Sabiston is an ex-member of Axolotl, and records under the name Ball Lightning, we had a totally kick ass cd-r from BL a while back. A mindblowingly inventive percussionist, Sabiston is also a pretty amazing video artist as well. This ultra limited 3" dvd-r features three short films, each one in glorious super lo-res black and white, filmed using a Pixelvision camera, one of those failed toys that became a prized possession for those who could find 'em. The Pixelvision uses regular old cassette audio tapes to capture super lo-fi video, high contrast black and white, very creepy and beautiful and alien looking. It's like watching an ultrasound, weird shapes stutter and jump, lines move, static drifts and wiggles, sort of like video feedback, but even more simple and abstract. So gorgeous and haunting. Each film features original music from Sabiston, a swirling fuzzscape of sound, stuttery glitchy skitter flitting over deep rumbling bass thrum, while buried within are soft snippets of looped melody, everything occasionally blissing out into dubbed out pulses and cavernous low end throbs. We've been getting more and more tired of electronic music recently. How could you not? It seems that every week there's a hundred more glitchy wannabe Autechres or Aphex Twins. But thankfully, there are always groups of folks, quietly doing their own thing, thinking weird thoughts and making weird sounds, turning unlikely concepts into reality, and offering us amazing alternatives to the usual crap we are forced to sift through day after day. Thus we have Sagan. With a pedigree that would have us expecting no less. Jay Lesser, Bevin Blectum, Wobbly, fim maker Ryan Junell, and the label run by Drew And Martin of Matmos. You'd almost find yourself shouting 'supergroup' if yo didn't know that such behavior would get you a punch in the nose. A massive concept album based on Carl Sagan and just good 'ol science in general, Unseen Forces is a heaping sensory overload of sonic irregularites and visual fuckery. The audio disc is a lot more listenable that you might expect from audio terrorists like Lesser and Blectum. It's a far spacier affair, channelling classic Tangerine Dream, Pink Floyd swoosh, Hawkwind spaciness, as well as modern glitch into a slowly swirling galaxy of shimmery synths, and stuttering starbursts, throbbing techno broadcast from a distant galaxy, and garbled through the light years into a smeary ambient blur, demarcated by chirps and clicks, thumps and throbs. A space opera for the IDM set. We were a bit wary of the accompanying film, fearing at best, some sort of cool music videos, and at worst, home movies of band members mugging and acting silly. Well, somehow it's actually both, but the sum of those parts is infinitely more watchable than you might think and so completely compliments Sagan's techno space glitch swirl. So much so that after watching the film, every time we listen to the record now, all we can picture is the scenes from the film! Various historical scientific discoveries and encounters are fictionalized and re-enacted by the band members as well as the guys from Matmos and AQ pal Dave Cerf. Gorgeously filmed and masterfully edited, the grainy Viewmaster menus and segues perfectly balance the silent movie feel of the vignettes, with the action skipping and hiccupping to the music. Funny and fascinating, silly but emminently watchable. Also the opening sequence and the closing credits are AMAZING looking. This record and film have been in the works for a LONG time, but we are happy to report that the wait was worth it! Also, the hybrid DVD contains 9 shows with over 6 hours of music!

Saint Vitus! In the doom metal pantheon, this '80s SoCal band is waaay up there, in the select group of second-gen Sabbath disciples that also includes Pentagram, Trouble, Witchfinder General, and Candlemass. Originally recording for SST, they were the throwback doom punk hippies of the hardcore scene. Hence such tunes as "Born Too Late". All of this, you should already know, and if not, there's little point in reading further about this release. 'Cause basically this item is something for true Vitus fans, those among you who know (and care) what we're talking about when we say that Andee and Allan here have a ongoing dispute about who was the best Vitus vocalist, Scott Reagers or his replacement, Scott "Wino" Weinrich. Extra points if you chime in, "what about Christian Lindersson?" If you yourself have formed an opinion on that subject (and particularly if you're a Wino fancier) then there's a good chance you'll want this DVD document of the legendary St. Vitus reunited (Dave Chandler, Armando Acosta, and Mark Adams, with Wino at the mic), live for one show only at the Double Door in Chicago, 2003. Billed as "the heaviest show ever" and well it's freaking Saint Vitus, they can say that if they want! Ok, what else do you need to know? It's limited and numbered, it's an official release, it's a real DVD not DVD-R, it's a pro production (done by the Doomednation folks) shot on four cameras (which allow for some crazy close-ups and a diversity of "film stock"). The sound is decent, though it's also almost -too much- like you're actually at the show 'cause of all the crowd chatter you can hear. And here's the set list: "Clear Windowpane", "Dying Inside", "White Magic/Black Magic", "Living Backwards", "I Bleed Black", "Zombie Hunger", "White Stallions", "Born Too Late", "Mystic Lady", and "Saint Vitus"! Right from the get-go it's obvious how Dave Chandler's frazzled, fuzzed wah-wah soloing makes Vitus sound so unique. Yeah they're hugely influenced by Black Sabbath. Wino gets as Ozzy as he can be. But there's something even more burnt out and deviant and, well, punk about the Vitus approach... and Dave Chandler's psychotic, psychedelic guitar playing (and personality) is a big part of that. Hell we're AMAZED that the dude still looks exactly the same -- imagine having that fabulous furry freak brothers frizzy long hair for all those years!! Much like the equally amazing Cramps Live At Napa State Mental Hospital video, for years this live footage of the Screamers' seminal synth-punk action has been circulating in increasingly grainy, on the verge of disintegrating VHS copies. A couple years after making its rounds of the indie film fest circuits (heck, we've had the soundtrack for ages!), Jon Moritsugu's latest film Scumrock is finally available on dvd!!! As we mentioned in the cd's review, the film revolves around the tangled struggles of indie filmmakers and indie bands. It features many AQ-familiar faces including a pre-TV On The Radio Kyp Malone in one of the lead roles, Moritsugu's partner in crime and awesome illustrator Amy Davis, I Am Spoonbender's Dustin Donaldson as the bad-ass Church, fellow filmmakers Craig Baldwin and Danny Plotnick, J-Church's Lance Hahn and our own Cup as eager film students, and let's not forget Windy's ol' Trans Am! Oh, and there's James Duval (aka Donnie Darko's Frank aka the freaky bunny) too. Plus music by Casiotone For The Painfully Alone, J-Church, and Moritsugu and Davis' band Toni-Ann. Have we missed anyone? Unflinchingly dedicated to keepin' it raw 'n' real, this renegade indie filmmaker keeps on keepin' on and critics and kids continue to shower him the accolades. Scumrock received some very high honors and hip cred including 'Best Feature' at both the Chicago and New York Underground Film Festivals and one of the Village Voice film critics' pick of 2003. Isn't it astounding that DJ Shadow is still milking the accolades of his stellar, career-highpoint debut from six years ago? And we don't mean to belabour the subject but... how's this for obnoxious? On the introduction to this new live cd/dvd, DJ Shadow gives a thorough 'shout-out' NOT to his fans and homies, but instead to all of his releases... including eps and comp tracks! Ack, unbelievable! Aah, 'tis such a love/hate relationship! Alright, now that we've got that out of our system... In Tune And On Time is comprised of a 20-track cd documenting his 2002 performance at the London Brixton Academy and a dvd with that very same performance (expanded to include a couple extra tracks) as well as an additional invigorating performance in L.A. (which also stars his pals Cut Chemist and DJ Nu-Mark of Jurassic 5), an interview and other candid footage. Good stuff. It always is. But how many times do you really need to hear the same old songs, especially live? They're not ever all that different, after all he's not a band, he's a DJ, playing records. But if you want more Shadow, this will have to suffice, at least until he gets around to making another record as good as Endtroducing.

Not sure how much needs to be said about this. An awesome live film of Cut Chemist and DJ Shadow performing their legendary all-45 Brainfreeze set. Really fun and crazy and just a total blast. Also included are excerpts of the opening sets by Marvski, Dante, Nu-Mark and a really funny, amazingly dexterous set from Z-Trip. Extras include rehearsals, photo galleries and discographies. Not sure how long we're gonna have these so act fast! And for our international customers, it's all region!

DJ Disk brought this in the other day, a dvd (or dvd-r, we're pretty sure, it's blue on the playing side, whatever that means) version of this video document of the infamous Invisible Skratch Picklz, originally released on VHS ten years ago. Disk, Q-bert, Flare, Shortkut, and the devilish brown-bag masked Shiggar Fraggar himself skritch-skritch-scratch the hell out of a bunch of vinyl on an array of turntables, in a crazed DJ jam session. It's pretty amazing to see them do this live, even today. Indeed, it's what Time Magazine (TIME MAGAZINE!) called "the greatest turntable scratch show ever created". When Brentley of SF's finest nerd-rock band Three Day Stubble brought these homespun dvds into AQ, he recommended wearing a diaper while viewing it -- i.e, 'cuz you're gonna shit yerself laughin'! The dvd is divided into five chapters that span fifteen years, and each one offers a home video glimpse into the life of the lad who calls himself Mark Shit. And we can tell you he was one intense kid! Sometimes hyper, sometimes bratty, often punk as fuck, but always completely focused on the video camera. In our opinion, the high point musically is the second chapter named TDRtones Session -- intentionally or not, it features a claustrophobic performance of some pretty great, tightly wound propulsive post-punk. Songs include "Spratley Went To The Bathroom", "She Didn't Know I Was A Midget", "Gah Gah's Coming Out" and an odd very Hendrix-icated "Star Spangled Banner". The low point in every sense is the 'reunion'. You'll have to see for yourself.

NOW ON VINYL!!! Up until now Sigur Ros has not really been a band we'd associate with wordiness, with spontaneity or with bare flesh. They surprise us with a mouthful of an album title and an eyeful of an album cover. The music as well has floored us -- startlingly different from the trademark blissed out Icelandic grandeur of their previous four full lengths. Nothing tooo drastic, mind you, but Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust refreshes both the band and the listener with songs that are somehow at once both rawer'n'heavier and warmer'n'lighter. Instead of end-to-end waves of dreamy blanketing embraces, there are also moments of bracing starkness and (dare we say?) exuberant immediacy. The combination builds to a (yes, epic!) centerpiece number "Ara Batur" which apparently was recorded in one take and features ninety performers including the London Oratory Boys Choir and the London Sinfonietta orchestra. Whoa, stunning! it's easy to see why they chose to doff their clothing for this one!

Here's an unbeatably splendid Sigur Ros deal -- a dvd and a cdep for less than eleven dollars! Musically there aren't any surprises... but who needs surprises? They stick with their tried and true which is simply more of their gorgeous crystalline elegant atmospheres we know and love. The title track is taken from their most recent full length Takk and the other three songs are new new new! Visually it's nothing short of Sigur Ros-ian shivering sumptuousness -- three breathtaking videos for "Saeglopur", "Glosoli" and "Hoppipolla". Oh la la!

Faithful indie rockers knew that prior to 2006 there wasn't a hope in hell that they'd be seeing one of their favorite bands live in concert. Silver Jews' team captain David Berman chose to keep it that way, much to his fans despair. So, why the change of heart after fifteen long years? We've no idea, and we choose not to pry, but the band hit the road, and how! They toured right across the country and around the globe. This dvd doesn't document the entire trip, but heck, we've all seen tons of footage of bands on the road, right? The grueling, the touching, the hilarious, the ho hum, etc., etc. Instead filmmaker Michael Tully chose to focus on one particular stop in the band's travels, the distant land of Tel Aviv, Israel. The film does include a few clips of the band performing live, but more so, it resonates with the profound intimate impact the visit had on Berman. A must-see for any Silver Jews fan!

Although the centerpiece of this new Siouxsie & The Banshees dvd is the composite live concert footage from two nights at the Royal Albert Hall back in 1983, arguably the best parts are in the extras. The band's self-produced 'tv show' with performances by The Banshees, The Creatures and The Glove is a delight -- particularly the individual Banshee's distinct segments in which Siouxsie, Budgie, Steve Severin and Robert Smith each recite a spoken word piece in his/her chosen setting -- and the Old Grey Whistle Test tv footage which show the band in top form doing "Melt!" and "Painted Bird". Oh and the main concert footage is pretty great too. A definite fan pleaser!

Sixteen Horsepower are the masters of apocalyptic swamp folk, a dark and dolorous bluegrass infused with fire and brimstone, tales of Biblical damnation, and spiritual salvation, set to fiddle and accordion, banjo and mandolin, lit by a cresent moon and the dying embers of a campfire, delivered with the vitriol fury of a rivivalist preacher trying desperately to save our souls. Sixteen Horsepower (along with 16HP frontman David Eugene Edwards' side project Woven Hand) have been responsible for some of our favorite records of the last few years. The above description should tell you enough to know that these guys push all our buttons. So we were pretty excited to get this double DVD. The first, is a series of interviews, one a super arty, black and white, with the band by the railroad, among creepy mannequins, beautifully edited and gorgeously shot. The second is a standard sit down interview. The third is interviews with the various band members tracing the timeline of the band. All very interesting, especially to hear Edwards speak so unabashedly about his faith and growing up in the church. All evident in the music of 16HP but still sort of cool to hear explained in greater detail. Disc two is all the videos and some live footage. The videos, if you haven't already seen them, are perfect visual representations of the band's take on the dusty road to damnation, lots of grainy shots of desert, and leafless trees, plenty of high contrast black and white. The highlight being the 16HP video directed by the none other than the Brothers Quay, with animated white and black chalk in some alien battle between light and dark, good and evil, as a backdrop to the band performing!! Never having seen the band, the live footage was amazing. And they are just as intense live as you might imagine. And finally on disc 2 is a European behind the scenes documentary following the band around on tour, lots of backstage footage, travelling, soundchecks, and all that kind of stuff. Intimate and really interesting. This whole collection is a welcome glimpse into the minds and music of one of our favorite bands, which is especially exciting since in the past 16HP have been less than gregarious and hardly forthcoming in terms of interviews and such.

Lots of bands can 'rock' live, performing their record, their set, a little bit louder, a little bit wilder, a little more shambolic, feeding off the energy of the crowd, but rare is the band who can create a mood, evoke emotions, make standing in a smoky club feel like standing knee deep in the mud, in a swamp, watching the black night sky, thinking back over your life and just waiting' around to die. The music of 16 Horsepower is like that, a swampy backwoods bluegrass, hellfire and brimstone, Biblical damnation and spiritual salvation. A creepy campfire blues steeped in haunting late night misery and rainy day malaise. Banjos, and double basses, accordions and brushed drums, and the haunting soulful vocals of David Eugene Edwards. On record, closed eyes and open ears reveal a world long gone, preachers in tents set up in muddy fields, beat up old pick ups, the open road, the wrath of God and the loneliness of existence, all revealed through the slow slinky crawl of 16HP's funeral folk dirge, a murky gloomy beauty that is hard to describe. Live it's like watching a band possessed. Edwards grimaces and grits, strains and clenches, the accordion, banjo or bowed guitar like a serpent in his hands as he testifies, and tries to save our souls. This dvd conveys all the power and mystery of 16HP live. Disc one features a live show from 2002 in its entirety, recorded at Le Cirque Royal in Belgium, the sound is dark and dolorous, the stage set up is the same, dark and muted, Edwards up front bathed in a halo of muted yellow light, with soft blue light on the rest of the players, each in their own little corner, all summoning personal demons and exorcising them right there on stage. SO totally amazing. Disc two features a handful of odds and ends. A live performance on German television show Rockpalast, complete with cheesy intro music and eighties neon logo, but a fiery and super intense set, the band possessed and inspired. Also a cool six minute montage of footage from their last tour, live performances, radio interviews, backstage, in the van, etc. as well as some footage of the band in their practice space rehearsing for their final tour. And maybe the most moving, live footage from a show in Antwerp, Belgium, intended for a documentary, but never used as that ended up being the band's last show ever. A handful of songs played in a cool dome-like outdoor amphitheater, with a strange fountain, right in front of the stage that sends up a tiny jets of water. A handful of songs, including a cover of "Heart And Soul" by Joy Division, which is the last song 16 Horsepower ever perform. Comes with a big booklet of liner notes/photos. This disc is NTSC and region free.

We've long been champions of Mr. David Eugene Edwards, in both of his swampy apocalyptic folk ensembles, first the late great 16 Horsepower, and then later, his more personal, and seemingly more spiritual Woven Hand. As long time readers of the aQ list know, Edwards is like a modern day revivalist, conjuring up demons and darkness, death and pestilence, but simultaneously light and hope and sometimes even redemption. With a sound that shifts from stripped down and intimate, to dense and heavy and ominously rocking, the music of Edwards is easily some of the most powerful and passionate we've heard. Woven Hand played the aQuarius SXSW showcase, and our first impression was holy shit, these guys are HEAVY. And loud. And so intense. In fact, considering how many actual metal bands and super heavy rock bands played that showcase, it's pretty remarkable that WH might still have been the heaviest band in the lineup. Secret South is one of our favorite 16HP records, originally released way back in 2000, and out of print for AGES, this was their first record after leaving their major label, and thus seems to be infused with an extraordinary amount of anger and darkness. This record is FIERCE, the classic 16HP lineup is on fire, the vocals incredible and impassioned, the guitars raw and rough, the drumming powerful, the bass thick and enveloping, strings moaning and singing, but the magic of 16HP is how all those elements are woven together, it's difficult to imagine a mere band could evoke this sort of ominous atmosphere, this sort of dread and darkness, this is so much more than music, it's energy in sound, it's sweat and blood rendered in notes and melodies. A swampy mysterious gothic folk, but infused with elements of classic bluegrass, dramatic cabaret, plenty of doom and gloom... You can check the aQ site for other reviews where we rave on and on and on about both 16HP and Woven Hand, needless to say, both bands are all time favorites around here, and Secret South ranks right up there as one of the best by either. Both the cd version and the lp comes with a bonus dvd featuring the whole record in 5.1 surround sound DVD audio.

Okay, we don't really have a VCR here so no one has been able to actually watch this video, but judging from how freaky people have gotten about local free noise outfit the Skaters recently, we figured we oughta list it anyway, especially since we only managed to get 8 copies. As far as we know these are the last copies and then it's gone for good. Made for their recent tour, Diminishing Shrine Recycles is the perfect lo-fi visual analogue to the Skater's dense sonic skree. First come first serve. These will probably be gone in a heartbeat...

Since their split from DGC many moons ago, these Canadian boys' music has been next to impossible to get here. At long last, Koch has been able to bring their music back to our hungry ears. It's about time too! It's hard to know what to say about Sloan, they're one of those bands that just makes us want to scream "What do you mean why are they so great? I don't know, they just are!!! You need to buy all their records NOW!" Everyone here just loves their perfect pop so much. Equal parts crunchy guitars, Beach Boys like harmonies, impossibly catchy hooks, stumblingly chaotic drumming, perfect jangle and strum guitars. And then there's the fact that each member of Sloan takes turn singing, playing guitar, and playing bass. How many bands can you say that about?! And the thing is, they all completely kick ass at all three. And as you get familiar with the band you start identifying songs as a 'Jay song' or an 'Andrew song'. That's sort of the appeal, they are crack songsmiths, and most definitely rock stars (certainly in Canada) but at the same time they are so self effacing, dorky and lovable. Their music is totally earnest and over the top bombastic at the same time. Sometimes it shuffles along all moody and downcast, sometimes it's a blast of high energy RAWK, sometimes they'll whip out some full on Chicago horns. And it all sounds great, fitting perfectly into Sloan's perfect pop puzzle. The second half of this greatest hits packed less of that Sloan pop wallop we so hold dear and more of an arena rock flair (which is sort of the direction their records have been taking, but hell, we'd rather Sloan be rocking the stadium than Janet Jackson or Counting Crows!). If you somehow missed Sloan the first time around (or if you just plain miss them!), this singles compilation serves quite well as shorthand summary of their many albums (although Andee and Cup wish a few other choice cuts had been included). This is essential pop, power or otherwise. PLUS while supplies last you get a whole DVD of all of their videos, which are all totally fun and funny and wildly entertaining. Plus it's a blast to watch the band go through an impossible number of hairstyles over the years! Anyone who loves the Posies, Weezer, Jellyfish, Big Star, Silver Sun, the Fastbacks, Superchunk, the Stereo, Zumpano, the New Pornographers, Fallout Boy, the Get Up Kids or any of that stuff, who doesn't already have a big chunk of Sloan in their collection has a lot of catching up to do. This is as good a place as any to start!

SORRY. Now you can see Solex live (well, sorta!) for less than the price of admission! This new low-priced dvd features that delightful Dutch gal Elizabeth Esselink performing her funky, groovy collaged pop at Chicago's Empty Bottle club earlier this year!

We definitely love food, and eating, from shitty take out, to fancy pants high end dining. But we've never really found a cooking show we dug enough to watch regularly. One that spoke to us, regular dudes (and ladies) who like music, like to cook, but don't always want to spend hours making food, but do once in a while want to try something crazy. And while we're not sure Solid Dudes Kitchen speaks EXACTLY to us, it comes pretty damn close. It's funny, there's music, animation, and some killer food. Not to mention two likable dudes manning the kitchen. One guy cooks, the other watches and provides smart ass commentary. Which is probably a lot like lots of our kitchens. Plenty of swearing, jokes about balls, butts, farts, and other dude stuff. Both guys are tattooed and cool, used to play in rock bands, the key being, they're pretty funny, and seem like dudes you'd totally be into hanging out with and making dinner and drinking. And they do seem like out kind of dudes. For Superbowl Sunday, they make the least DUDE food possible, a beet salad, but moments later, they make pot brownies, the instructions delivered in a buzzing snarling metal / grindcore song. The next episode features the guitarist from the Dillinger Escape Plan, their pal, back from tour, and they're cooking him some comfort food, while said pal, straps on a guitar and rocks out in a computer generated hellish landscape, where he comments on each stage of the cooking, but wordlessly, just shredding wildly, subtitled of course, so you know what he's 'saying'. And that's another thing that makes Solid Dudes Kitchen so rad, some seriously high production values, the editing is amazing, the credits are different each time, super fancy, tons of animation, and variations of that stuff pop up throughout each episode. And if you weren't sold already, wait til you get to the episode where they make a bacon burger, but not just ANY bacon burger, a bacon burger in which EVERY element is some variation of pork, called the pork motherfucker. There's bacon, but there's also self brined ribs, there's bacon fat mayo (!), there's also pickled onions, braised pork belly, pancetta and ground pork and breadcrumb patties on toasted buns, with cheese. Mmmmmmmm. The episodes are short, so they're fun to watch, even if you don't want cook anything, although why wouldn't you? And after watching all these, we can't figure out why the heck these guys aren't Food Network superstars. Maybe it's all the metal and swearing and ass jokes...

Finally! Season two of Solid Dudes Kitchen, which for those of you who missed out on season one, is exactly what the title promises, a couple dudes, solid dudes obviously, in a kitchen. It's a cooking show. Sort of. But it's a cooking show that's more like hanging out with your tattooed metal obsessed pals, one of whom just happens to be a pretty serious chef, the other more of a wiseass and designated taster. They're both pretty funny, tell stupid jokes, make obscure rock references, drink heavily, and then cook and eat some seriously awesome looking food. But that's only part of it, they're also master graphic designers, and the production values are through the roof, even more than the first season, with each show featuring a wholly original credit sequence, opening AND closing, that is some of the most eye popping and visually pleasing graphics we've seen ever, whether it's the wooden fish in the opening to the sushi episode, or the backwards pouring cocktails that spell out the titles in one of the hangover episodes (can't remember if it's 'Hang' or 'Over'). This time around the dudes attend a wild backyard Jalapeno festival, they apprentice with a sushi chef (who's hilarious), they drink a LOT and learn all sorts of crazy cocktails, they cook up the perfect hangover food, they prepare the meal that they would pick if they had to pick one meal for the rest of their lives and more more more! Oh and did we mention the guitarist from the Dillinger Escape Plan returns as a sort of black metal greek chorus, with a wig, a legion of skeleton warriors, and a guitar that shoots rainbows. It's all pretty silly, but it's kind of a blast. It might be hard to make any of the recipes since they don't really do much instructing, but it's more about the vibe, if it looks good, you can fucking figure out how to make it yourself (so they might instruct!). Unruly and rude, and funny as fuck. The DVD includes a bunch of extra goodies, commentaries, trailers and other stuff. And we were actually inspired to make our own version of the O.M.F.T.R.O.Y.L (one meal for the rest of your life), which was some sort of heart stopping Monte Cristo. MMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Urgh...

SORRY. The title of this Sonic Youth dvd may say "The Videos", but it's so much more than a simple video compilation! This compiles all of their videos from 1990-2002, after they made the jump to the majors. The liner notes suggest a "pre-sellout" video compilation will follow, we're psyched to see that too. But this here DVD is chock full of all your favorites: "Dirty Boots", "Kool Thing", "Sugar Kane", "Youth Against Facism", "Bull In The Heather" and loads more. All with band and/or director commentaries. Bonus goodies include something called Sonic Spiel featuring Mike Watt, Jason Lee, Kathleen Hanna, Todd Hynes, Richard Kern and a bunch of other sonic pals. Also a Spike Jonze montage of his favortie SY memories, a fan letter film, and some secret extras. Pretty damn cool.

An introduction (for us, at least) into the collective mind's eye of these two Latvian electronic engineers who have been collaborating over the years in a rather magical cross-pollenation of abstract electronic, field recording, and live instrumentation. The conceptual thread that runs through the album is quite a literal one - a thin piece of wool that is wrapped around each of the modestly screen-printed albums ties to the field recordings made from an industrial loom in the former Soviet country. This same site is reprised on for several of the videos that are included in the nifty package of material. Sound Meccano (aka Rostislav Rekuta) and Droomoff situate their signal processed samples, crystalline ambience, and fractured digitalia as the building blocks for a luminous, rather organic form of electronica that readily incorporates all of the live instrumentation and site-specific recordings. "Unasculum Motus" enjoys a spiralling mantra of dream-time melody that wouldn't be out of place on Aphex's Selected Ambient Works Vol II amidst the various creaks, whirs, and clatter. The flutes on the pastoral tune "Air Metamirphoses" end up levitating towards the same vapor trail heard on Kraftwerk's early motorik masterpiece "Ruckzuck" (from one of those albums with the traffic cones on the cover). Elsewhere, the mechanoid, granular synthesis and rounded basstone pulsations recall the work of Vladislav Delay and the thoroughly abstracted facets of Moritz Von Oswald.

SORRY. NOW WITH BONUS DVD! Most of us had been on the fence about St. Vincent up until this point. We definitely appreciated that she had a nice voice, but her records always seemed a bit middling to us. It wasn't until Andee saw her play on a late night TV show, covering BIG BLACK (!!) and was totally blown away by her performance, that we decided to give this new record a close listen, and damn we're glad we did cuz this is a really interesting and awesome album. Way more complex, eclectic and unique than we expected. With a voice that's equal parts Elizabeth Fraser, Kate Bush, and Sinead O'Connor, and guitar playing that is so rad and even dizzyingly dense at times, and songs that take unexpected twists and turns. In fact, there are even a couple songs here where she seriously shreds and it's like this awesome melding of Marnie Stern and Cocteau Twins. We also really dig how there are these very '90s indie rock moments on the record that could have been from a Helium album. We're glad that we gave this record a chance, because it's turning into one of our new favorites.

You thought the cd was fucking scary... this DVD will give you nightmares -forever-. A retina burning, soul scarring visual analogue to one of the fiercest freakiest records in recent memory. Stalaggh's Nihilistik Terror was a hateful, extreme, nihilistic blackdoom industrialnoise freakout. White hot sheets of coruscating guitar, minimal percussion buried beneath layers of murk and fuzz and buzz, shrieking feedback, metallic clang, industrial grind, all whirled into a caustic cloud of disorienting brutality. A bit like Merzbow meets Abruptum, or an even more unhinged minimal and noisy Burzum. And then there's the vocals, howled anguished cries of utter terror, which were recorded by actual inmates at an insane asylum, one of which killed himself not long after the record was record. Holy shit... that's heavy. And HEAVY. Definitely one of the heaviest, most fucked up, harshest, and somehow most beautiful records in forever. So as you might imagine, this DVD manages to capture the same bleak nihilism and hateful fury, a burnt out black and white visual assault, damaged decaying film stock, a series of super high contrast images, death, famine, torture, hangings, piles of dead bodies, ruined industrial landscapes, all interspersed with seizure inducing strobe effects, bursts of grainy black and white, bits of jittery text, all to the strains of Stalaggh's harsh and hateful hiss. Even the menu, -especially- the menu, is completely goddamn terrifying on its own. We could watch the intro and the menu, a buzzing squealing visual and audio creepfest over and over and over. In fact we did. And we are as we write this! Originally a super limited DVD-r, packaged with actual drawings by inmates in an insane asylum, now reissued as a REAL dvd, without the original drawing, but with all the same killer creepy packaging. In addition to the video, there are two -even noisier- remixes, that take Stalaggh's already nearly static sound in an even harsher and buzzier direction, as well as a brand new unreleased track that has some of the creepiest most demented sounding vocals ever, all over a strangely abstract soundscape of glitching grind, downtuned buzz and industrial clang. Finally, you can listen to the whole Nihilistik Terror record with visuals, a flickering static image, the shadowy face from the album cover, transformed into an ultra creepy Neanderthal skull-like visage. Latest from AQ faves The Starving Weirdos, the first we've heard since the beginning of the year (which is practically unheard of in the current way too prolific cd-r scene), and it's not just a new batch of killer blissed out SW dronemusic, it's also a film the band "chopped and screwed" and presented at the third annual Experimental Film & Music Night in Humboldt, and this dvd contains the film and the music composed to accompany it. The film itself is Sudden Fear, from 1952 starring Joan Crawford and Jack Palance, but the band re-edited it and re-arranged it, hard to say how much was changed, we haven't ever seen the actual film, but from this version it looks pretty freaked out and fucked up. Although it could be the Starving Weirdos' extra creepy score too, a cacophonous Hermann Nitsch like drone, thick and abrasive, but haunting and ominous. The film playing out, at different speeds, the screen split, images super imposed over one another, the music, appropriately dark and terrifying. This is definitely the darkest and most menacing we've heard the Starving Weirdos, and it really suits them. Strings sing and squeal, feedback moans and groans, bits of percussion surface and are carried a way by thick swells of low end whir, it's like Bernard Hermann meets Nitsch covering Goblin. Scary as hell and so so good! Packaged in a mini dvd style plastic case, with a black and white insert cover, and pasted on liner notes on the inside. LIMITED TO 150 COPIES, each one hand numbered.

Who else here owns a crappy fuzzed out fourth generation video dub of every episode of The Ben Stiller Show? I know I'm not the only one. It's almost like watching a watercolor rendition of a comedy series. But now you can own the whole thing (a mere ten years after its demise) legit, with crisp image, on this two DVD set. With a cast of uber-comedians: Ben Stiller, Janeane Garafolo, Andy Dick and the other half of Mr. Show, a.k.a Bob Odenkirk, it's hard to believe that the Ben Stiller Show has remained unavailable all these years. Possibly its cult status was guaranteed by the cast's truly fucked up and obscure choice of parodies like the Lassie recreation which supplants the lovable dog with a haggard, non-sequitur spewing Charles Manson (played to the hilt by Odenkirk). Or Stiller's own reccurring celebrity roast skit in which he impersonates Robert Evans and tortures the likes of Casey Kasem, Herve Villechaize and others. Those already intimately familiar with the show will be glad to hear that, along with all the original episodes, there's a plethora of bonus material including: unaired sketches, an alternate version of the pilot episode, two early parodies from MTV's version of the show, a behind the scenes special and, of course, commentary (including a hidden "easter egg" of Bob and Ben doing commentary for Melrose Heights). For a while it was practically impossible to get records by our favorite one man Tasmanian rain forest black metal misanthrope Striborg. We listed one or two years ago, and constantly had a couple copies of titles in stock, but rarely were we able to get enough copies to list, or to get them at all consistently. Finally after years of trying unsuccessfully to track down all the Striborg discs for you, the faithful AQ outsider black metal elite, Displeased Records over in Holland finally began a pretty comprehensive Striborg reissue campaign recently, remastering the sound, fancying up the artwork, but most importantly, letting all you freaked out damaged black metal obsessives get your ears on some of the most amazing, most fucked up black metal music ever. And it still is as far as we're concerned. We love Furze and Necrofrost and all that, but there's something special about Striborg. All you have to do is check out some of our other reviews where we go on at length about the magical mysterious soundworld Sin-Nanna aka Striborg has crafted over the years. Thick washes of static and hiss, washed out buzz, stumbling chaotic drumming, gorgeous dreamlike atmospheres, mournful and melancholy, depressive and miserable, but at the same time, blessed out and dreamy, a haunting blackened ambience peppered with bursts of blurred buzz and abstract metallic crush. But here it is, and while secretly we were hoping for some glimpses of the man himself, lurking in caves, and creeping across moors, instead, what you get, quite appropriately we might add, are landscapes, rocks and snow, epic vistas, dark forests, cloudy skies, gorgeous skylines, lush rain forests, vines and leaves and branches, and of course lots and lots of trees. Much of it shot night vision style, like the Blair Witch Project, but a lot of it long tracking shots, like some mysterious nature documentary. Some are overlaid with video experiments flickering shapes and formless video static, pulsing and throbbing, spinning and shifting, others are washed out or filtered, others are negative, but some are just left the way they are, lovely shots of unspoilt nature. All perfectly complimenting the sounds of Striborg, whether it be creepy ambient shimmer, or blurry buzzy stumbling blasts. It's like being some sort of wraith or spirit, floating bodiless through some lost land, devoid of humanity, drifting through dark forests and moonlit landscapes and winter wastelands. But those hoping to catch a glimpse of the man himself will not be disappointed after all. There's a "Forest Gallery" which is a slide show see to music, a series of striking forest images, but also, TONS of photos of Sin-Nanna, be-robed and corpsepainted and wandering through the Tasmanian rain forests, as well as drawings of trees (many of which were included in past cd releases) and most shocking of all, several photos of Sin-Nanna sans corpsepaint, just a metal dude with long hair and a Darkthrone t-shirt. As if that weren't enough, there's also a "Treeography", which we were originally hoping would be some sort of list of Striborg's favorite trees, or at least a tour of the forest complete with the information about all the trees, but instead is a discography, and then another slide show of jittery super eight images of Sin-Nanna and the forest, underlit, creepy and flickery, so beautiful. In fact all the films here are gorgeous, were they not "black metal videos" it wouldn't be hard to imagine these as experimental short films in some obscure film festival. Definitely recommended. Essential for Striborg freeks, and weirdo black metal fanatics, but equally recommended for adventurous viewers and listeners, who might just be looking for something truly strange and creepy, blackened and beautiful.

This one probably barely needs a review for most folks. Ummm, let's see, lots of hot naked tattooed and pierced punk rock and goth and emo girls, dancing and stripping and running around naked and causing trouble. 'Nuff said. Most folks are probably familiar (maybe *very* familiar) with the Suicide Girls website, a modern pinup site featuring the above mentioned ladies and a very My Space like punk rock community. This DVD documents the first SG burlesque tour, and features lots of live footage (including a bunch shot at the Great American Music Hall here in SF), lots of new routines / stripteases set to punk rock, as well as interviews with the ladies and lots of on-tour antics, that play just like every band-on-tour video you've ever seen, but instead of a band you've got a bunch of giggling naked girls. Ahem. And you'd never watch that Death Cab tour documentary or the Beulah movie and see those guys completely nude in the middle of the night on the side of the road in San Francisco trying to hail a cab and find a cabbie who will let them writhe around on the hood naked. Which is most definitely for the best. Features music from Sparta, Her Space Holiday, Open Hand, !!! (Chik Chik Chik), Shipping News, the Mooney Suzuki, Daedelus, Probot, Jolie Holland, Youth Group and a bunch more. Oh, and did we mention the nekkid ladeez? All region!

Just got these in today, list day, four new aRCHIVE dvd titles (Ai Aso, Mick Barr, Khlyst, and Suishou No Fune). So, we haven't had a chance to watch 'em yet but since they're limited and all we figured you'd rather we just went ahead and listed 'em now rather than waiting 2 weeks. And all four artists are pretty cool after all. So, this one is from Japanese Tokyo Flashbackin' bleak psych-folk unit Suishou No Fune, featuring live footage from their 2007 East Coast USA tour, as shot and edited by James Plotkin. There's material from shows in NYC and Philly, and a segment where they jam with Bardo Pond and somebody called Harmonica Dan (like we say, we haven't seen it yet, but we'll guess he plays harmonica). So that all sounds pretty rad, if you like this band as much as we do. And Bardo Pond too! The dvd is approximately 1 hour long, and is packaged in a swank four-panel foldy card thing in a PVC bag, with art/design by Stephen O'Malley. Limited, OF COURSE, to 600 copies!!!!

The completely awesome fictional (or is it?) Sun Ra movie now available in a swank DVD edition courtesy of the fine folks at Plexifilm. If you've seen this already you know it's the best low budget science fiction afro-jazz freak film ever made, and you'll want this new version with bonus stuffs. If you haven't seen it, what are you waiting for? Sun Ra was a genius and also had a sense of humor, this film proves. Made here in the Bay Area by some public television guys and shot on the same sound stage (at the same time!) as the Mitchell Bros. famed porno opus Behind The Green Door (!) this is simply out of this world: the music (lots of live performances), the story, the visuals. Sun Ra wrote all his own lines, by the way. This dvd 'director's cut' restores the film to its original 82 minute length, and includes some truly special features, among them a video interview with the director and producer, and and some silent bonus footage of Ra and the Arkestra cavorting at the Pyramids in Egypt! For a band whose successes on their albums has been made through the emotional strain of each of their songs, this live album is remarkably tame. Its quite surprising that Sunny Day Real Estate live, choose not to take the emo approach of draining one's soul into the every song (especially on the vocals, reaching for notes unreachable), rather, the band merely performs the songs from their albums... devoid of the emotive content.

SORRY. Hard to believe Superchunk have been around for 15 years, but they've got the records, and now the comprehensive DVD to prove it. Crowding Up Your Visual Field collects all of the band's videos and there are so many good ones, "Throwing Things", "Tie A Rope To The Back Of The Bus", "Mower", "Precision Auto", "Driveway To Driveway" and tons more! But that's not all!! There's also Quest For Sleep, an hour long documentary of the band's 2001 Japanese / European / American tour. Plus a whole bunch of live footage including four songs from the band's first show ever, a video interview, a band history and of course what DVD would be complete without band and director commentary.

Our favorite Norwegian death-jazz electro-acoustic improv ensemble, the one and only Supersilent, are back with a new release -- and it's a live DVD! As such, it serves as something of a consolation for myself (Allan) and AQ pal Cayce, who showed up to see Supersilent perform here in San Francisco for their first and only time (this was a year or two ago, at the Great American Music Hall) only to discover that the band who were breaking their gear down and vacating the stage upon our arrival was in fact Supersilent, making way for Jagajazzist who we had thought were to be the opening act. D'oh!! It was an especially cruel twist of fate for Cayce, who through a set of circumstances we needn't describe here, ended up holding (and paying for) FIVE non-refundable tickets to the show. He actually didn't really mind shelling out $100 to see Supersilent (that's how much of a fan he is) but then to miss 'em in the end was, unfortunate to say the least... So, now through the magic of the DVD format, Cayce and I can experience what that show might have been like. And all Supersilent fans can experience what the show on the DVD (filmed in Oslo, August 16th 2004) was definitely very much like! We were actually a little worried that the visuals would somehow reveal too much about this band, but the DVD is shot in moody black and white 16mm which helps maintain their mystique... and it is cool to see how the actual humans involved interact with their instruments and equipment to produce the sounds of Supersilent, which have always been a blend of very live sounding playing and electronic processing, with the breathy trumpet of Arve Henriksen, snake charmer sinuous at times, suggesting the jazz of Miles Davis amidst the "improv musique concrete" (and this concert is entirely improvised) also being made by keyboardist Stale Strlokken, drummer Jarle Vespestad, and "audio virus" engineer Helge "Deathprod" Sten. The great thing about this DVD is that after a viewing or two, it still functions as a great new Supersilent album (hence the title, 7, designating it the follow-up to their last album, 6). And since now it's hard to buy a cd player that's not also a DVD player, if you've got one of those hooked up to your stereo system you can just put this disc in and listen to it sans video, as if it was a regular cd that's just a bit longer (109 minutes) than normal.

TAD!!! Fuck yeah! We've long championed grunge around here. Green River, Mother Love Bone, Afghan Whigs, Mudhoney, Rein Sanction, Nirvana, and most of the grunge obsessives here were members of the Sub Pop single of the month club, and cherish records by The Fluid, Blood Circus, Malfunkshun, Love Battery, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, Cat Butt, The U-Men, Skin Yard, Gruntruck, Swallow, Green Magnet School, Les Thugs, Pond, Sprinkler and loads more, many of whom only released one or two 7"s. Grunge quickly became a bad word, as the mainstream caught on, and suddenly it was a movement, a style of dressing, a movie with Matt Dillon, but it never took away from how powerful the music was, a sloppy, glammy punky mix of garage rock, heavy metal and punk rock, with huge heapings of POP mixed in. And no one did it better, or heavier, than Tad. Tad Doyle the man, fronted TAD the band, one of the coolest of the grunge crop. As heavy and intense as any of the other bands at the time, but with a surprising amount of musical complexity, not to mention killer hooks galore. Plus they were just such a cool and weird looking band. Outside of the Screaming Trees, you were not gonna see another HUGE long haired dude fronting a killer rock band. And they played up the whole scary mountain man, right down to the song titles ("Wood Goblins") to the promo photos, that were almost always in the woods, and Tad almost always seemed to be brandishing a chainsaw. When we discovered there was a documentary about Tad, we were so psyched. We also wondered how a whole movie about Tad would play out, since they weren't a hugely Behind The Music worthy outfit, nobody died, nobody O.D.'d, minimal bad blood between ex-band members, they never got HUGELY popular, they sort of just plugged along. But thankfully the movie is super fun, and super watchable, due in no small part to the fact that Tad is super fucking charming. As is his bandmate Kurt Danielson. They talk about all the different records, their co-headlining tour in Europe with Nirvana, the 8-Way Santa record cover lawsuit, their first major label experience, resulting in being dropped midtour, and their second, with the same result, the "Jack Pepsi" lawsuit, lots of drinking, smoking pot, drugs, interviews with Mark Arm of Mudhoney, Krist Novoselic from Nirvana, Bruce and Jonathan who ran Sub Pop, but most importantly, so much rocking. Amazing live footage of Tad in action, the band were a powerhouse, and Tad's between song banter was funny as shit, and it's amazing to see Tad leaping into terrified crowds. We even watched it with someone who wasn't all that into Tad or grunge, and they thoroughly enjoyed it as well. Maybe not as much as us. For some reason Tad elicits all sorts of fanboy adoration in even the most jaded of rockers. Might be because they always seemed like underdogs, and they always seemed like cool guys too, but most importantly they just completely RULED. One of the grunge bands that almost all heavy music lovers seem to completely dig. This dvd had us going nuts relistening to all our Tad records, and even suddenly wanting to track down the last two major label records as well. One of our favorite music dvds of the year for sure. And if that weren't enough, it also includes all the Tad videos, which like Tad, the man AND the band, completely rule.
