. But such a massive undertaking could fill 10 cds, or 20. So what we have here, is 3 cds, 42 tracks, from a who's who of electronic music in the last 32 years: Clara Rockmore, Oliver Messien, John Cage, Edgard Varese, Stockhausen, La Monte Young, Xenakis, Luc Ferrari, Terry Riley, David Tudor, Morton Subotnick, Steve Reich, Raymond Scott, Brian Eno, Robert Ashley, Bernard Parmegiani and a bunch more. A pretty great assortment, for sure, and definitely the best 20th century/avant electronica primer to come along. The only frustration is that a great number of the pieces are edits, often 5 or 6 minutes from a 20 or 30 minute piece, rendering some slow building gradual shifting works a bit limp. But other than that, this OHM compilation is pretty excellent, packaged impeccably in a triple digipak, housed in a cool silkscreened transparent slipcase, with a fairly well researched book and some spot on musical choices. YEEEEAAY. What a wonderful service Load provides, bringing awesome musicians/artists from the dregs of Providence (and elsewhere) to all of us. Those guys live there so we don't have to. Well, Load's Pick A Winner compilation cd features some of our favorite artynoisebands from Prov: La Machine (ex-Six Finger Satellite and Landed), Lightning Bolt, Forcefield, Pixeltan, Pleasurehorse and even a tiny little glistening nugget of a song from (sadly, now defunct) Thee Hydrogen Terrors. The Load artists are not your typical noise bands, mind you. They are 100 percent a pertinent cataclysm of talent and ideas. And then there's the dvd. Holy shit! It's so great to see these videos. Most of the featured artists typically use whatever they have or can use around to make totally genuine two-dimensional magic with, and to see their work transcend into pure video conjury is truly inspiring. The package even comes with a deck of cards, each specially designed by Load artists, just to show they care about you, the consumer. So buy this cd/dvd now! In fact, buy three!! (Not advised for people with heart problems.) Oh, but unfortunately Load doesn't care as much about their artists, as there is no tracklisting to tell you who is what, etc. So our mp3 samples are listed as track numbers only.
A quick look at the list of the bands on this DVD is all it should take. GBH, Angelic Upstarts, Adicts, UK Subs, Mau Maus, Exploited, Johnny Thunders, Lurkers, Eater, Vibrators, Peter And The Test Tube Babies and so many more. TOTALLY essential. Culled from an extensive video archive compiled by an independent video company who spent the eighties driving a van around the UK filming show after show and releasing them on video. This is a sort of a best of compiled from all of those videos and holy shit this stuff is amazing. All of the above mentioned bands totally destroy, and it's the first time we've seen lots of those bands live. Worth it for the GBH and Adicts footage alone! Plus there are tons of bands we've never even heard of who are just as cool: One Way System, Burial, Outl4w, Destructors, Urban Dogs, XPOZEZ, Dead Mans Shadow and even a handful of second wave punk rock bands like Red Alert, Menace, Business, Lurkers and more. Fuck yeah! Mohawks and liberty spikes and more spiked leather than the Folsom Street Fair!!!
I don't have cable, so I don't know if the rumours are true that MTV (or MTV2?) brought the Headbanger's Ball back on the air. But if you have a DVD player you've got your own Headbangers Ball right here, and it's underground stuff that probably wouldn't get played on TV anyway. Relapse is one of the biggest and best metal labels in the country, and from their roster they've selected both new and long-time favorites to appear on this DVD video collection. From stoner metallers High On Fire (whose quite excellent video Andee does report having seen on MTV) to kinetic spazzcore heroes Dillinger Escape Plan, from the streetwise grind of Brutal Truth to the Nordic bombast of Amorphis, this ought to entertain any metal fan. Amidst the variety of metal styles and video budgets displayed here, we especially dug the rap-rock parody piss-take of grindcore outfit Blood Duster, the old-school macabre metal of Deceased, Unsane's classic skater-wipe-out video for "Sick", and Alchemist's industrial, psychedelicized channelling of Voivod. Pretty sweet collection of music/video/documentaries from probably our favorite hip hop label. Def Jux continue to blaze their own unique path in pretty much every thing they do. The DVD features an hour long tour documentary, tons of live concert footage, videos from El-P, RJD2, Mr. Lif, and Murs as well as a making of documentary for the Murs video, as well as a documentary about the label itself. All in 5.1 digital surround sound. The cd contains an exclusive RJD2 megamix, 5 exclusive live tracks and a hip hop trivia game.
This little engine that could, really did! The Omaha, Nebraskan record label Saddle Creek started out humbly back in 1993 with a limited-to-100 cassette tape by a youngster called Conor. Now a dozen years later, Saddle Creek is still home to the now fully grown Mr. Oberst (aka Bright Eyes, duh!) as well as his diverse musical brethren The Faint, Azure Ray and Cursive, among others. This dvd features a documentary by filmmakers Jason Kulbel and Rob Walters about the label's first ten years of existence and the town's tight-knit music scene that they spearheaded. Filled with tons of rare footage, interviews, performances and some home movies too. Sure to make all the artists' fans positively giddily weak in the knees!
It's finally here! You've seen the teasers on the previous two Soul Jazz Studio One releases, now's your chance to have the whole kit n' kaboodle for relative little pocket change. 4 hours, yes four friggin' hours of video for your pleasure. The meat of the footage is an extended interview (over two and a half hours) with Coxsone Dodd in his Kingston studio and hanging out in Kingston at some of the old dancehall locations surrounded by adoring fans and Studio One stable staples. Interspersed throughout are additional brief interviews with King Stitt, Alton Ellis, Ken Booth, Studio One engineer Sylvan Morris, Sister Ignacious of the Alpha Boys School (who produced some of the island's greatest musicians) and many other old timers from Studio One's glory days recounting the label's illustrious history. As bonus features to this documentary are some interviews with Alton Ellis, Norma & Courtney Dodd, Ken Boothe, King Stitt, Dennis Alcapone and more. But wait, there's more! And it's not a collection of steak knives. Soul Jazz has also thrown in a best of Studio One collection (LP or CD, your choice) that seriously kicks ass and a 100 page book filled with archival pictures and bios. Considering the huge role Studio One / Coxsone Dodd had in shaping Jamaican music through the sixties and seventies (not to mention the lasting effect the treasure of Studio One rhythms continue to have on the island's music) this document is an excellent source of historical info.
I can't close this up without expressing one bone to pick with the creators of this film. You'll notice when you pop this puppy on your DVD player (by the way, the discs we've got are region free NTSC) is a horrible video title generated frame that surrounds the picture -- kind of like the trademark frame that surrounds all the Soul Jazz Studio One releases. No, this doesn't go away ever during the film and no, you can't get rid of it if you want to. It really sucks and I can only suspect the most nefarious of reasons that Soul Jazz would include it throughout the entire film. Shame on them for that. Chances are, like us, you'll mentally crop that frame out soon enough. This thing is just too damned good to let a stupid frame ruin it! Can I also say that it makes an excellent stocking stuffer? (the CD version anyway, the LP you might have to have a big ass sock to fit it.)
Whoo-hoo! Awesome to have this on dvd at long last, in a nice, complete "collector's edition" with various bonus features. One of the most exciting rock/R&B audio-visual documents ever, The Teenage Awards Music International Show live concert film was originally screened in theaters in 1964, and has never been on dvd before.
It features James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, Jan and Dean, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, The Supremes, Lesley Gore, and more... including, in footage cut from most previous versions of this film, the Beach Boys. Watch Mick Jagger trying to cop James Brown's moves, watch James Brown do stuff that Mick could never do in a million years, watch garage band The Barbarians bash out their mop topped pop backed by a drummer with a hook for a hand, it's all here... an all time classic, now you can take in the whole thing rather than just watching individual clips on YouTube!

Pretty amazing DVD collection of emo / screamo / grind / math / no / new wave / death metal weirdness past and present. Moving Units, Jenny Piccolo, Get Hustle, Cattle Decapitation, Swing Kids, Love Life, Orthrelm, The Locust and the Blood Brothers. All the footage is live, super grainy and lo-fi, but really great looking. And even greater looking than the actual band clips are the menus/interface, jumpy and blurry, super staticky and scratched like old damaged film stock, with super creepy Sam McPheeters animations. Nice!

Dronevolk is a new documentary focused on the burgeoning underground dronefolk scene in Belgium, made up of a handful of bands, aQ customers will no doubt be well familiar with: Kiss The Anus Of A Black Cat, Bear Bones Lay Low, Silvester Anfang and Ignatz. By now, most faithful readers of the aQ list own at least one record by some or all of those groups, but this disc takes advantage of the format, not only offering up more of the music we love so much, but glimpses into the creative process, allowing the viewer to see how and where the music was recorded, to see the groups perform live, on big stages, in little clubs, in bedrooms and practice spaces, and allows the groups themselves to discuss their music and influences.
Kiss The Anus start things off, recording track by track, tambourine, guitar, vocals, harmonium, watching the song slowly take form. From a bedroom and a computer, the disembodied parts coalesce becoming something more magical and mysterious, eventually taking form as a song, being performed by a full band on stage. Plenty of interview footage, live performance, home movies, backstage, on tour, and like us, you probably wondered where the heck he came up with that name, well now's your chance to find out.
Up next is Bear Bones Lay Low, a super young guy, moved from Venezuela to Belgium, he now also plays in Silvester Anfang, but for Bear Bones it's serious floorcore, hunched over a bank of effects and keyboard, swaying back and forth, hair in face, black pants and a green Izod (!), the sound a thick coruscating drone, haunting vocals drifting in and out, cool to see those sounds coming from such an unassuming figure, the transformative power of music. Other footage of him kneeling with a guitar, unfurling wavery fractured folk, shots of practice space sessions, recording and rehearsing, some super intense live performance, or at as intense as one mop topped dude kneeling on the floor can be, but the music is dark and drone-y and intense!
Then along comes Silvester Anfang revealed to be much more of a proper rock band, and a bunch of goofy dudes judging from their interview, especially considering their provocative cover art and mysteriously heavy sounds. Much of the interview concerns metal, specifically how there is NO metal in Silvester Anfang, and how just because they LIKE metal, does not mean that they play metal. Also discussion of the artwork, and how it gives people the wrong impression, and how FUN is a big part of what they do, no matter how dark and intense the music is. Lots of pre-show ritual, setting up, tuning up, eventually giving way to full on dronejam, with nearly the whole band hunched over on the floor, strange, but sort of ritualistic and cool looking. Also some improv street corner jams, with kids and homeless folks, all super percussive and chaotic and exuberant
Last up is Ignatz, another pretty unassuming dude, his segment opening with a gorgeous live performance, on a stage in the woods, afternoon sunlight filtering through the trees, the vocals a ghostly mumble, the guitar ragged and abstract. Exactly how you might imagine it would be. Some very low key interview footage, and a glimpse of the home, the studio, where this mysterious music takes shape, which then helps you realize that these places are not so different than where we live, and play, and that much of the mystery comes from the person, and their connection to whatever spirit compels them to make these sounds.
Beautifully packaged in a slimline dvd case, full color covers, the opening and closing credits feature some amazing black and white animation, and for those of you who still aren't sure you need one of these, it also includes bonus unreleased MP3's from all four groups!

Yet another fantastic collection of fascinating sights and sounds from Sublime Frequencies, this time from Southeast Asia, Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand, etc... filmed by Robert Millis, he of Climax Golden Twins, as well as a frequent Sublime Frequencies contributor / collaborator / curator and an avid collector of world music and lost 78s. And like past SF dvds, My Friend Rain is another fantastical journey through the streets of Southeast Asia, a travelogue of street musicians, town squares, temples, forests, people's homes, markets, food stalls, performances are interspersed with more seemingly mundane occurrences, which somehow still seem magical, a priest sweeping out a rainswept temple floor, food being assembled while a band plays wildly in the background, a glorious vocal and drum cacophony, crashing cymbals, and there's also some serious weirdness, a strange selection of statues, some all bloody with their guts pulled out, meat being chopped on a cart, boats being driven through barely enough water to keep them afloat... Like a series of abstract short films woven together into a fantastically impressionistic musical portrait of places and people. One of the coolest moments a guy who plays this incredible circular drum set, all these tiny drums hanging in a row, totally encircling the performer, and he plays them super fast, with his hands, and the sounds are so divine, somewhere between gamelan and steel drums. Would love to get a whole record of just that.
There's so much to see, definitely worth rewatching.
The dvd is also accompanied by a cd, a soundtrack, featuring all the music featured in the film, popular, traditional, culled from live performances, lp archives and old cassettes, including that amazing circular drum piece (the instrument is called a Hsiang Waing), as well as the blind musician who opens and closes the film, playing a strange guitar with a metal bowl affixed to the neck for percussion, there's also a gorgeous song performed with a small leaf held between the musicians fingers and played like a reed, and of course some Asian pop songs, fuzzy, poppy, funky, groovy, such good stuff. Like all Sublime Frequencies release, so very recommended.
We're pretty sure there's never been a singer or songwriter more able to capture the abject desolation of the human soul better than Townes Van Zandt. A true master of the sad sad song. The ultimate broken hearted country troubadour. No strings or huge arrangements needed, just his achingly beautiful voice, a fingerpicked guitar and a heart full of hurt. Just listen to "Waitin' Around To Die" and try to tell us there could possibly be a sadder song.
And his life most definitely plays out like one of his songs. A rambling journey full of loneliness and confusion, drugs and alcohol, always torn between his music and his family, his need to perform and his longing for home. A gorgeously shot portrait of a tortured soul, cobbled together from rare interviews and home movies, live performances and interviews with friends and families. It's certainly not a new story, musician loves his family, but also loves music and the road, is tortured by drug and drink, and dies way too early. But it seems to resonate so much more when the subject is Van Zandt. Could be because we love his music so much, could also be that his music seemed to be about death, almost a longing for that sweet release, but complicated by his love for his family and friends, and a desire, nay a physical need to make music. Some of the anecdotes are so brutal. Committed to a mental hospital and forced to undergo shock therapy, suffering a fall and trying to record, while in a wheelchair, only later finding out he actually had a broken hip the whole time. Performing while strung out, and bombing so badly that a friend had to come on stage and force him to stop. So sad. Especially when you hear his beautiful fragile music.
Amazingly shot, and so perfectly edited, moving and emotional, so much so that at least two folks here who watched it were brought to tears. Includes interviews with Willie Nelson (who partnered up with Merle Haggard and had a huge hit with Van Zandt's "Pancho And Lefty"), Emmylou Harris (who had a hit with it first!), Kris Kristofferson, Steve Earle, Guy Clark, Steve Shelley from Sonic Youth as well as heartbreaking interviews with his kids and all three of his wives.
Bonus features include rare performances from Townes Van Zandt, his son JT Van Zandt, Devendra Banhart, extra interview footage, commentary, the theatrical trailer and more.
Best drummer in the world? Well that can be argued, and we don't want to get into that right now (good thing Elliott's not here anymore, I bet he and Andee could go on for hours discussing their favorite drummers...). But the point is that Magma mastermind Christian Vander definitely deserves to be included in the pantheon of percussionists who might be considered for the title of world's best. He'd certainly get the vote of quite a few fans of wigged-out prog rock, as exemplified by the band that he's led since the late '60s, the science fictional, spiritual French prog institution known as Magma. Such fans will probably be very interested in this release, a dvd version of what's essentially Vander's "drum instructional video", originally issued on video cassette in 1988. No, it's not a regular drum clinic thing like you might get from Carmine Appice or Dale Bozzio...
It's basically an interview (in French, with English subtitles) with Vander, the burly Magma mastermind smoking cigarettes while sitting (naturally enough) at his drum kit, ready to physically illustrate his answers to any drumming-related questions, which is pretty much what this film's all about. The Q&A is both philosophical and practical, touching upon specific Magma compositions, Vander's drumming theory and technique, and his influences (various American jazz drummers that his rather hip parents happened to know, and of course the music of John Coltrane). You'll learn about how he used to practice with his wrists underwater, with hammers, and with weights on his feet (which he doesn't recommend!). The disc is indexed into 33 sections, with titles like "How It All Started", "The Single Stroke Roll", "The Wrists", "The Respiration", "MDK", "The Memory Of Things...", "The Obsessive Music", "Before The Stroke", and "Striving For Ascension". Intercut with the interview segments, Vander provides many drumming demonstrations, shot from various camera angles, and sometimes repeated in slow-motion for clarity. Of course, he does some pretty amazing stuff. If you love drum solos, this is for you! (And connoisseurs of "drummer faces" will certainly find much to amuse them here -- Vander definitely gets into a "possessed" mode when he's doing his thing on the kit.) Probably essential for any Magma fans who are also drummers. Heck, for drummers who've never heard of Magma too. But non-drummer Magma fans should also find this interesting and enlightening, as it reveals a lot about one of the major elements of Magma that makes them such an incredible band. More then almost any other band in rock history the Velvet Underground lent themselves to mystery, mystique, and endless trivia, hence the market for a dvd like this one. This documentary takes a look at the band's history starting from their early collaborations with Andy Warhol including the debut record with Nico. Moe Tucker (whose earnest recolections serve as the most interesting part of the movie) and Doug Yule (who replaced John Cale after White Light White Heat) are the two band members interviewed as well as numerous journalists, label folk, and other VU experts...
The world of Jim Woodring's Frank is so fantastic and bizarre, so fully yet still mysteriously rendered, it would seem impossible to explore that world any further. And the thought of letting various filmmakers animate Frank and his world seems practically sacreligious. We had the same feeling before we watched the Henry Darger documentary as we'd heard that the fimmaker chose to animate Darger's Vivian GIrls and the mysterious Realm Of The Unreal. The result however was absolutely stunning, taking Darger's dreamlike vision even further, rendering the characters even more magical and mysterious, and his personal fantasy world so beautiful and haunting. Thankfully, the same is true of this collection of animated Frank films. Frank's world is so perfect as it is, that the mere thought of other people changing it or ruining it, compromising Woodring's vision, definitely seemed like too big a risk, but this handful of Japanese animators are obviously as in love with Frank as Woodring is and manage to take us further into Frank's world, allowing us to see things not visible on the printed page. Utilizing all sorts of techniques, haunting, sepia toned, water colored, parchment animation and cool angular black and white construction paper 3-D animation cut out's and fuzzy scratchy old fashioned film reels, like early Disney shorts and amazing children's book style geometric shapes with bright colored cutouts and stop motion claymation and bizarre 3-D computer animation, all done with such obvious love and reverence for the original comics, that this series of short films almost manages to be more wonderfully fantastical that the comics themselves. Even the introductory short in simple black and white, pen and ink (with music performed live by Bill Frisell) is a total trip. Always fun and wild and whimsical, with a bit of ominous mystery and usually some terrifying monsters, that somehow always seem to either be outsmarted by Frank and his pals or turn from foes into friends. Amazing music throughout as well as some extra music from Yo La Tengo's James McNew.
Comes packaged in an amazing diecut oversized DVD sleeve, with a big booklet packed with Frank comics as well as notes about the animators and the musicians. As Voivod fans mourn the loss of guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour (who sadly passed away earlier this year, a victim of cancer), they can take bittersweet enjoyment in this new DVD that collects video footage from the pioneering Quebecois sci-fi metal band's earlier years from 1983-1991, when they progressed from playing the rawest thrash you'll ever hear to levels of technical, psychedelic genius previously unheard in metal. This is the classic era of the original line-up of Piggy, Snake, Away and Blacky. You get all their '80s videos (six of 'em, including "Tribal Convictions" and their cover of Pink Floyd's "Astronomy Domine"), plus seven live tracks from shows in Montreal between '86 and '91, as well as some behind the scenes stuff from video shoots and in the studio recording the Nothingface album. And there's extras as well: artwork, photos, and demos. It would seem that this is essential to any serious Voivod aficionado!

Wow! This is one heckuva fan pleasin' dvd. It really is packed oh so generously with all you really do want! Over three hours worth of Rufus! Where do we start? Well, there's a frank and intimate documentary about Wainwright's life story thus far, there's a baker's dozen wonderful live performances, four music videos, some Wainwrights' home video footage, a bunch of interviews with Rufus, his family (sister Martha and mom Kate McGarrigle) as well as with a number of his celebrity fans such as Elton John and Sting. And the cherry on top? A spiffy new song titled "The Maker Makes". Whew! Need we say more?
In case you're a Wedding Present completist who missed 'em when they were originally released as imports over the last coupla years OR in case you're a bit of a neat freak who wants everything in one tidy package, here's a cd/dvd set of U.K. singles (released on the band's own label Scopitones) and videos from 2004 and 2005. Eleven of the fourteen songs were previously unreleased in the U.S., and three of the six videos were previously unavailable anywhere!
Who doesn't love alt-country songstress Gillian Welch and her musical partner David Rawlings? I kinda feel sorry for you if you don't. Anyway, chances are you're a fan, it seems most AQ-customers are. And fans should be pretty happy with this release, a DVD featuring the three videos shot for Welch's last release "Time (The Revelator)", plus nine songs filmed live in concert last year, five of which don't appear on any of Welch's albums! It's about an hour's worth of music total, and best of all -- it's in black and white! That's just perfect. Welch and Rawlings are wonderful live performers, so charming and funny that they make what they do seem easy, when of course it's not. Rawlings' impressive guitar solos, the duo's lovely vocal harmonies, Welch's brilliant lyrics...so good. See 'em live if you can -- checking out this DVD should definitely inspire you to do so. If it's not too early to start thinking about Christmas gifts, this seems like an idea...

Following the growing trend of recent albums being reissued with bonus material (dvds, videos, extra tracks, etc), V2 offers up a new run of the White Stripes' third album with a bonus dvd. Why? Because V2 are nice, generous folks? To extend the life of a popular album a little longer? Hmmm. Regardless, fans of Meg and Jack, here for you is the White Blood Cells cd with a dvd containing two "previously unreleased" extra tracks (actually they should instead be called "rare" 'cuz one of the songs "Lafayette Blues" was actually previously released and re-released on a 7", while the other "Hand Springs" was also formerly available on 7" and a compilation - I guess V2 didn't consider those to be officially "released") and four videos ("Hotel Yorba", "Fell In Love With A Girl", Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground", and "We're Going To Be Friends"). As for the album itself here's what we had to say about it last year when it was initially released:
People love 'em and Jack White's certainly got a great voice, and he's a lot less annoying and attitudinal than his contemporary-in-sound Jon Spencer, but I think I'm missing something here. Or maybe not. Upon listening to "White Blood Cells" (their hotly awaited third album) I put aside any preconceived opinion of how I thought I was supposed to react to the music and realized that it isn't the songwriting (good, garagey Detroit-style stomp) so much as it is the Iggy-tastic enthusiasm and love of making music that makes the White Stripes incredible. And I think it shows, just listen to the music -- it's not bad, but not the second coming either, but it definitely rocks. It makes you want to drink beer and fuck shit up. Just like rock n' roll should.
Not to be missed! Cup was absolutely devastated (in the best possible way!) and seriously moved to tears by this release! Heck, she's been at such a loss for words that it's taken her months to complete this review! This fabulous double dvd set's documentary and live performance present Wilson as the true musical genius he is, situating him alongside other great composers such as George Gershwin, Burt Bacharach and Cole Porter... although he truly belongs in a category all his own. If you have even an inkling of the journey this album and its creator have taken to get to this point (far too lengthy and involved to go into here -- you'll have to do your own Smile studying), it's nearly unfathomable that it should exist at all. To hear and see it all come to life is nothing short of a joyous experience. The live show was performed, recorded, filmed and edited beautifully. It looks and sounds fantastic! In fact, we'd definitely recommend experiencing the work known as Smile via the live performance on this dvd over listening to the studio album which was recorded in some very controlled, self-aware circumstances -- obviously a process of facing long-stored demons and finding closure to a work long unrealized -- and thus it comes across as somewhat stiff when held in comparison to the original Beach Boys' versions which were also much more wild and untethered... all understandably so. That said, Wilson has repeatedly stressed that this incarnation of Smile wasn't intended to be the same album he set out to do back then, that although it has pieces from his past, it's something very different to be taken on its own. The documentary is suitably reverential with remarkably well selected interview subjects (musicians, producers, peers and friends, themselves real artists, not simply celebrity talking heads) including Van Dyke Parks, Elvis Costello, Rob Reiner, Roger Daltrey, Jeff Bridges and George Martin. No folks, it's by no means an overstatement to say that this is a phenomenal triumph. As much as we may extoll the virtues of Wire, Dome, He Said, and any / all other Wire side projects, those albums would have never seen the light of day had Wire not released the ultra classics Pink Flag, Chairs Missing, and 154. Infinitely smarter than the Sex Pistols and not as gloomy as Joy Division, Wire initially appeared as a bright 3-chord punk band on Pink Flag, but quickly authored the template of a post-punk ethos that moved beyond simple rock structures and orchestration on Chairs Missing and 154. As distinct as each of those album are, Wire connected the dots with a very strong signature that they didn't really exhaust until the early '90s. While the latest reincarnation of Wire has boasted a return to their early glory, we haven't been entirely convinced.
Fortunately for big Wire fans like us, there's On The Box: 1979, a DVD / CD set of a live set that the band performed for the German television show Rockpalast. Recorded in between Chairs Missing and 154, the band was at that point experimenting with more obtuse songs; but given the live context and their apparant dissatisfaction with the rather placid and polite audience, the songs that would later appear on 154 (i.e. "The 15th" and "Map Ref. 41 N 93 W") have a definite edge that's not found on the studio recordings. For a live recording, this is as good as you'll find: great performance, tight and aggressive, great song selection, and good sound quality.
The DVD also features an interview in which the four are particularly difficult and curt to an increasingly confused journalist, and the CD just houses all of the audio from the show.
The Witch album that came out last year was, in our doom-lovin' opinion, one of the best Black Sabbath/'70s styled doom metal records we'd heard in a long time. And quite a surprise, considering that Witch is something of an unlikely "supergroup" -- including members of new weird folksters Feathers, and Dinosaur Jr. mainman J. Mascis, on drums!! Of course, Mascis is super busy now with the (equally unlikely but totally awesome) Dinosaur reunion, we know that our hankering for new material (or live dates out here in California) from Witch was probably gonna require some patience on our part. Fortunately, to keep us tided over 'til whenever that happens, there's this unexpected DVD documentary on Witch! With the great title "Local Band Nitemare", it's about 20 minutes long, shot on tour in in the Northeast, 2007 including both live performance and interview footage... join Witch on the road, in the van, backstage, in the hotel. Hijinks ensue, sort of. Some of it is actually funny, maybe just 'cause it's J. Mascis there in his long grey hair and glasses... and the live bits will serve to remind you how this multigenerational band of longhairs are almighty masters of the swingin' doom RIFF, in the tradition of Sabbath, Saint Vitus, Sleep, Dead Meadow, and even the Flower Travellin' Band. Also included in addition to Local Band Nitemare: the psychedelic-visual-effects overloaded promo video for the track "Seer" (check out J. spinning those sticks!), a special full live rendition of "Isadora" from their very first show, and also an art/photo gallery feature. So, if you like Witch as much as we do, you'll be pretty stoked on this. If you haven't checked Witch out yet, well we urge you to pick up their self-titled debut if what we said about 'em above has interested you at all!
NB. the band originally released this themselves on dvd-r, wrapped in just a xeroxed paper sleeve, but this new version on Tee Pee is a real dvd, packaged in a normal dvd case, done up all pro-like.
It seems like not a week goes by without a new Wooden Wand release making its unorthodox folk presence felt. Up until now it's all been of the audio variety, but this week we've got something you can listen to AND watch! Moon Void Of Course is a self-released LIMITED TO 100 dvd-r packed with tons of WWATVV goodies and extras. The focal point of the release is a bunch of on the road live footage from their summer tour of 2005, but there's also a couple of music videos and footage from a particularly unconventional show they did at an orphanage earlier that year. To boot, along with the dvd-r you get a soundtrack cd-r and a lil' tour diary/insert booklet.

The latest from Sublime Frequencies is a massive cd/dvd/book set, compiled by photographer/filmmaker Olivia Wyatt on a recent trip to Ethiopia, planned to coincide with a music festival - which the government abruptly cancelled for fear of the musicians being exploited. So instead, Wyatt travelled into the bush, to compile this sonic/visual travelogue of the music and musicians, the people and places of the various tribes of Ethiopia, and it's of course breathtaking. The music, heady and hypnotic, joyous and emotional, the sounds varying dramatically from tribe to tribe, but music being ubiquitous, weddings, ceremonies, rituals, drawing water from the well, on television, in living rooms, very rhythmic, mostly vocal drive, but with lots of hand clapping, wildly bowed stringed instruments, vocals chanted, shouted, call and response, super mesmerizing, many of the tribes utilize whistles and panpipes, and the music they make is incredible, otherworldly and impossibly lush, sounding like some modern 20th century classical composition in many cases, while actual bands to rock out, and get surprisingly soulful and funky. A compilation like this must have been so impossible to compile, how on earth to whittle down what must have ben days of recordings to just an hour, but the tracks chosen are amazing, and make us want to hear so much more.
Both the cd and the dvd (more on the dvd in a second) are housed in a cd sized hard cover book, which includes extensive liner notes on Wyatt's trip to Ethiopia, but also 117 Polaroid photos Wyatt took on her trip, of people, places, musicians, villages, an incredible visual feast for the eyes. And then there's the dvd, which features a 60 minute film, which in its won way is structured like the video version of Wyatt's Polaroids, with many still shots, video portraits, as well as some incredible footage, some highlights include so many different lots of singing and dancing, sometimes in traditional tribal dress, often in western t-shirts and shorts, one of the most amazing sequences if of men and women working drawing water from a well, passing buckets from person to person, their worksongs so hypnotic and beautiful, then there's a super wild psychedelic guitar freakout with one woman doing some of the craziest, most ecstatic hair swirling / headbanging we've ever seen, there's footage of men feeding wild hyenas in the middle of the night, often right out of their own mouths, snippets from Ethiopian television with wild MTV style videos, fantastic tribal folks songs with synchronized dances and lots of whistles, dancing girls making music with just the clank and jangle of her jewelry, in fact lots of dances that involve the jangle of jewelry, men smoking in dark rooms watching television, intimate performances in living rooms and so much more.
So incredible, sonically, visually, culturally, easily one of our favorite Sublime Frequencies releases for sure.

Back In Print!!!! The Source book was awesome, but before that, there was this dvd, you need it too...
If you're at all like us, you're a fan of the Ya Ho Wha 13 records. big fans don't know much more than that the Yah Ho Wha 13 was a band that belonged to a '70s hippy religious commune (some would say, a "cult") known then as the Brotherhood Of The Source and now as the Source Family, that was based in California (and later, Hawaii), led by a fellow named Father Yod, who eventually perished in a hang-gliding accident. Pretty mysterious really. And if you're like us you're curious about the folks who made all that weird music. Well, now you can learn the rest of the story from this DVD documentary. And it's a long story -- about two and a half hours. Very entertaining though. In part 'cause the actual facts are so strange, in part 'cause the interviewees are really rather charming... and in part 'cause this was a student film project. The filmmaking isn't so much amateur or low budget as it is simply bizarre. It fits with the subject though!! The young filmmaker himself sometimes appears on-screen, hosting the proceedings. A lot of the time, he has the back of his head to the camera, superimposed Mystery Science Theatre 3000 style over whatever he's discussing. Weird. And he really tries to generate a "psychedelic" mood with the use of computer animations and the overlaying of multiple video images. It's a pretty darn trippy movie he's made. But once you're used to it, you'll be able to focus on what the former "Family" members are talking about in the interviews. You'll learn that Father Yod's real name was Jim Baker. And that supposedly he was an Olympic athlete and WWII hero. Well, that's what his former followers still think. Further viewing will reveal how Tarzan, salad dressing, Jodie Foster's dad, and the Egyptian pyramids, among many other things, all play parts in the story... And don't worry, in addition to the present-day interviews, this makes use of all sorts of vintage footage and photos, both "home movies" and what appears to be a local Los Angeles TV news feature on the Father Yod and his followers from back in the day.
In a lot of ways, this film is basically a case study in how to start and run a cult. In Jim Baker/Father Yod's case, the idea is to become an esoteric-wisdom-spouting father figure to a group of "lost" youths (it's helpful if there happens to be a whole hippie generation running around looking for spiritual enlightenment and belonging). And get them all working at your successful health-food restaurant, to make money to pay for Rolls Royces, mansions, and nice suits. And have amazing hair! (The sequence where one former Family member describes the colors and texture of Father Yod's hair is really intense!) For instance, would-be cult leaders probably are curious to know just how Father Yod wound up with so many attractive young "wives"? Well, he taught his flock that women were god-creatures, creative spirits who should be utterly liberated and free to choose their partners as they wished. If a man was chosen, he should accept the attentions of the woman gratefully, no matter what. Now, could Father Yod help it if many of the women in the Family chose him, leaving many of his male "children" without partners? No, he could not.
An interest in cults, gurus and sixties spirituality aside, despite the fact that the Ya Ho Wha 13's music (which you'll hear throughout the film) doesn't really get discussed much until about an hour and a half into the movie (and Djin Aquarian, the guitarist in the band, isn't talked to for some reason, though you can find a fascinating 2003 interview with him online here: http://www.nicepooperzine.com/interviews.html, and of course he's in the Source book), this is still pretty much essential for any fan of Father Yod & Co.'s musical endeavors. For anyone who bought the Zadik Zecharia cd (and that's a WHOLE lot of you), an amazing disc of wild and energetic performances on a small traditional Kurdish horn called a zorna, a disc that is STILL played constantly in the store, this dvd-r is absolutely essential. The sound of the zorna is a buzzing high end hypnotic buzz, very much like snake charmer music, and is completely and relentlessly mesmerizing. A sound that is wild and festive and joyous, and that definitely has a primal power, a timeless intensity that transcends mere music, it's a sound that does in fact force your body to bounce and shimmy, dance and shake along. As is evidenced by this dvd-r, a home video recording of a wedding in 1987 that is just a nonstop dance party / zorna jam. It's a little strange to see, it's a little like watching some stranger's home videos, which it basically is. But wow!! If only weddings were this wild and festive in the US. Then again, if only weddings featured a kick ass zorna jam courtesy of Zadik Zecharia (maybe Andee and Heather would have actually gotten married by now). From the moment the bride and groom enter the building, Zecharia is playing a continuous stream of flowing buzzing melody, never stopping, accompanied by a huge thumped drum, and of course the clapping and shouting of the crowd. And that's basically it, a huge crowd of friends and family, dancing wildly, together, separately, in big groups, holding hands, forming huge chains, hands raised in the air, while Zecharia and the drummer, wander from the stage, strolling amongst the crowd and back to the stage again never letting up. In fact there are even some parts where Zecharia plays with one hand so he can use his other to communicate with some of the guests. A few folks whisper in his ear, to which he responds with a nod or a smile, still never letting the music stop. It's 1987 so there are some amazing fashions, wild pantsuits and big hair, which are fun to see, but it's all about Zecharia and his inspiring performance.
Shot on a camcorder 20 years ago, which means the picture quality is not the best, but the sound is fantastic (minus a few drop outs) and if you're anything like us you can't get enough of Zadik Zecharia and his zorna!! So recommended!

In the age of YouTube and MySpace, the idea of the music video has changed dramatically since the days of MTV (or at least the days when MTV actually played videos). In the past, only bands on major labels could make a video, often hiring a real director and dropping hundreds of thousands of dollars. Now, plenty of bands have videos before they even have a record out. Super 8, digital video, Final Cut Pro, anyone can put together their own video and have it look as good if not better than the classic videos of old.
Old news maybe, but the thing is, most bands seems to use the video as simply a promotional tactic, or an excuse to fuck around and film it. Instead of, dare we say, ART. In the underground though, it's not at all uncommon for like minded musicians and filmmakers to join forces. In fact, with the advent of live performances featuring laptops and other sedimentary sound making devices (when is someone gonna make a laptop guitar, so left out laptoppers can windmill and leap about with the rest of the band?), often it's the accompanying films that are way more compelling. Often, a show is touted as some band performing "with films by so and so", but in fact, more often than not, it plays out more like seeing a film, that just so happens to feature live accompaniment by some band.
Few labels have really taken advantage of this new technology as much as Root Strata, who have quietly and steadily been releasing a series of super limited dvd-r's, each featuring new compositions by a small handful of artists, coupled with original films. The results have been pretty sublime, the films tending toward the abstract and impressionistic, the music following suit. When watching / listening to these, it's hard not to imagine laying on the floor, propped up on cushions, lights low, the film being projected on a huge blank wall, the band hunkered over their instruments in the corner, which makes sense as that's most likely how these films/sounds were conceived.�
So we have two new super limited dvd-r releases, one from Zelienople and one from Jefre Cantu-Ledesma and Paul Clipson, both limited to 100 copies, both already out of print, so these are the only copies we'll ever get.�
We've only ever had one other release by Zelienople in the past, the gorgeous Stone Academy. A smoldering noise drenched folk, simple strum surrounded thick sonic swells, tons of effects, often evolving into a blown out druggy haze. The music here is similar, but a bit more post rocky, a little Velvets, a little Bohren. A simple main riff, repeating over and over, wreathed in reverb, the vocals a hushed plaintive murmur, while all around, those elements, softly swirl, streaks of blurred effects, spidery reverbed guitar melodies, all heavy with reverb and delay, the sound super laid back and weary, dreamlike and drowsy. Which perfectly suits the visuals, a film by Donald Prokop (and the band), an endless shot of the world passing by outside a car window. In the first half, the various sights are rendered an impressionistic blur, long streaks, fields of color vibrating, whirring past, sometimes the screen is mostly sky, peppered with glimmering streetlights, but often it's a a jittery assemblage of shapes and colors and lights, here and there, more of the landscape is revealed, eliciting a strange sense of melancholy, of loneliness, enhanced by Zelienople's moody musical drift. Near the end, the camera seems to be traveling through a series of tunnels, the film offering up long stretches of blackness between smeared glass views of passing towns. So lovely.�
